STARS: Six Contemporary Artists from Japan to the World
The STARS exhibition was originally planned to coincide with the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic it opened on a shifted schedule.

The show selects six artists who have transcended the Japanese frame to earn today an international reputation across regions and generations, and traces the arc of their practice by connecting early and most recent works.

Yayoi Kusama
“STARS” installation view — Yayoi Kusama
A square plate laid out with the image of While Waiting for Love, the Herd of Women Are Always Left by the Men (2009), a work shown in this exhibition and drawn from Yayoi Kusama’s most recent painting series, My Eternal Soul. It is a bone china piece of a soft, pure white and beautifully translucent finish.
A bone china mug of beautifully rounded form, laid out with the motif Ikkyu drawn by Lee Ufan expressly for this mug — a special edition carrying the sentiment of “taking a break with mug in hand.”
“STARS” installation view — Tatsuo Miyajima, Sea of Time – TOHOKU project (2020, Tokyo)
Tatsuo Miyajima is known for works using LED digital counters that step through the numbers 1 to 9; his original goods for the show are glasses scattered with digital numerals. When water is poured in, the numbers change color, revealing themselves in two hues — green and blue.
A “STARS”-original kokeshi doll produced in collaboration between Takashi Murakami and “Usaburo Kokeshi,” a workshop nestled in a village at the eastern foot of Mount Haruna. It draws inspiration from Cherry Blossoms Fujiyama JAPAN (2020) — the roughly 20-meter-wide new large-scale painting made for this exhibition.
Jigsaw puzzles featuring the new painting Miss Moonlight (2020) made for this exhibition and the image of The Little Star Dweller (2006)*. Each has 1,000 solid pieces. Piecing them together, you can enjoy both the puzzle-building itself and the calm expression of the girls Yoshitomo Nara paints emerging bit by bit.

An umbrella whose striking image is a flash cutting across a pitch-black night sky. It takes as its motif works from Hiroshi Sugimoto’s Lightning Fields series*, created by artificially generating flashes of lightning and discharging them onto photographic dry plates.

The official catalogue is richly illustrated with newly shot photography — including the new works and installation views on display — and also carries short essays on each of the six artists, along with critical texts by Mami Kataoka, Fumio Nanjo, and Alexandra Munroe.

본 전시는 일본이라는 틀을 넘어 국제적으로 폭넓게 활약하고, 오늘날 다양한 지역과 세대로부터 높은 평가를 받고 있는 아티스트 6인을 선정하여, 초기작과 최신작을 잇는 형태로 그들의 활동 궤적을 소개하는 전시이다.

Yayoi Kusama
“STARS전” Yayoi Kusama 작품 전시 풍경
Yayoi Kusama의 최신 회화 시리즈 《My Eternal Soul》 중, 본 전시 출품작 《While Waiting for Love, the Herd of Women Are Always Left by the Men》(2009년)의 도상을 레이아웃한 스퀘어 플레이트. 부드러운 순백과 투광성이 아름다운 본 차이나 제품이다.
하루나 산 동쪽 기슭 마을에 공방을 둔 “Usaburo Kokeshi”와 Takashi Murakami의 협업으로 탄생한 “STARS전” 오리지널 코케시. 본 전시를 위해 그려진, 폭 약 20미터의 신작 대형 회화 《Cherry Blossoms Fujiyama JAPAN》(2020년)에서 착상을 얻어 제작되었다.
본 전시를 위한 신작 회화 《Miss Moonlight》(2020년)와 《The Little Star Dweller》(2006년)*의 도상을 담은 직소 퍼즐. 도전할 만한 1,000피스. 한 조각씩 맞출 때마다 Yoshitomo Nara가 그린 소녀의 평온한 표정에 마음이 편안해지고, 그림이 완성되어 가는 즐거움을 만끽할 수 있다.

칠흑의 밤하늘을 가르듯 그려진 섬광이 인상적인 우산. 번개의 섬광을 인공적으로 만들어 내어 사진 건판 위에 방전시키는 기법으로 제작된 Hiroshi Sugimoto의 “Lightning Fields” 시리즈 작품*을 모티프로 삼고 있다.
*본 전시에는 출품되지 않은 작품이다.
