Shohei Yamamoto
Painter Shohei Yamamoto’s popular series is created using a distinctive technique involving rollers.
As the roller turns, the projected image becomes increasingly faint with each repetition.
In contrast to the digital process of copy-and-paste, by using an analog, physical method of expression, he incorporates inevitable change and chance into his work.
Images repeated by the roller are transferred onto a carefully prepared surface.
The paint traces left behind create very subtle and delicate trajectories.
Named “reiterate” — meaning to repeat — this popular series by Shohei Yamamoto has gained strong support.
Kyoto University of Art and Design Graduate School Graduation Exhibition
The first time I met and spoke with Shohei Yamamoto was at the graduate school graduation exhibition held at Kyoto University of Art and Design.
I had heard that the graduation work of Kurumi Kotani, whose pieces I collected, would also be exhibited, and I had been intrigued by Yamamoto’s work seen on Instagram, so it was a convenient opportunity for me.

KUAD ANNUAL 2019: Spaceship Earth
After the graduation exhibition, there was an opportunity for exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum at a different venue.
This was the “KUAD ANNUAL 2019: Spaceship Earth” (held February 23-26, 2019), a selective exhibition of undergraduate and graduate students curated by Kyoto Zokei’s Professor Mami Kataoka.

Production Process
Shohei Yamamoto is a young artist who just graduated from the graduate school of Kyoto University of Art and Design this spring.
His current “Reiterate” series uses self-made rollers to repeat and express images on canvas.
Leaning on the left is his self-made roller * Studio during his graduate school days at Kyoto Zokei
He makes rollers matching each work’s size, drops paint onto them, and rolls them across the canvas.
The paint transfers to the support, but since it’s a one-shot process, he says his heart races considerably during this time.
Production notes were posted alongside works in the studio.
I visited his studio in Osaka and observed his production process.
The roller images are meticulously calculated in his head, in notes, and on the PC.Large works were in production in the warehouse-like studio space.
I was allowed to film the production process of the new series on video.
Art Award Tokyo
At “Art Award Tokyo Marunouchi 2019,” held June 5-20, he was named one of 25 artists selected from approximately 11,000 submitted works.
His work won the Embassy of France in Japan Award, and as a supplementary prize, a solo exhibition in January 2020 was arranged.
HANKYU Art Fair -Neo SEED-
Immediately after Art Award Tokyo, the “HANKYU Art Fair -Neo SEED-” group exhibition was held at Hankyu Umeda Main Store from June 26 to July 1, 2019.
Among the many exhibiting artists, Yamamoto’s work was chosen for the DM (direct mail) design.
Perhaps buoyed by his momentum at Art Award Tokyo, all 11 of his works sold out on the first day. He’s on quite a roll!

Yamamoto’s Works from a Collector’s Perspective
As a collector of Yamamoto’s work, I’ve summarized my thoughts on his art.
Painterly Appeal
His works have concept and originality, standing independently and uniquely as Shohei Yamamoto’s works.
The production techniques not seen in other artists, combined with the strength of the works, suggests potential to compete internationally.
Design-Oriented Visuals
Beyond motifs like the Laocoon Group, roller works image expands to include flowers, skulls, letters, and more.
The rendered images have excellent design-oriented quality.
Complex Matière
The carefully prepared base impresses greatly. The quality reflects his high skill as a painter. I hope you can see it with your own eyes.
Custom Panels
He uses custom-made wooden panels with linen-based supports. He’s also particular about the fabric, using double-thread linen.
The thickness (40mm for F10 size) provides strength to withstand the roller pressure.
Certificate of Authenticity and Shipping
Because I purchased when he had no representing gallery, he shipped it himself. The handling and packaging were far more careful than average galleries. His treatment, including the custom certificate of authenticity, was superb. I felt the education from Kyoto Zokei was significant.
Price
He’s a young artist with high growth potential. As an artist still building his career, prices remain accessible.
He also boldly takes on new work series, showing a research-oriented character.
His serious, passionate, and straightforward personality in painting makes him an artist collectors want to support.
First Solo Exhibition
Below is his first solo exhibition, held in Tokyo.
Including the two works submitted at “Art Award Tokyo 2019” mentioned earlier, more than 20 new works were on display in Shohei Yamamoto’s first-ever large-scale solo exhibition.
The exhibition ended with the impressive achievement of all works being sold during its run.

