The Burart Diary, updated at irregular intervals. It is a casual, journal-style article recounting the site’s editor’s everyday thoughts and passing observations.
This time it is an article that includes an announcement of a collector exhibition in which the author is involved.
Collector Exhibition
We will be holding a collector exhibition from the end of 2019 into the start of 2020.
It is a project that I had long been contemplating together with fellow collectors, and it has come to be realized with the cooperation of a gallery and participating artists.
The title, “Collectors’ Collective,” means a group of collectors. This first edition is a curated exhibition by three collectors, including the author.

The Circle of Collectors
Through art collecting, my circle of fellow collectors has widened.
Connections have come about through exchanges on social media, through gallerists introducing us at exhibition openings, and through the artists themselves in our collections. The routes have been varied, but I have been able to meet many collectors.
In Japan’s art collecting scene, where the flow of information is limited, connections between collectors offer valuable exchanges of information and allow us to speak in a common language — I feel these are people whose values are closer to my own than even family or friends.
In the course of repeated art conversations with such fellow collectors, we came to talk about wanting “to convey the joy of art collecting more widely.” And through connections with younger art students and artists, I have always felt “I want more people to know this artist’s work” and “they should be more highly regarded.” These feelings are the driving force behind holding this exhibition.
General Collectors
The three of us are general collectors, far from what would be called big collectors.
We are nowhere near the level of collections such as the “OKETA COLLECTION” exhibition held in April 2019, which featured top-class famous works. We are ordinary collectors who carefully advance our collections within a limited budget. Though we lack financial power, we frequently visit exhibitions, and above all we hold deep affection for the works we purchase.
HIRO is a collector who shares his viewing records and collected works via Instagram.
He maintains very gentlemanly relationships with galleries, and I have great respect for his ability to collect popular works and his passionate approach to art.
Yorito Maseki is a collector who disseminates art information mainly through Twitter, with a distinctive collecting philosophy and strong convictions.
While his gentle character and expressions are impressive, so too is the sharp gaze he brings to works and the principled approach he takes to art — a wonderful collector.
Collectors’ Collective
The collector exhibition “Collectors’ Collective” that we have planned is composed of two projects. *Among ourselves we call it the “Kore-Kore” exhibition.
One is a project in which we three exhibit “works we collected in 2019,” while at the same time exhibiting and selling new works by the exhibiting artists.
The other is a project in which we each invite artists whose “work we would like to collect in 2020!” to exhibit and sell new works. *Contrary to the spirit of the project’s direction, we the organizers do not hold any priority purchase rights.
The director of MEDEL GALLERY SHU, the gallery on the second floor of the Imperial Hotel Plaza that will host the exhibition, has kindly understood the plan, provided the venue, and taken on the overall operation of the exhibition.
Participating Artists
We plan to have 15 participating artists in this exhibition.
Given the size of the gallery space, we are having quite a large number of artists take part.
It may end up being an exhibition with a lot of information to take in, but this show places its emphasis less on staging an atmospheric spatial experience and more on the pleasure of collecting and on introducing artists. We have asked participating artists to bring signature works.

Since this is such a special occasion, we are also considering some collector-oriented events where possible.
One is to invite a Tokyo picture-framer to give a talk on framing. *Planned for January 11, 2020
We are also planning to create opportunities for collectors to network (a get-together event). *Details being finalized
We are also considering ways we might support younger artists as well.
Summary
Because MEDEL GALLERY SHU is affiliated with the Imperial Hotel’s commercial facility, it stays open throughout the year-end and New Year period without closure.

Note: the collectors have no involvement whatsoever with the proceeds from works sold in this exhibition, though we believe many will share the spirit of this show. This time is designated as “Collectors’ Collective 1,” with a second edition planned for July 2020.
For the second edition, the baton will be passed from us to the next set of collectors.

컬렉터전
2019년 연말부터 2020년 연초에 걸쳐 컬렉터전을 개최하게 되었다.
컬렉터 동료들과 함께 오랫동안 구상해오던 기획으로, 갤러리와 작가분들의 협력 아래 실현에 이르게 되었다.
전시 제목 “Collectors’ Collective”는 컬렉터 집단이라는 의미로, 첫 회가 되는 이번은 필자를 포함한 총 3명의 컬렉터에 의한 기획전이다.

