Tatsuo Miyajima, “Keep Changing, Connect with Everything, Continue Forever”
Tatsuo Miyajima is an artist known for works using digital counters made of LEDs (light-emitting diodes).
He drew attention with his work “Sea of Time,” shown at “Aperto 88” (the young-artists section) of the 1988 Venice Biennale, and in 1999 he participated in the Venice Biennale as Japan’s representative, earning acclaim as a world-renowned artist.
A museum where you can easily see Miyajima’s work is the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, where the work “Keep Changing, Connect with Everything, Continue Forever” is installed in a large space.
The floor of this final viewing space, leading to the exit of the collection-exhibition rooms, has become a place where diverse viewing styles intersect—people photographing with smartphones, and people sitting quietly on the installed benches.
It is exhibited in the last room on the 3rd floor of the collection exhibition rooms.
After nearly 20 years, the LEDs had developed individual variations due to deterioration over time. As if responding to one of the meanings suggested by the work’s title, they were restored during the nearly three-year renewal closure of the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.
There are 1,728 LED digital counters in all, each displaying the numbers “1–9” at a different speed. *The number “0” is not displayed.

The LEDs, each counting at a different speed, feel as though they represent a single human being. It is like the journey of life that each of us leads.
Counting up 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, the numbers, instead of displaying 0, go dark and meet a brief darkness. The pace stops, and then begins to move again. The stillness and motion the numbers etch feel like life and death, and also seem to urge us to rest.
And the relationships among each of the 1,728 numbers make me imagine the social life we lead.
The space outside the work also comes to look meaningful—isn’t this a work with a mysterious power…

미야지마 다쓰오는 LED(발광 다이오드) 디지털 카운터를 사용한 작품으로 알려진 미술 작가입니다.
1988년 베네치아 비엔날레 「아페르토 88(젊은 작가 부문)」에 출품한 작품 《Sea of Time》으로 주목을 받았고, 1999년 베네치아 비엔날레에는 일본 대표로 참가하여 세계적인 아티스트로 평가받았습니다.

20년 가까이 경과한 LED는 시간의 경과에 따른 열화로 개체차가 생겨 있었던 듯합니다. 작품 제목이 나타내는 의미 중 하나에 호응하듯, 3년 가까이에 이르는 도쿄도 현대미술관의 리뉴얼 휴관 기간에 수복되었습니다.

각각 다른 속도로 카운트하는 LED는, 한 사람의 인간을 나타내고 있는 것처럼도 느껴집니다. 우리 한 사람 한 사람이 각자 보내는 인생의 발걸음과 같습니다.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9로 카운트업해 가는 숫자는 0을 표시하는 대신 암전하여, 잠시의 어둠을 맞이합니다. 발걸음이 멈추고, 다시 움직이기 시작합니다. 숫자가 새기는 정과 동은 생과 사처럼도 느껴지고, 우리에게 휴식을 재촉하는 것처럼도 느껴집니다.
그리고 1728개 있는 각 숫자의 관계성도, 우리가 보내는 사회생활처럼 떠올리게 됩니다.
작품 바깥에 있는 공간 또한 의미가 있는 것처럼 보이기 시작하는, 신비로운 힘을 지닌 작품이 아닐까요….
