I visited the first solo exhibition in Asia by young American artist Jonathan Chapline, based in New York. The venue is NANZUKA.

Chapline simulates every physical element required for his paintings — the shapes of objects, the viewpoints from which they are seen, the surface qualities and textures, light sources, shading, and more — in advance on a computer screen, using 3D software.

Simple yet full of depth, unified even with a wide palette, and retaining an analog feel despite being composed digitally — it was a genuinely intriguing viewing experience. All works sold on opening day; it was a solo show with real momentum.

Chapline은 물체의 형상, 물체를 포착하는 시점, 물체 표면의 질감/텍스처, 광원, 셰이딩 등 자신의 회화 제작에 필요한 모든 물리적 요소를 미리 3D 프로그램을 활용해 컴퓨터 화면 위에서 시뮬레이션하며 작품을 만들어 갑니다.

단순하면서도 깊이가 느껴지고, 색채가 풍부하면서도 조화로우며, 디지털로 구성되어 있음에도 아날로그적인 정취가 남아 있는 신기한 감상 경험이었습니다. 작품은 첫날에 완판. 기세가 느껴지는 개인전이었습니다.
