We visited the group exhibition commemorating SCAI’s 30th anniversary.
The free booklet “SCAI Exhibitions 1989-2019,” distributed during the exhibition, is a valuable document packed with 30 years of history.
SCAI Exhibitions 1989-2019
The booklet is a documentary compilation of exhibition titles and overviews held at four venues so far, presented with their main visuals.
The four venues — TOKO Museum of Contemporary Art (Aoyama), Project Room (Omotesando), Penrose Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA) (Nishi-Azabu), and SCAI THE BATHHOUSE (Yanaka)
The very first exhibition was “Edward Ruscha (Ed Ruscha),” held at the TOKO Museum of Contemporary Art starting January 21, 1989 (Saturday).
The TOKO Museum of Contemporary Art was a museum established by TOKO Real Estate, where Masami Shiraishi apparently served as deputy director at the time.
In SCAI THE BATHHOUSE’s early days, a solo exhibition by Takashi Murakami was also held.
Solo exhibition “Which Way Tomorrow? (Fall in Love)” held in June 1994Yoshitomo Nara’s solo exhibition was held in 1995At the “SCAI 30th Anniversary Exhibition (SCAI PARK),” the main visual work was on display (private collection).
Although no works were shown at the 30th anniversary exhibition, Julian Opie’s solo exhibitions have been held four times — starting in 2000, then again in 2005, 2009, and 2014.
Solo exhibition “Julian Opie” held in November 2000
Izumi Kato’s solo exhibition was held once, in 2005.
April 2005: Izumi Kato solo exhibition “Naked People”
Records also remain of several exhibitions by artists currently handled by MAHO KUBOTA GALLERY. In addition to the aforementioned Julian Opie, these include Miwa Ogasawara, Yurie Nagashima, and Kentaro Kobuke. Maho Kubota herself is an alumna of SCAI THE BATHHOUSE.
April 2013: Miwa Ogasawara “beyond silence”
Kohei Nawa’s solo exhibition “Biomatrix,” which we also covered on this site, was a striking show.
October 2018: Kohei Nawa solo exhibition “Biomatrix”
Even today, SCAI’s stance of actively promoting international artists remains unchanged.

Though distributed free of charge, the booklet carries the weight of 30 years of history and holds considerable documentary value.
SCAI THE BATHHOUSE also maintains an online archive (record) of its exhibitions.
Exhibitions held after 1998 include photographs — for those interested, please visit the link below.

SCAI Exhibitions 1989-2019
4개 시설 – TOKO Museum of Contemporary Art(아오야마), Project Room(오모테산도), Penrose Institute of Contemporary Arts(PICA)(니시아자부), SCAI THE BATHHOUSE(야나카)
제1회는 1989년 1월 21일(토)부터 TOKO Museum of Contemporary Art에서 개최된 전시회 “Edward Ruscha(Ed Ruscha)”입니다.
Julian Opie”
Izumi Kato
2005년 4월 개최 Izumi Kato 개인전 “Naked People”
Maho Kubota 씨는 SCAI THE BATHHOUSE 출신입니다.
Miwa Ogasawara “beyond silence”
Alfredo Jaar “Lament of the Images”“SCAI Exhibitions 1989-2019” 뒷표지
SCAI THE BATHHOUSE
