The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in Kiyosumi-Shirakawa is reopening after renovation.
To commemorate the reopening, two exhibitions have been organized across the special exhibition galleries and the collection galleries, presenting the museum’s collection on a large scale throughout the entire venue.
On March 29, the first day of the reopening, admission is free and the museum’s opening hours are extended until 20:00.
Reopening commemorative events will also be held during the exhibition period.
As part of this renovation, aging facilities and equipment were updated, new signage was installed so that visitors can enjoy the museum in every corner, the public spaces along the Kiba Park approach were redeveloped, and the art library was renewed.
In addition, new restaurants and cafés & lounges will open, and the museum shop will reopen as well.

Weavers of Worlds: A Century of Flux in Japanese Modern / Contemporary Art
“Weavers of Worlds: A Century of Flux in Japanese Modern / Contemporary Art,” the special exhibition marking the reopening, revisits a century of Japanese art from the 1910s to the present through the lens of the museum’s collection. It reconsiders that history through artists — the “weavers” — who developed their own creations by editorially engaging with both old and new modes of expression.
From the Taisho era, when Ryusei Kishida was active, up to the present, the “weavers” of each period have grappled with the issues of their time and have made critical work concerning “the state of Japanese art.”
Rather than being grounded in an unwavering historiography, the narrative of Japanese modern and contemporary art attempted in this exhibition focuses on the activities of artists who create while unsettling the subject through the selective “editing” of various elements, and it explores the background of those practices.

Furthermore, the exhibition also introduces creations concerning Kiba, the area where the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo is located and which has changed with the times.
By surveying important groups of works dispersed throughout the history of Japanese modern and contemporary art across all three floors of the museum’s exhibition rooms, one aspect of a century of history is likely to come to light.

Three highlights of this exhibition
This is the first opportunity to use all three floors of the special exhibition galleries to introduce the museum’s rich body of experimentally minded works — from the 1910s to the present — from a perspective that connects them to today’s creative practices.
The exhibition reconsiders Japanese modern and contemporary creation from the angle of the endeavors of “weavers” who have edited a diverse range of old and new expressions and techniques, and who have entered into creative relationships with society. Through them, we may begin to see a pioneering mode of production that itself takes as its theme the very nature of creation in a Japan of hybrid cultures.
From the museum’s collection, which has run alongside the diverse states of contemporary art, the exhibition introduces not only choice works but also precious materials from before the war, such as creative print magazines and special archive holdings from the library.

MOT Collection: Welcome Back / Nice to Meet You
The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo currently houses approximately 5,400 works in its collection. Its scope centers on postwar art and spans a wide range of genres, from the modern to the contemporary period.
The “MOT Collection,” which introduces these holdings, sets up various angles for each exhibition period so that even the same work can always be viewed from a new perspective, endeavoring to communicate the diverse charms of contemporary art.
During the nearly three-year closure, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo newly acquired around 400 works. Accordingly, this fiscal year’s collection exhibition, held to commemorate the reopening, focuses on these newly acquired works.

The first installment of the collection exhibition, “Welcome Back / Nice to Meet You,” focuses on groups of works produced mainly in the 2010s and also unveils works that have been recently restored. For visitors who have seen the “MOT Collection” before as well as those seeing it for the first time, the show should offer an experience where one can encounter the individual charms of each work in the newly renovated exhibition rooms.

기요스미시라카와의 Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo가 리뉴얼 오픈합니다.
리뉴얼 오픈을 기념하여 기획전시실과 컬렉션전시실에서 두 개의 전시를 기획하여, 미술관 전관에서 미술관 컬렉션을 대규모로 소개합니다.
리뉴얼 오픈 첫날인 3월 29일은 입장 무료이며, 개관 시간이 20시까지 연장됩니다.
또한 회기 중에는 리뉴얼 오픈 기념 이벤트도 개최됩니다.
이번 개수에서는 노후화에 따른 설비 기기의 갱신을 비롯해, 미술관 구석구석을 즐길 수 있도록 새로운 사인 설치, 기바 공원 쪽 진입로를 축으로 하는 퍼블릭 스페이스의 정비, 미술 도서실의 개장 등이 이루어졌습니다.
또한 레스토랑, 카페 & 라운지에는 새 매장이 오픈하고 뮤지엄 숍이 다시 문을 엽니다.

리뉴얼 오픈 기념으로 개최되는 기획전 “Weavers of Worlds: A Century of Flux in Japanese Modern / Contemporary Art”는 1910년대부터 현재까지 백년에 걸친 일본 미술에 대해, 편집적인 시점으로 신구의 표현을 파악하며 독자적인 창작을 전개해 온 엮는 이(weaver)들인 작가들의 실천으로서, 미술관의 컬렉션을 핵심으로 재고하는 전시입니다.
Ryusei Kishida가 활약한 다이쇼 시대부터 현재에 이르기까지 각 시대의 “엮는 이들”은 그때그때의 과제와 마주하며 “일본 미술의 존재 방식”을 둘러싸고 비평적으로 제작해 왔습니다.
본 전시에서 시도하는 일본 근현대미술을 둘러싼 서사는 흔들리지 않는 사관에 근거한다기보다, 다양한 요소의 선택적 “편집”을 통해 주체를 흔들면서 제작을 이어가는 작가들의 활동에 주목하고 그 배경을 탐구하는 것입니다.

본 전시의 세 가지 볼거리
기획전시실 3개 층 전체를 사용하여 1910년대부터 현재까지 미술관의 실험 정신이 넘치는 작품들을 오늘의 창조로 이어지는 시점에서 소개하는 최초의 기회입니다.
일본 근현대의 창조를 신구의 다양한 표현과 기술을 편집하고, 사회와 창조적 관계를 맺어 온 “엮는 이들”의 시도라는 측면에서 재고합니다. 이를 통해 하이브리드한 문화를 지닌 일본에서 창조의 존재 방식 그 자체를 주제로 삼는, 선구적인 제작 방식이 보일 것입니다.
동시대 미술의 다양한 양상과 함께해 온 미술관 컬렉션 중에서 엄선된 작품뿐만 아니라, 도서실의 창작판화지와 특별문고 등 전전(戰前)부터의 귀중한 자료를 소개합니다.
