I visited Kazuo Shiraga’s solo exhibition “Kazuo Shiraga : a retrospective.” The venue is Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery in Hatsudai, Tokyo.

In the adjacent museum shop, a valuable video documenting Kazuo Shiraga at work was being screened; watching it before entering the galleries gave me an extremely useful frame of reference.

Kazuo Shiraga is an internationally renowned artist — often called an action painter — famous for his “foot painting” technique, in which he suspends a rope from the ceiling, spreads a canvas on the floor, and paints with his feet.
In the footage, the 70-year-old Shiraga grips the rope hanging from above, rotates his body, and glides his feet across the canvas as though smearing the paint into it.
The movements are anything but light — this is a highly aleatoric mode of expression that even the artist himself cannot fully control.
The exhibition brings together roughly 100 works loaned from museums and private collectors across Japan, shown alongside related archival material.

Shiraga’s practice is not limited to foot painting; the exhibition also includes works made with skis or squeegees.

Back to the studio footage.
The video captured how the artist worked in tandem with his wife Fujiko, herself an artist, the two proceeding almost as a single unit. Dressed in black and white respectively, they went about the process in a way that felt almost ceremonial — and in fact the film also showed the couple bowing at a household Shinto altar.
Scenes of Fujiko wiping the sweat from Kazuo Shiraga’s face during the work were also included.
The act of gripping a suspended rope while smearing paint with the feet gives a religious impression, as if channeling a power from above and releasing it toward the earth.
Kazuo Shiraga’s work is dynamic, natural, and pulses with an outpouring of raw energy.

인접한 뮤지엄숍에서는 Kazuo Shiraga의 제작 현장을 촬영한 귀중한 영상이 상영되고 있어, 입장 전에 관람하면 매우 좋은 참고가 되는 내용이었습니다.

Kazuo Shiraga는 천장에서 로프를 늘어뜨리고 캔버스를 바닥에 펼친 뒤 발로 그림을 그리는 “풋 페인팅(Foot Painting)”으로 유명한, 액션 페인터로도 불리는 세계적인 미술 작가입니다.
영상 속 70세의 Kazuo Shiraga는 천장에서 늘어뜨린 로프를 붙잡고 몸을 회전시키며, 캔버스 위에 물감을 문지르듯 발을 미끄러뜨립니다.
움직임은 결코 가볍지 않으며, 작가 본인조차 제어할 수 없는 우연성이 지극히 강한 예술 표현입니다.
본 전시는 일본 전국의 미술관과 개인 컬렉터로부터 약 100점의 작품을 모아, 관련 자료와 함께 선보이고 있습니다.

다시 제작 현장 영상 이야기로 돌아옵니다.
같은 미술 작가였던 부인 Fujiko의 협력으로 이인삼각(二人三脚)처럼 진행되어 가는 모습이 기록되어 있었습니다. 각자 검정과 흰색 의상을 입고 행위에 임하는 모습은 어딘가 의식(儀式)적으로도 느껴집니다. 실제로 신단(神棚)을 향해 참배하는 모습도 함께 소개되었습니다.
제작 도중, 부인 Fujiko가 Kazuo Shiraga의 땀을 닦아주는 장면도 담겨 있었습니다.
늘어뜨린 로프를 움켜쥔 채 발로 물감을 문지르는 행위에는, 마치 하늘로부터 내려오는 힘을 대지 쪽으로 풀어놓는 듯한 종교적인 인상이 있습니다.
Kazuo Shiraga의 작품은 다이내믹하고 자연스러우면서도, 에너지가 뿜어져 나오는 강한 힘을 지니고 있었습니다.
