West Bund Art & Designは、ART021よりも少し規模が大きい印象です。また、アート作品の傾向も欧米よりと言いますか、中国マーケットを意識しつつも、よりグローバルな思考の作品が多かったように感じました。両フェアともに出店しているギャラリーも複数ありましたが、West Bundの方に作品の比重を置いているような傾向も少なからず感じました。
In early November 2019, we traveled to Shanghai to visit its art fairs.
It was our first overseas art fair since Art Basel Hong Kong in March — a long-awaited opportunity that turned out to be a meaningful chance to experience the excitement of the art scene in China.
During this period, two major art fairs — “ART021” and “West Bund Art & Design” — take place simultaneously. Both attract internationally influential mega-galleries as well as many exhibitors from Europe and other parts of Asia including Japan, and both were bustling with visitors.
Beyond the fairs, we also visited galleries and museums scattered throughout Shanghai. Several mega-galleries have chosen to open branches in Shanghai rather than Japan.

About Shanghai
When thinking about traveling from Japan to Shanghai, China, the first impressions that often come to mind might be “far,” “expensive,” and “uneasy.”
What the author felt during this 3-day, 2-night stay in Shanghai, however, was “close,” “cheap,” and “safe.” Blessed with fine weather, the bright Shanghai atmosphere overturned our preconceptions in the best possible way.
*Some cynics did point out an “occult” theory that “the government was managing the air quality during the international art fair season”…
Surprisingly, some parts of the city had a stylish atmosphere.
Close
The flight itself takes only about two and a half hours. You arrive in the blink of an eye.
Hong Kong takes four to five hours, but Shanghai is reached almost instantly. With frequent flights, it is also easy to pick a time that suits your schedule.
Cheap
The author used airline miles (the route has plenty of seat availability, so booking two weeks in advance was no problem).
A collector acquaintance took a whirlwind trip using a low-cost carrier, and the price they mentioned was astonishing — a round trip for just over 20,000 yen. That is about the same as a round trip on the Shinkansen to Nagoya.
Local transportation was also incredibly cheap, which was a pleasant surprise. Accommodation costs can be kept low as well.

ART021
“ART021” is an art fair held in Shanghai, China, marking its seventh edition in 2019. It was held at the Shanghai Exhibition Center, a magnificent building. The U-shaped structure offers vast floor space, and the fair was staged on a larger scale than Art Fair Tokyo. You can read the report below.

“West Bund Art & Design”
West Bund Art & Design felt slightly larger in scale than ART021. The tendency of the artworks also felt more Western — while conscious of the Chinese market, there seemed to be many works with a more global sensibility. Several galleries exhibited at both fairs, but we sensed a slight tendency for them to place greater weight on their West Bund presentation.

At the West Bund Art Center venue, a solo exhibition by Tomokazu Matsuyama was on view.
The area around the venue is also home to many commercial galleries, making it an outstanding environment for enjoying art.

Beyond that, Shanghai is dotted with many galleries — TANK, the museum run by Prada, mega-galleries such as Perrotin and Almine Rech, and more — offering plenty of options for viewing art. Scheduling can become quite challenging during a Shanghai stay.
Domestic Chinese galleries such as BANK MABSOCIETY were also extremely interesting.

