We visited Yukiko Hata’s solo exhibition “Summer Ghosts.” The venue was Seizan Gallery in Higashi-Ginza.

Ever since seeing Yukiko Hata’s work at the Yamagata Biennale, she has been an artist on our radar, and we had been looking forward to this solo exhibition — her first in Tokyo in five years.

Her works are characterized by their vivid, eye-catching colors. Having been selected for the “Holbein” art materials manufacturer’s scholarship, she was reportedly provided with a large amount of expensive paints. The color intensity is noticeably better than her previous paints, and to our eyes it seems to lend a new luminosity to the works.

The captions included background information related to the making of each work.
Some works also contained social messages, and in contrast with the brilliance of the palette, they allowed us to sense Yukiko Hata’s “society as seen through her own eyes.”

Yukiko Hata의 작품은 Yamagata Biennale에서 본 이후로 계속 관심을 두고 있던 작가로, 도쿄에서는 5년 만이라는 이번 개인전을 기다려왔다.
전시 전경
비비드한 색채가 눈에 선명하게 다가오는 작품이 특징적인데, 화재 메이커 “Holbein”의 장학 프로그램에 선정되어 고가의 물감을 대량으로 제공받았다고 한다. 이전에 쓰던 물감보다 발색이 좋아, 작품에 광채를 더해주는 것처럼 보였다.

작품에는 사회적 메시지를 담은 것도 있어, 색채의 화려함과는 대조적으로 Yukiko Hata의 “내 눈으로 본 사회”를 느낄 수 있었다.
