I visited “Basquiat: Made in Japan,” held at the Mori Arts Center Gallery.
Basquiat: Made in Japan (venue: Mori Arts Center Gallery)
We introduce the exhibition, including the works on display, in an illustrated article below. Please take a look if you like.
In this article, since the goods shop at the Basquiat exhibition was quite extensive, I would like to introduce it.
Goods sales corner
Catalogue
The standard-item exhibition catalogue has a cover with text only—a binding that is very Basquiat-like.
Its rich content includes essays on Basquiat by the exhibition’s curator Dieter Buchhart and supervisor Kikuro Miyashita (professor at Kobe University / art historian), as well as an interview with collector and former ZOZO president Yusaku Maezawa.
The catalogue is priced at 3,000 yen (excl. tax). Thick, with rich content.
Postcards
Among the goods on sale, the first thing to check is the array of postcards.
At 150 yen each (excl. tax), the postcards gave the impression of being few relative to the number of works on display.
Please also see our article on how to handle postcards.
BE@RBRICK
One of the few limited items among the venue goods was “BE@RBRICK.”
The “100% & 400%” was limited to 100 units and went on sale from the opening day, 9/21, while the “1000%” went on sale in early October.
“100% & 400%”: 10,800 yen (excl. tax); “1000%”: 48,000 yen (excl. tax)
Yoga Mat
They had a “yoga mat,” an item rarely seen among art-exhibition goods.
Quite bold, isn’t it.
Basquiat exhibition yoga mat: 13,000 yen (excl. tax)
Tote Bag
This is the tote bag, which has become a standard item.
Several kinds were on sale.
Basquiat exhibition tote bag: 5,000 yen (excl. tax)
Skateboard
True to Basquiat’s street origins, skateboard works (without wheels attached) were also on sale.
BASQUIAT×The Skateroom — from upper left: “DEMON” 100,000 yen (excl. tax); “SKULL,” “HORN PLAYERS,” “ROBOT” 65,000 yen each (excl. tax),
Handbook
An introductory handbook approaching Basquiat’s appeal, by exhibition supervisor Kikuro Miyashita, Katsuhiko Hibino, and others.
“Basquiat Handbook”: 2,000 yen (excl. tax)
T-shirts & Hoodies
The exhibition’s original T-shirts were also on sale.
Basquiat T-shirts were previously made into products at UNIQLO too.
“T-shirt” 5,000 yen (excl. tax); “Hoodie” 7,000 yen (excl. tax)
Moleskine
Collaboration items with the Italian notebook brand Moleskine were also on sale.
Moleskine×Jean-Michel Basquiat “Collectors Note Book + Roller pen” 5,600 yen (excl. tax)Moleskine×Jean-Michel Basquiat “Collectors Note Book (black/purple)” 3,500 yen (excl. tax)
BASQUIAT×Herschel
Collaboration items with Herschel, based in Vancouver, Canada, were also on sale in several varieties.
Many goods were on sale, including collaboration items with famous brands.
Recent blockbuster (large-scale) exhibitions really do have fun goods shops.
Beyond the items introduced with photos this time, there is a large lineup.
Do look for them at the venue.

BE@RBRICK
