The Miracle of M.C. Escher
The Miracle of M.C. Escher is drawing crowds.
Even on weekday afternoons it is packed, which reaffirms just how popular Escher is in Japan. The audience seems to span all ages and genders—a wide range. Having built his fame on trompe-l’œil, he is by now a truly major-league artist.
Official Catalog
The Miracle of M.C. Escher is crowded, and merchandise sales are brisk too, with the shop absolutely packed. The most popular item among them is the “official catalog.” It is a definitive keepsake edition containing every work on display in this exhibition.
The official catalog is priced at “2,700 yen (tax incl.)” per copy. Remarkably, it uses “Codex binding,” a binding this writer loves! A catalog that raises one’s expectations.
What’s more, it comes with a book band. You can choose your favorite from four colors. It’s a rare bit of planning, and a welcome one.

A definitive keepsake official catalog featuring all 152 works on display. It uses the luxurious “Codex binding (section-sewn binding)” that opens a full 180 degrees and stays open without being held down, and comes with a Miracle book band available in four types.

A stylish cover design
The back cover features Escher’s signature “trompe-l’œil”
The Codex binding shot from the side. It is designed so the cover wraps the binding to keep it from being exposed.
Since many of Escher’s works are prints, it is mostly monochrome.
Many of Escher’s works reward careful looking, so you can take your time enjoying them.
Explanations of the works are carefully included as well.
Long, horizontal works like picture scrolls were also properly included.
The paper quality doesn’t feel especially high, which is a little disappointing, but the sheer volume of 240 pages means it will take considerable time to both read and view. In that sense, it may well be a good-value catalog.
Escher’s works are mostly prints, and many are small in size. Rather than viewing them at a crowded exhibition, some may prefer to savor the catalog slowly and calmly. Of course, the fine lines and the impact of the actual works are nothing to scoff at, but…

평일 낮 시간대에도 붐벼서, 일본에서 에셔의 인기를 새삼 실감하게 됩니다. 관객층은 남녀노소 폭넓다는 인상입니다. 착시 그림으로 지명도를 높여, 이제는 명실상부한 메이저급 작가라 할 수 있습니다.
공식 도록
붐비는 The Miracle of M.C. Escher이지만, 굿즈 판매도 호조를 보여 매점 역시 크게 붐볐습니다. 그중에서도 가장 인기가 많은 것은 「공식 도록」입니다. 이번에 전시된 모든 출품작을 수록한 완전 보존판입니다.
공식 도록의 가격은 1권당 「2,700엔（세금 포함）」. 놀랍게도 필자가 아주 좋아하는 「Codex 제본」 장정입니다! 기대가 부푸는 도록입니다.

에셔의 작품은 판화가 많아 흑백 위주입니다.
에셔의 작품은 가만히 들여다보며 납득하게 되는 작품이 많아, 시간을 들여 즐길 수 있습니다.
작품 해설도 꼼꼼하게 수록되어 있습니다.
두루마리 그림 같은 가로로 긴 작품도 제대로 수록되어 있었습니다.
종이 질은 그다지 높은 퀄리티가 느껴지지 않아 조금 아쉽지만, 전 240페이지에 달하는 분량은 읽는 것도 보는 것도 상당한 시간을 들이게 될 것입니다. 그런 의미에서는 가성비가 좋은 도록일지도 모릅니다.
에셔의 작품은 판화가 중심이며 자그마한 작품이 많습니다. 붐비는 전람회에서 보는 것보다, 도록을 차분히 여유롭게 감상하며 즐기는 방법도 있을 것 같습니다. 물론 섬세한 선이나 실물 작품의 박력도 결코 버릴 수 없지만….
