“Munch: A Retrospective — The Resonating Cry of the Soul”
On October 27, 2018 (Sat), “Munch: A Retrospective — The Resonating Cry of the Soul” opens at Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum.

A Grand Retrospective of Around 100 Works
Edvard Munch (1863–1944), master of modern Western painting, is known worldwide for his masterpiece The Scream.
Drawing chiefly on the Munch Museum in Oslo — the artist’s hometown and holder of the largest collection in the world — this grand retrospective is composed of some 100 works, centered on around 60 oil paintings and augmented with prints and other pieces.
Among the several extant versions of The Scream, the tempera-and-oil painting held by the Munch Museum, Oslo, makes its long-awaited first-ever visit to Japan on this occasion.
From representative works in which love, despair, jealousy, loneliness, and other facets of the human interior are expressed with searing intensity, to beautiful landscapes of the Norwegian countryside, to the brightly colored works of his late period — the show traces Munch’s painting career spanning some 60 years.

At this exhibition, you can savor to the full not only the iconic Scream but also the singular world Munch paints. Below, I introduce a number of the works on view via images.
First, Self-Portrait in Hell. The overwhelming sense of world in this work stays with you.

The next work, Despair, depicts a figure with head bowed as if downcast, though the expression is hard to read. Take note also of the two figures behind, the treatment of the background, and the use of color.

Alongside such heavy works, there are also radiant, luminous pieces — an enigmatic painter indeed.
The work titled The Sun feels almost blinding to look at.

Seeing the masterpiece The Scream with one’s own eyes goes without saying — but so too do the beautiful landscapes of the Norwegian countryside, the print works, and the many other pieces Munch left behind, all of which promise a rich immersion in his world.

2018年10月27日（周六）起，”Munch展 — 共鸣的灵魂之呐喊”将在Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum举办。

Edvard Munch（1863—1944），描绘了闻名世界的名画之一《呐喊》，是西方近代绘画的巨匠。
本展以画家故乡挪威首都的Oslo市立Munch美术馆所引以为傲的世界最大规模馆藏为核心，由约60件油画及版画等共约100件作品构成的大型回顾展。
在多个版本的《呐喊》之中，Oslo市立Munch美术馆所藏的蛋彩·油彩作品《呐喊》此次为翘首以盼的首次赴日。
从将爱、绝望、嫉妒、孤独等人的内心以极强烈方式表现出来的诸多代表作，到描绘挪威自然的美丽风景画、以明亮色彩点缀的晚年作品，回顾Munch长达约60年的画业。

약 100점으로 구성된 대회고전
전 세계에 이름난 명화 《절규》를 그린 서양 근대 회화의 거장, Edvard Munch(1863—1944).
화가의 고향이자 노르웨이의 수도 오슬로에 위치한 Oslo Munch Museum이 자랑하는 세계 최대의 컬렉션을 중심으로, 약 60점의 유화에 판화 등을 더한 약 100점으로 구성된 대회고전입니다.
여러 점 그려진 《절규》 가운데, Oslo Munch Museum이 소장한 템페라·유채화 《절규》가 이번에 오랜 기다림 끝에 첫 일본 상륙을 하게 됩니다.
사랑과 절망, 질투, 고독 등 인간 내면을 강렬하게 표현한 대표작들에서부터, 노르웨이의 자연을 그린 아름다운 풍경화, 밝은 색채로 물든 만년의 작품에 이르기까지, 약 60년에 걸친 Munch의 화업을 돌아봅니다.

우선 《지옥의 자화상》. 작품 속에 그려진 엄청난 세계관이 인상에 남습니다.

다음 작품 《절망》은 침울해 보이는 듯 고개를 숙인 인물이 그려져 있지만, 표정을 읽어 내기는 어렵습니다. 뒤편의 두 사람과 배경의 표현 방식, 색채 사용에도 주목해 주시길 바랍니다.

무거운 작품이 있는 한편, 빛나듯 밝은 작품도 있어, 참으로 수수께끼 같은 화가입니다.
《태양》이라는 작품은 보고 있노라면 눈부심이 느껴질 정도입니다.
명작 《절규》를 이 눈으로 보는 것은 물론, 노르웨이의 자연을 그린 아름다운 풍경화나 판화 작품, 그 밖의 다양한 작품을 남긴 Munch의 세계관을 충분히 즐길 수 있는 전시가 될 듯합니다.
