Shoma Kimura’s solo exhibition “Full Lightness” has opened.
The venue is THE TRIANGLE, an exhibition space at Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art (Basement 1F, main building).

Shoma Kimura, winner of the Grand Prize at the 4th CAF Award (2017), is a young artist attracting attention with his remarkable activity.
He is known for creating works that combine traditional painting — with brush, paints, and canvas — with 3DCG (3D computer graphics) and VR (virtual reality) pieces that incorporate the rules of painting.
The title of this exhibition, “Virtually Unswimming,” is a metaphor comparing digital technology to the difficulty of moving underwater.

The exhibition provides a VR headset that allows visitors to view 3DCG footage in which the exhibition space is rendered in VR.
A staff member fits the headset for you. To manage queues, viewing time was limited to just two minutes
Through the headset, viewers see objects resembling the motifs in the paintings floating in three dimensions. Looking at the paintings again after watching the video produces impressions markedly different from those experienced before viewing it.

The first floor of THE TRIANGLE serves as the northwest entrance and is a free space enclosed in glass. Paint applied to the glass surfaces was catching the sunlight and shining beautifully.

Building a relationship between the digital and painting and offering viewers fresh insight, Shoma Kimura’s practice is one to keep watching closely.

Shoma Kimura는 제4회 CAF상(2017년)에서 최우수상을 수상하는 등, 눈부신 활약으로 주목받고 있는 젊은 작가입니다.
붓과 물감, 캔버스를 사용한 전통적인 회화와 함께, 그 회화적 규칙을 도입한 3DCG(3차원 컴퓨터 그래픽스)와 VR(버추얼 리얼리티)을 이용한 작품을 제작하는 것으로 알려진 아티스트입니다.
이번 전시의 제목 「수중 스펙」은 디지털 기술을 수중에서의 움직임의 어려움에 비유하여 형용한 것입니다.

이번 전시에는 VR 헤드셋이 준비되어 있어, 전시 공간을 VR로 표현한 3DCG 영상을 감상할 수 있습니다.
헤드셋은 스태프가 착용을 도와줍니다. 영상은 대기 행렬 관리를 위해 2분간만 감상할 수 있도록 제한되어 있었습니다
헤드셋을 통해 보이는 영상 속에는, 회화의 모티프와 비슷한 오브젝트들이 입체적으로 떠다니고 있었습니다. 영상 감상 후에 회화를 다시 보면, 감상 전과는 다른 인상이 생겨납니다.

THE TRIANGLE의 1층은 북서쪽 입구로 이루어져 있으며, 유리로 둘러싸인 프리 스페이스입니다. 유리 표면에 칠해진 물감이 햇빛을 받아 반짝이고 있었습니다.
