Fukumi Nakazawa (Kyoto University of Art and Design)
In February 2019 I visited many graduation exhibitions, including those of the Tokyo University of the Arts, the Five Art Universities’ Show, and Kyoto University of Art and Design.
It was an opportunity to encounter a great deal of talent — the technical skill, the creative ideas, the messages embedded in the works — and to see the stance today’s students take toward their own art.
Among all of these, one of the most memorable was a body of work by Fukumi Nakazawa, a graduating student of Kyoto University of Art and Design, including her piece A Town — Town A.
KUAD ANNUAL 2019 Spaceship Earth — Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum
I had seen her work at the Kyoto University of Art and Design graduation show as well, but the “Spaceship Earth” installation at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum was even better, so I will introduce this venue here.
Fukumi Nakazawa’s three works on view: A Town — Town A, A Town — Town B, and Just a Mosquito Flying
The special exhibition “KUAD ANNUAL 2019 Spaceship Earth” is a curated show of graduation works from Kyoto University of Art and Design, organized by Mami Kataoka, a professor at the university. Fukumi Nakazawa was chosen from 32 artists in 24 groups on display.

Nakazawa produces animations from a large number of drawings on washi paper.
Once the animation is complete, all of the washi drawings that were used are glued together into a single mass, and this three-dimensional object becomes the final packaged form of the work.
The flat washi drawings begin to move, and by acquiring time, thickness, and weight, they express a solid presence as living creatures.

The characters in the animated works have extraordinarily strange forms and motions, moving about as creatures that exceed one’s expectations. The unpredictability of these characters is one of the great charms of Nakazawa’s work.

She depicts people who have transformed their own bodies to become instruments serving various purposes.
The ideas behind these motifs — the characters and so on — are fascinating and draw you in.
A Town — Town A, three-dimensional work
The largest piece, the three-dimensional form of A Town — Town A, is said to weigh more than 70kg.
The video work and the sculpture together form a single work. The video will not be issued as an edition, apparently.

Looking through Nakazawa’s drawing book, one sees vibrant line drawings taking on various forms — it was fascinating to view.
She appears very confident in her line work, and every drawing is alive with dancing lines.

After graduation, Nakazawa is planning to move abroad and further pursue the possibilities of her practice as an artist.
It will be exciting to see what kind of work she will produce next.

기획전 “KUAD ANNUAL 2019 우주선 지구호”는 Kyoto University of Art and Design 교수인 Mami Kataoka씨가 동 대학의 졸업 작품을 큐레이션한 기획전입니다. Fukumi Nakazawa씨는 전시된 24개 팀 32명의 작가 중 한 명으로 선정되었습니다.

Nakazawa씨는 와시(和紙)에 그린 대량의 드로잉을 애니메이션 작품으로 영상화합니다.
영상화가 완성되면, 사용한 와시 드로잉 전체를 풀로 붙여 하나의 덩어리로 만들어, 이를 입체 작품으로 최종 패키징합니다.
와시의 평면 작품이 움직이며, 시간과 두께, 무게를 동반함으로써 생명체로서의 확실한 존재감을 표현합니다.
매달린 와시에 뒤에서 영상을 투사
애니메이션화된 작품 속 캐릭터는 매우 불가사의한 형태와 움직임으로, 예상을 뛰어넘는 생물로 돌아다닙니다. 의외성을 담은 등장 모델의 아이디어도 Nakazawa 작품의 매력 중 하나입니다.
와시의 질감이 작품과 잘 어울려 아름다운 영상이었습니다
자신의 신체를 변형시켜, 다양한 용도의 도구 같은 것으로 변모한 사람들을 그리고 있습니다.
모티프가 되는 캐릭터 등의 발상이 흥미로워 절로 빠져들게 됩니다.
《A Town — Town A》 입체 작품
가장 큰 작품 《A Town — Town A》의 입체 작품은 70kg를 넘는 무게라고 합니다.
영상 작품과 입체 작품이 하나가 되어 한 작품으로 존재합니다. 영상 작품의 에디션은 만들지 않는다고 합니다.

Nakazawa씨의 드로잉북을 살펴보면, 생기 넘치는 선묘 드로잉이 다양한 형태를 만들어내고 있어 매우 흥미롭게 볼 수 있었습니다.
선묘에는 상당한 자신감을 지닌 듯, 어느 그림에서도 생기 넘치는 선이 춤추고 있었습니다.

졸업 후에는 해외로 건너가, 작가로서의 활동 가능성을 더욱 추구해 나갈 예정이라고 합니다.
앞으로 어떤 작품이 등장할지, 매우 기대되는 작가입니다.