컬렉터의 서클
아트 컬렉션을 계기로 컬렉터 동료의 서클이 넓어져 왔다.
SNS를 통한 교류에서 인연이 생기기도 하고, 전시 오프닝에서 갤러리스트가 소개해주기도 하고, 컬렉션하고 있는 작가로부터 이어지기도 하는 등, 계기는 다양했지만 많은 컬렉터분들과 만날 수 있었다.
컬렉터 간의 연결은 정보 유통이 적은 일본의 아트 컬렉션 활동에 있어, 많은 유익한 정보 교환이 이루어지며, 공통의 언어로 이야기할 수 있는, 가족이나 친구보다도 가치관이 가까운 존재라고 느끼고 있다.
이러한 컬렉터 동료들과 반복해서 아트 담론을 나누는 가운데, “아트 컬렉션의 즐거움을 더 널리 전하고 싶다”고 이야기하게 되었다. 또한 젊은 미대생이나 미술 작가와의 교류에서 항상 느끼는 것은 “이 작가의 작품을 더 널리 알리고 싶다” “더 평가받아야 한다”는 것이다. 이러한 마음이 본 전시 개최의 원동력이다.
일반 컬렉터
우리 3명은 빅 컬렉터라 불리는 분들과는 거리가 먼, 일반적인 컬렉터다.
2019년 4월에 개최된 컬렉터전 “OKETA COLLECTION展”과 같이, S급의 유명 작품을 모은 컬렉션에는 도저히 미치지 못한다. 한정된 예산 안에서 신중히 컬렉션을 이어가는, 지극히 일반적인 컬렉터다. 자금력은 부족하지만, 전시 기회에는 부지런히 다니고, 무엇보다 구입한 작품에 대한 애정은 깊다.
HIRO 씨는 Instagram에서 감상 기록과 컬렉션 작품을 발신하는 컬렉터다.
갤러리와의 관계가 매우 신사적이며, 인기 작품을 컬렉션하는 능력과 아트에 대한 뜨거운 열정에 리스펙트를 느끼는 컬렉터다.
Yorito Maseki 씨는 Twitter를 중심으로 아트 정보를 발신하는 컬렉터로, 독특한 컬렉션 방침과 강한 고집을 지닌 분이다.
차분한 캐릭터와 표정이 인상적인 반면, 작품을 감상할 때의 날카로운 시선, 아트에 대해 일관된 태도를 지닌 점이 멋진 컬렉터다.
Collectors’ Collective
이번에 기획한 컬렉터전 “Collectors’ Collective”는 두 개의 기획으로 구성된다. ※관계자들 사이에서는 “Kore-Kore 전”이라 부르고 있다.
하나는 우리 3명이 “2019년에 컬렉션한 작품”을 전시함과 동시에, 전시 작가의 신작도 함께 전시·판매하는 기획이다.
또 하나는 우리가 각자 “2020년에 컬렉션하고 싶다!”고 여기는 작가에게 요청하여, 신작을 전시 판매하는 기획이다. ※기획 취지의 흐름에는 반하지만, 우리 기획자 측에는 우선 구매권이 없다.
본 전시장이 되는 제국 프라자 호텔 2층의 갤러리 “MEDEL GALLERY SHU”의 디렉터께서도 기획에 대한 이해를 보여주시어, 장소 제공과 본 전시 운영 전반의 오퍼레이션을 추진해주실 수 있게 되었다.
미술 작가
본 전시에 협력해주시는 미술 작가는 15명을 예정하고 있다.
갤러리의 공간을 고려하면, 상당히 많은 작가분들이 참여하는 형태가 되었다.
다소 정보량이 많은 전시가 될 것 같지만, 본 전시는 공간을 연출하여 보여주는 전시라기보다, 컬렉션의 즐거움과 미술 작가의 발신에 방점을 둔 기획이다. 참여 작가분들께는 시그니처 성격의 작품을 부탁드리고 있다.

모처럼의 기회이므로, 가능한 범위에서 컬렉터를 위한 기획을 마련할 수 있을지 구상하고 있다.
하나는 도쿄의 액자점 관계자를 모셔서 액자 장착에 대한 이야기를 나누는 자리다. ※2020년 1월 11일 예정
또한 컬렉터 간에 이어지는 기회(친목회 기획)도 마련할 예정이다. ※기획 조율 중
또한 젊은 미술 작가분들을 위해서도 무언가 도움이 될 수 있는 기획을 고민하고 있다.
정리
MEDEL GALLERY SHU는 제국 호텔의 관련 상업 시설이기 때문에, 연말연시에도 휴무 없이 상시 영업한다.

또한 본 전시에서 판매되는 작품 수익에 컬렉터는 일체 관여하지 않지만, 본 전시의 취지에 공감해주시는 분들도 적지 않으리라 생각한다. 이번은 “Collectors’ Collective 1″로서, 2020년 7월에 제2회 개최를 기획하고 있다.
제2회 기획은 우리로부터 다음 컬렉터에게 이어지는 형태가 된다.
