I visited Yukimasa Ida’s solo exhibition “Sisou | Ontology,” his first solo show in Japan in approximately two years.
The venue is RICOH ART GALLERY in Ginza.

His previous solo exhibition was a large-scale show held at Kaikai Kiki Gallery in February 2020.
This exhibition presents works produced using three printing techniques – Stare Reap, lithograph, and silkscreen – and is his first exhibition consisting solely of print works.

Stare Reap
“Stare Reap,” a proprietary technology developed by RICOH, is distinguished by its three-dimensionally raised painterly surface, and has already been presented as a work in the special edition of Ida’s art book “Crystallization.”

Ida’s works have come to trade at high prices even at overseas auctions.
Most recently, at Sotheby’s on 10 October 2021, a 30×25 cm work far exceeded its estimate and hammered at 567,000 HKD (approximately 8.3 million yen).

Although the works in this exhibition are prints, they are being sold at prices ranging from 300,000 to 600,000 yen.
Since a regular painting could have been purchased for this amount just a few years ago, as a longtime fan I am moved by complicated feelings.
While it is heartening to see him shift his focus to global activity and grow increasingly well known, I feel sadness at the rising prices that accompany his popularity. I left the venue with the mixed feeling that I may never again be able to acquire one of his paintings.

지난 개인전은 2020년 2월 Kaikai Kiki Gallery에서 열린 대규모 개인전이었습니다.
이번 전시는 Stare Reap, 리소그래프, 실크스크린이라는 세 가지 판화 기법으로 제작한 작품을 선보이는, 판화 작품만으로 구성된 첫 전시입니다.

RICOH의 독자 기술인 “Stare Reap”은 입체적으로 융기된 화면의 마티에르가 특징으로, Yukimasa Ida의 작품집 “Crystallization” 특별판에서도 이미 작품으로 발표된 바 있습니다.

Yukimasa Ida의 작품은 이제 해외 경매에서도 높은 가격에 거래되고 있습니다.
가장 최근인 2021년 10월 10일 Sotheby’s에서는 30cm×25cm 크기의 작품이 예상 낙찰가를 크게 뛰어넘어 567,000 HKD(일본 엔화로 약 830만 엔)라는 높은 가격에 거래되었습니다.

이번 전시의 작품 또한 판화이면서도 30만 엔~60만 엔이라는 고가에 판매되고 있습니다.
몇 년 전만 해도 일반 회화 작품을 구입할 수 있었던 금액이기에, 오래된 팬으로서는 복잡한 심경에 사로잡힙니다.
글로벌한 활동으로 무게 중심을 옮기며 점점 저명해져 가는 기쁨이 있는 반면, 인기와 함께 상승하는 작품 가격에는 슬픔을 느낍니다. 회화 작품은 이제 다시는 손에 넣을 수 없을지도 모른다···라는 복잡한 감정을 안은 채 전시장을 뒤로했습니다.