Taxis are extraordinarily cheap in Shanghai, so we recommend getting around efficiently using the smartphone app “DIDI,” which requires no Chinese-language interaction.
Shanghai’s art environment feels even more developed than Japan’s.
The simultaneous staging of two large art fairs is one example, and with the sheer number of galleries in operation, one can look forward to encountering art unavailable in Japan.
上海艺术体验
2019年11月初,我们前往上海参加了在当地举办的艺术博览会。
海外艺博会自3月的Art Basel Hong Kong以来时隔许久,而这次成为体验中国艺术热度的一段有意义的时光。
这一时期,两大艺术博览会——”ART021″与”West Bund Art & Design”同期举办。两者都云集了具有国际影响力的大型画廊,还有来自欧洲以及包括日本在内的亚洲各国的诸多参展方,现场十分热闹。
此外,除了艺博会,我们也走访了散布上海各地的画廊与美术馆。也有一些大型画廊未选择日本,而是在上海开设了分店。
해외 아트 페어는 3월의 Art Basel Hong Kong 이후 오랜만이었는데, 중국 아트 시장의 열기를 체감할 수 있는 뜻깊은 시간이 되었습니다.
이 시기에는 두 개의 대형 아트 페어인 “ART021″과 “West Bund Art & Design”이 동시에 개최됩니다. 두 페어 모두 국제적 영향력을 지닌 메가 갤러리가 함께 참가하는 것은 물론, 유럽 및 일본을 포함한 다른 아시아 국가들로부터의 출품도 많아 성황을 이루고 있었습니다.
또한 아트 페어 외에도 상하이에 점재하는 갤러리와 미술관도 방문했습니다. 일본이 아닌 상하이에 지점을 두고 있는 메가 갤러리도 있습니다.

상하이에 대하여
일본에서 중국 상하이로의 여행을 생각할 때, 우선 떠올리기 쉬운 첫인상은 “멀다”, “비싸다”, “불안하다”일지도 모릅니다.
이번에 필자가 2박 3일의 상하이 체류에서 느낀 것은 “가깝다”, “저렴하다”, “안심”이라는 인상이었습니다. 날씨의 축복도 있어, 화창한 상하이의 공기는 그동안 품고 있던 이미지를 좋은 의미로 뒤집어 주었습니다.
※국제 아트 페어 시기이기 때문에 “정부가 공기를 관리하고 있었다”는 오컬트설도 들었습니다만···.
의외로 세련된 분위기의 거리도 있었습니다.
가깝다
비행기에 탑승하는 시간도 약 2시간 반. 순식간에 도착합니다.
홍콩까지는 4~5시간이 걸리지만, 상하이까지는 정말 순식간에 도착합니다. 편수도 많은 노선이기 때문에 자신에게 맞는 시간을 고를 수 있는 것도 고마운 점입니다.
저렴하다
필자는 마일리지를 사용해 다녀왔습니다(좌석 여유가 있는 노선이라 2주 전에도 무리 없이 예약할 수 있었습니다).
컬렉터 지인은 저가항공을 이용해 초단기 여행을 다녀왔는데, 금액을 듣고 놀랐습니다. 왕복이 무려 2만 엔 남짓. 신칸센으로 나고야를 왕복하는 것과 비슷한 가격입니다.
또한 현지 이동도 매우 저렴해 놀라웠습니다. 체류비도 절약할 수 있을 것입니다.

“ART021″은 중국 상하이에서 열리는 아트 페어로, 2019년으로 7회째를 맞이합니다. 훌륭한 건축물인 Shanghai Exhibition Center에서 개최되었습니다. ‘ㄷ’자 형태의 건물은 층 면적이 넓고, Art Fair Tokyo보다 큰 규모로 전개되고 있었습니다. 리포트는 아래에서 확인하실 수 있습니다.

“West Bund Art & Design”
West Bund Art & Design은 ART021보다 조금 규모가 큰 인상입니다. 또한 아트 작품의 경향도 구미(歐美)에 가깝다고 할까요, 중국 마켓을 의식하면서도 보다 글로벌한 사고를 담은 작품이 많았던 것으로 느껴졌습니다. 두 페어에 모두 출품한 갤러리도 여럿 있었지만, West Bund 쪽에 작품의 비중을 두는 경향 또한 적잖이 감지되었습니다.

상하이는 택시가 워낙 저렴하기 때문에, 중국어 사용이 필요 없는 스마트폰 앱 “DIDI”를 이용해 효율적으로 이동하는 것을 추천드립니다.
상하이의 아트 환경은 일본보다 더욱 충실하게 느껴집니다.
두 대형 아트 페어의 동시 개최도 그러하거니와, 갤러리의 전개도 다수여서 일본에는 없는 아트와의 만남이 열릴 것입니다.
