Buying art online
The other day I bought a print worth several tens of thousands of yen from a commercial gallery.
It was by an artist I had been wanting for some time, so I was thrilled to add the work to my collection — until I realised that the exact same piece was being sold on a certain contemporary-art e-commerce site for seven to eight times the price (already sold out).
I hear all sorts of stories about that particular sales platform in various places. Even when you spot a work you want, it is worth thinking twice. If you know which gallery represents the artist, I would recommend contacting them first. Of course, if you find something you love, buy it — and there may well be bargains to be had. In the end, the decision is yours.
Shanghai art fair
Over the weekend I took a three-day, two-night trip to the Shanghai art fairs.
I only made up my mind two or three weeks beforehand, spurred on by the momentum of fellow gallerists and collectors around me.
On Friday the 8th I visited “ART021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair 2019.” The venue was the Shanghai Exhibition Center.

I was also fortunate to gain entry to “Prada Rong Zhai.”
It is a museum run by PRADA, a Western-style mansion created by renovating a former private residence. The atmosphere and the hospitality of the staff made it a wonderfully comfortable place.

At Prada Rong Zhai I was lucky enough to catch the solo exhibition “Rear Windows” by contemporary artist Li Qing. The exhibition runs until 19 January 2020.
The following Saturday I went to “West Bund Art & Design,” held on a site facing the Huangpu River that runs through central Shanghai. The scenery reminded me of Toyosu or Odaiba in Tokyo.
The fair takes place in an art-rich neighbourhood, surrounded by many galleries and museums.

ART021 and West Bund Art & Design have quite different personalities, and comparing them is part of the fun. Personally, my preference tipped towards West Bund Art & Design. Compared with the somewhat insular atmosphere of ART021, it had a global feel closer to Art Basel.
Art fairs abroad
When you attend an art fair held overseas, your attention naturally turns to things that differ from Japan.
The trend of works on display is different, of course, and the profile and behaviour of visitors change dramatically too — you can really feel the world at large. It was also different from Art Basel Hong Kong in March this year. Each fair has its own operational quirks, which are quite interesting to observe closely.
I flew to Shanghai on miles, so the airfare came to just 10,000 yen in taxes and surcharges. Two nights of lodging also cost around 10,000 yen, and meals and taxis are cheap. Above all, the flight is over in a flash. It is such an accessible distance that I can see myself popping over on a whim again. English does not get through very easily, which is a source of stress, but Shanghai has become a familiar place for me. And the air was noticeably cleaner than when I was there on business earlier this year. Last time it was so bad I actually felt unwell…

I was invited to dinner by the director of one of the exhibiting galleries.
Chatting with various collectors was stimulating, full of stories I had never heard and other fascinating topics. What struck me most was how each of them, despite busy schedules, makes lightning trips to international art fairs. My next overseas fair will probably be Art Basel Hong Kong in March…

온라인 쇼핑으로 사는 아트
얼마 전, 한 커머셜 갤러리에서 수만 엔짜리 판화 작품을 구입했습니다.
오래전부터 갖고 싶었던 작가였기에 작품을 컬렉션할 수 있어 기뻤는데, 어느 현대미술 온라인 쇼핑몰에서 완전히 똑같은 작품이 7~8배의 가격에 판매되고 있는 것을 발견했습니다(이미 매진).
이 판매 사이트에 대한 이야기는 여러 곳에서 듣고 있습니다만, 원하는 작품이 있더라도 신중하게 생각하는 편이 좋을 것 같습니다. 소속 갤러리를 알 수 있다면, 우선 문의해 보는 것이 좋겠지요. 물론 마음에 드는 작품을 만나면 사야 할 것이고, 뜻밖의 좋은 물건이 있을 수도 있습니다. 구매는 여러분의 판단에 맡기겠습니다···.
상하이 아트페어
주말에는 2박 3일 일정으로 상하이 아트페어에 다녀왔습니다.
결심한 것은 2~3주 전입니다. 주변 갤러리스트와 컬렉터 지인들의 기세에 힘입어 참가하게 되었습니다.
8일 금요일에는 「ART021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair 2019」에 갔습니다. 회장은 Shanghai Exhibition Center(상하이 전람 중심)입니다.

「DIOR LADY ART」라는 타이틀로 전시되어 있던 Kohei Nawa 씨와의 콜라보 백에 강하게 이끌렸습니다.

또한 운 좋게도 「Prada Rong Zhai」에도 들어갈 수 있었습니다.
PRADA가 운영하는 미술관으로, 옛 저택을 리노베이션한 서양식 건물입니다. 분위기가 좋고 스태프의 호스피탈리티가 편안하게 느껴지는 공간이었습니다.

Prada Rong Zhai에서는 마침 좋은 타이밍에 현대미술가 Li Qing(리 칭) 개인전 “Rear Windows”가 열리고 있었습니다. 이 전시는 2020년 1월 19일까지 진행됩니다.
이튿날 토요일에는 상하이 시내를 흐르는 황푸강을 마주한 장소에 회장을 둔 「West Bund Art & Design」에 갔습니다. 도쿄의 도요스나 오다이바를 떠올리게 하는 풍경이 펼쳐집니다.
주변에 갤러리와 미술관이 많은, 아트 색채가 짙은 지역에서 열리는 페어입니다.

ART021와 West Bund Art & Design은 색채가 사뭇 달라, 그 차이를 살펴보는 것도 재미있는 감상법이라고 생각합니다. 개인적으로는 West Bund Art & Design 쪽에 더 마음이 갔습니다. ART021의 다소 폐쇄적인 분위기에 비해, Art Basel과 같은 글로벌한 감각이 느껴졌습니다.
해외에서 열리는 아트페어
해외에서 열리는 아트페어에 가면, 일본과 다른 지점에 자연스레 눈이 가게 됩니다.
전시 작품의 경향이 다른 것은 물론이고, 관람객의 구성과 행동도 확 달라져서 세계를 실감하게 됩니다. 올해 3월의 Art Basel Hong Kong과도 달랐습니다. 또, 아트페어마다 오퍼레이션의 차이가 있어 유심히 살펴보면 꽤 흥미롭습니다.
상하이는 마일리지로 갔기에 항공권은 세금 등 부대비용으로 1만 엔, 2박 숙박비도 약 1만 엔, 식사와 택시도 저렴한 데다 무엇보다 눈 깜짝할 사이에 도착합니다. 부담 없이 갈 수 있는 거리감이라 앞으로도 훌쩍 놀러 갈 것 같습니다. 영어가 잘 통하지 않는다는 점이 스트레스이지만, 상하이는 저에게 친근한 존재가 되었습니다. 참, 올해 상반기에 업무로 갔을 때보다 공기가 깨끗해져 있었습니다. 지난번에는 속이 안 좋아질 정도로 오염되어 있었는데···.

출품 갤러리의 디렉터께 초대받아 디너에 참석했습니다.
다양한 컬렉터들과의 대화는 자극적이었고, 몰랐던 이야기와 흥미로운 이야기가 많아 매우 재미있었습니다. 특히, 모두들 바쁜 시간을 쪼개어 해외 아트페어로 번개여행을 다니고 계시다는 사실에 감탄했습니다. 제가 다음에 방문할 해외 아트페어는 3월의 Art Basel Hong Kong이 되지 않을까 싶습니다···.
