Sarushima, the only natural island in Tokyo Bay. Under the jurisdiction of the city of Yokosuka, it welcomes daytime visitors for barbecues and swimming, but as a night, it is an uninhabited island closed to entry.
“Sense Island: Museum of the Island in the Dark” is an art event that intentionally exhibits works here for nighttime viewing.
Although the ferry from Yokosuka’s Mikasa Pier takes only about 15 minutes, the island at night is enveloped in a hushed, tranquil air.

The first work to catch your eye is “prism” (Hakuten) on the beach. Colorful lines of light move, crossing and separating — a “light artwork.” I felt as if it connected with the nightscape of the city of Yokosuka visible across the water.

Ascending the slope and viewing several works, you’re stopped partway by a staff member. Here, you’re asked to place your smartphone in an envelope, and each group is handed a small flashlight.
You proceed through a tunnel — one of Sarushima’s landmarks — with brick-lined interior walls. Small lanterns have been placed along the ground.

“Iwakura” (Fumihiko Sano) is a stone work located on a hilltop. It uses a paint that glows when light is applied. Tracing the stone with a flashlight makes it flare up in vivid green.

“Perspective of a Playground Structure” (Yasuhiro Suzuki). When you rotate the spinning jungle gym, video imagery is projected. In the pitch-black, you can faintly hear the voices of children — a nostalgic and mysterious work.
Beyond these, there were also works in which you enter a pitch-black space and walk until you hit a dead end; works made from trees felled by typhoons; and a project in which you press a stethoscope against the ground to listen to the sound of the earth.
Not lit up, but deliberately dimmed. This event asks you to embrace the darkness, sharpen your senses, and enjoy the works. Unable to see your feet, walking gingerly across the island, you’re reminded of just how uncertain a place the night really is. Perhaps it’s my imagination, but I felt the works set in darkness seep more slowly and deeply into the body and the heart than they would in daylight.

东京湾中唯一的自然岛”猿岛”。归横须贺市管辖，白天可进行烧烤和海水浴，但夜晚禁止入岛，是一座无人岛。
“Sense Island: Museum of the Island in the Dark”就是在此展出作品，刻意选择夜间鉴赏的艺术活动。
从横须贺的三笠桟橋乘坐渡轮仅约15分钟即可抵达，然而夜晚的岛屿被静谧的空气所笼罩。

“Perspective of a Playground Structure”（Yasuhiro Suzuki）。转动旋转攀爬架，便会投射出影像。漆黑之中隐约传来孩子们的声音，是一件让人怀念又神秘的作品。
도쿄만에 있는 유일한 자연섬 “Sarushima”. 요코스카시 관할로, 낮에는 바비큐와 해수욕을 즐길 수 있지만 야간에는 출입이 금지된 무인도입니다.
바로 이곳에서 작품을 전시하고, 굳이 야간에 감상하도록 하는 아트 이벤트가 “Sense Island: Museum of the Island in the Dark”입니다.
요코스카의 미카사 부두에서 페리로 15분 남짓이면 도착하지만, 밤의 섬은 고요한 정적에 감싸여 있습니다.

먼저 눈에 들어오는 것은 해변에 있는 “prism”(Hakuten). 형형색색의 빛의 선들이 움직이며 교차하고 흩어지는 “빛의 아트”입니다. 바다 너머로 보이는 요코스카 시가지의 야경과 이어지는 듯한 감각이 있었습니다.

언덕을 올라 몇 작품을 감상하다 보면, 도중에 스태프에 의해 발이 멈춰집니다. 여기서 스마트폰을 봉투에 넣도록 안내받고, 그룹마다 작은 손전등을 건네받습니다.
Sarushima의 명소이기도 한, 내벽이 벽돌로 쌓인 터널을 지나갑니다. 이곳에는 지면에 작은 등불이 놓여 있습니다.

“Iwakura(磐座)”(Fumihiko Sano)는 언덕 위에 놓인 돌 작품입니다. 빛을 비추면 발광하는 도료가 사용되어, 손전등으로 돌을 훑으면 “확” 하고 녹색으로 빛을 발합니다.

“Perspective of a Playground Structure”(Yasuhiro Suzuki). 회전형 정글짐을 돌리면 영상이 투영됩니다. 캄캄한 어둠 속에서 아이들의 목소리가 희미하게 들려오는, 그리우면서도 신비로운 작품입니다.
이 외에도 캄캄한 공간에 들어가 막다른 길까지 걸어가는 작품, 태풍에 부러진 나무를 사용한 작품, 지면에 청진기를 대고 지구의 소리를 듣는 프로젝트 등이 있었습니다.
라이트 업이 아니라, 오히려 라이트 다운. 어둠을 실감하면서 감각을 곤두세워 작품을 즐기는 이벤트입니다. 발밑이 보이지 않아 조심조심 섬을 걷다 보면, 밤이란 본래 이렇게나 마음을 불안하게 하는 것임을 절실히 깨닫게 됩니다. 어둠 속의 작품은 낮보다도 더 은은하게 몸과 마음에 스며드는 것 같았다고 느낀 것은, 저만의 착각일까요.