KUAD ANNUAL 2019 宇宙飞船地球号
毕业展之后，也在Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum获得了展示机会。
即”KUAD ANNUAL 2019 宇宙飞船地球号”（2019年02月23日～26日举办），这是由京都造形Mami Kataoka教授策划的本科生和研究生选拔展。

制作工序

目前正在进行的”Reiterate（重复、反复）”系列，是使用自制滚轮在画布上反复表现图像的作品。
롤러에 의해 반복되는 이미지는 정성스럽게 밑칠된 지지체로 옮겨집니다.
남겨진 물감의 흔적은 매우 미묘하고 섬세한 궤적입니다.
반복한다는 의미의 “reiterate(반복하다)”라고 명명된 이 시리즈는 Shohei Yamamoto의 인기 시리즈로 큰 지지를 얻고 있습니다.

Shohei Yamamoto와 처음 만나 이야기를 나눈 것은 Kyoto University of Art and Design에서 열린 대학원 졸업전에서였습니다.
필자가 컬렉션한 Kurumi Kotani의 졸업 작품도 전시된다고 들었고, Instagram에서 보아 온 그의 작품도 궁금했기 때문에 저에게는 좋은 기회였습니다.

KUAD ANNUAL 2019 우주선 지구호
졸업전 이후, 장소를 바꿔 Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum에서도 전시할 기회가 있었습니다.

제작 과정
Shohei Yamamoto는 올봄 Kyoto University of Art and Design 대학원을 갓 수료한 젊은 작가입니다.
현재 진행 중인 “Reiterate(반복하다)” 시리즈는 자체 제작한 롤러를 사용해 캔버스 위에 이미지를 반복해 표현하는 작품입니다.
왼쪽에 세워져 있는 것이 자체 제작 롤러 ※Kyoto Zokei 대학원 재학 당시 아틀리에
작품 크기에 맞는 롤러를 만들어 물감을 흘려 놓은 후 캔버스 위에 굴립니다.
물감을 지지체에 옮기지만 한 번에 결정되기 때문에 상당히 심박수가 오르는 시간이라고 합니다.
아틀리에에는 작품과 나란히 제작 메모가 붙어 있었습니다.
오사카에 있는 아틀리에를 방문해 제작 현장을 관람했습니다.
롤러의 이미지는 머릿속, 메모, PC로 치밀하게 계산됩니다.창고 같은 공간의 아틀리에에서는 대작의 제작이 진행되고 있었습니다.

아트 어워드 도쿄
2019년 6월 5일-20일에 개최된 “Art Award Tokyo Marunouchi 2019″에서는 응모작품 약 11,000점 중에서 선발된 25명의 작가 중 한 명으로 이름을 올렸습니다.

작품은 주일 프랑스대사관상에 선정되었고, 부상으로 2020년 1월 개인전 개최가 결정되었습니다.
HANKYU 아트 페어 -Neo SEED-
Art Award Tokyo 직후에 개최된 것은 2019년 6월 26일부터 7월 1일까지 한큐 우메다 본점에서 열린 그룹전 기획 “HANKYU 아트 페어 -Neo SEED-“입니다.
많은 참여 아티스트 중에서 Yamamoto 작품이 DM 디자인에도 채택되었습니다.
Art Award Tokyo에서의 기세를 이어받았는지, 작품은 전 11점이 첫날에 모두 완판되는 성황을 이루었습니다. 기세가 대단하네요!

롤러의 압력에 지지 않는 강도를 얻기 위해 두께(F10호로 40mm)가 있습니다.
작품 증명서와 발송
소속 갤러리가 없던 시기에 구입했기 때문에 직접 보내주셨습니다. 평균적인 갤러리보다 훨씬 세심한 작품 취급과 포장이었습니다. 자체 제작한 작품 증명서를 포함해 훌륭한 대응이었습니다. Kyoto Zokei의 교육이 크다고 느꼈습니다.
가격
높은 성장력이 기대되는 젊은 작가입니다. 앞으로 커리어를 쌓아갈 작가이기에 가격도 낮게 설정되어 있습니다.
또한 새로운 작품 시리즈에도 과감하게 도전하는 연구 열정적인 면모도 있습니다.
성실하고 열정적인 회화에 진솔한 성격으로, 컬렉터로서 응원하고 싶은 요소를 가진 작가입니다.
첫 개인전 개최
아래는 도쿄에서 열린 첫 개인전입니다.
앞서 소개한 “Art Award Tokyo 2019″에 출품한 2점을 포함해 총 20점 이상의 신작이 나란히 걸린, Shohei Yamamoto 사상 처음의 대형 개인전입니다.
전시 기간 중 모든 작품이 완판되는 훌륭한 성과를 남기며 마무리되었습니다.
