Tracing paths with a fingertip on a condensation-fogged windowpane — I had the chance to see the works of Kurumi Kotani, who uses this act, familiar to everyone, as the motif for her practice.
Still a student at Kyoto University of Art and Design, Kotani made her Tokyo debut at “shibuya style.”
All 9 of her exhibited works sold out, marking her as an artist to watch. *After the 9 works sold out, several additional pieces were brought in, which also sold out.
The worldview she depicts, drawn through expressive techniques rooted in horror and occult sensibilities, is amplified by the peculiarity of her motifs and stirs the viewer’s imagination.
“21g (grams)” F50, 2018
The title of this F50 work, “21g (grams),” is borrowed from Alejandro González Iñárritu’s film “21 Grams.”
In an actual study by a scientist who attempted to measure the weight of the soul, patients’ body weights were measured at the moment of death, and they were said to become “21g” lighter. The film, made from the interpretation that the soul weighs “21g,” had a major influence on Kurumi Kotani’s work and became the catalyst for her “Window Series.”
The title is used as a symbol of things invisible to the eye and mysterious phenomena.

Speaking with a gallery contact I know well, I heard energetic-young-artist-style anecdotes — how her participation was decided through Facebook, and how she made two round trips from Kansai to Tokyo by shinkansen to attend the gallery during the run.
Kurumi Kotani will complete her graduate studies in March 2019 and is stepping onto the path of a full-fledged artist.

《21g(그램)》 F50호 2018년
F50호 작품의 제목 《21g(그램)》은 Alejandro González Iñárritu 감독의 영화 《21 Grams》에서 인용된 것입니다.
영혼의 무게를 측정하려 했던 어느 학자가 실제로 진행한 연구에서, 임종 직전 환자의 체중을 측정한 결과 사망 시 “21g”이 가벼워졌다고 합니다. 영혼의 무게가 “21g”이라는 해석에서 만들어진 이 영화는 Kurumi Kotani의 작품에 큰 영향을 미쳤으며, “창 시리즈” 제작의 계기가 되었습니다.
눈에 보이지 않는 것, 신비로운 것의 상징으로서 이 제목이 사용되고 있습니다.

친분이 있는 갤러리 담당자와도 이야기를 나눴는데, Facebook을 통해 참여가 결정되었다거나, 개최 기간 중에 간사이에서 신칸센으로 두 번 왕복하며 갤러리를 지켰다는 등, 에너지 넘치는 젊은 작가다운 에피소드를 들을 수 있었습니다.
2019년 3월에 대학원을 수료하고 본격적인 작가의 길을 걷게 될 Kurumi Kotani.
