This time, as a first-time attendee at Art Basel Hong Kong, I have summarized what I learned to prepare for next time.

Art Basel Hong Kong 2019
This article is written by a first-time attendee at Art Basel Hong Kong 2019, covering things to bring, dress code, and tips to keep in mind when travelling to and entering the fair.
Since I wrote from many different angles, the result turned out to be quite comprehensive.
It also reflects my personal opinions, so please read it as a general reference.

[1] Tickets
First, the most important point I want to raise is the entry ticket.
There are two ways to obtain entry tickets: advance online booking and same-day tickets. However, same-day tickets are hard to obtain — you may be kept waiting for hours, or find that they are SOLD OUT and unavailable.
Also, even with an advance booking, when redeeming the ticket on the day of the fair you may be forced to queue for hours — reportedly some people waited three hours and still could not redeem.
I was able to enter with an acquaintance who had a VIP ticket, so I escaped the worst-case scenario. *A VIP entry pass allows one accompanying person to enter free of charge.
On the other hand, there was also information that some people saw individuals reselling used entry passes near the entrance gate.
This exploits a loophole in the entry system, which uses anonymous barcode checks.
To avoid this situation, I believe the following options are essentially the only choices.
Book online in advance and redeem your ticket before the fair opens. *Confirm redemption methods on the ticket site.
Obtain a VIP entry pass. *The standard route is to receive one from an exhibiting gallery.
Attend as an accompanying guest of a VIP pass holder.
Traveling all the way from Japan only to be unable to enter would be the worst outcome, and must be avoided.
As the most important tip, I have described it at the very beginning.
A VIP Guest ticket issued upon presentation of a VIP entry pass. Entry is done by scanning the QR code on the back.
With a VIP entry pass in hand, I was able to walk right through the reception gate. The same applies to accompanying guests.
[2] Things to Bring
Here I want to record, partly as a personal memo, the essentials you shouldn’t forget to bring to Art Basel Hong Kong.

Hong Kong dollars in cash: Exchange money right after arriving at Hong Kong Airport (better exchange rates than in Japan). Cashless payment has not spread as widely, so cash is necessary. There were no currency exchange counters near the fair venue (as confirmed on-site in 2019).

Smartphone: For all kinds of information searches, on-site communication (calls, email, LINE, etc.), maps to destinations, taking photos with the camera, and more.
Offline Google Maps: Usable on your smartphone without consuming mobile data. Highly recommended!
Internet connection: An overseas-compatible SIM card or mobile Wi-Fi to keep your smartphone connected is also a must-have. There was free Wi-Fi inside the Art Basel Hong Kong venue, but I got the impression that there were very few reliable free Wi-Fi spots at stations or in the city.
Mobile battery pack: This may just be because I use my phone heavily, but with all-day use the battery drained remarkably quickly. Bringing one is one of those items you’ll want simply for peace of mind.
Travel plug adapter: Hong Kong’s power outlets differ from the Japanese ones. Bring a plug adapter.
I used a MUJI “Travel Plug Adapter” together with an “International USB Power Outlet.”
Digital camera: Art Basel Hong Kong allows photography of all works. A smartphone camera is fine, but I also brought a digital camera. The pocket-sized compact “GR3” is highly recommended. Since I ended up taking a huge number of shots, I preferred to use a PC — not my phone — for sorting and reviewing them.
[3] Clothing and Shoes
At Art Basel Hong Kong, you’ll want to dress the part as a collector to communicate smoothly with gallerists.
The gallerists on the floor are sizing up “collectors with real intent to buy.”
Visitors’ outfits are all over the map. Celebrities mingle with guys in shorts and T-shirts — the venue is chaos.
Setting aside those who wish to avoid interaction, depending on how you communicate with gallerists, useful information for your collection may become available. If you wear a jacket and dress smartly, gallerists are more likely to approach you. Visitors dressed elegantly were repeatedly courted by gallerists in scenes I witnessed several times.
If you enter the venue looking properly put-together, gallerists’ responses will clearly shift. I was dressed in ordinary clothes without a jacket, but I had a world-famous Leica camera hanging around my neck — and several gallerists said “Nice camera!” to me and closed the distance. Also, by engaging gallerists sincerely, I received various benefits: being shown works by an artist I admired that weren’t on display, or being given a copy of a not-for-sale artist book. Had I dressed a bit more sharply, the responses might have been even better. I’m noting this as a point to consider for the future.

Related to clothing, please also pay attention to your shoes. At Art Basel Hong Kong, you’ll walk a lot. Your shoes need to be easy to walk in.
My shoes were the Swiss-made sneakers “On”.
These are running shoes favored by a well-known female gallerist who also exhibits at Art Basel Hong Kong. The chic design is versatile enough to pair with a jacket. They are lightweight and cause less fatigue — please try them if you’re interested.
[4] Flights and Accommodation
Ideally, secure your hotel on-site as early as possible.
By using booking sites such as Booking.com and reserving rooms with free cancellation in advance, you can lock in favorable prices and conditions.
At Hong Kong Airport — I used the budget carrier “HK Express.”
Flights should also be booked early, depending on your purpose.
I was able to book a round-trip on a budget airline for around 40,000 yen (booked on January 25).
There are many flights to Hong Kong with plenty of options, but many travelers are also heading there for Art Basel. Early booking is recommended.
[5] Nearby Events
During Art Basel Hong Kong, the entire city of Hong Kong is steeped in art.
Nearby facilities and galleries put on various programs timed to coincide with the fair, and were drawing crowds.
At a commercial complex called “pacific-place,” a live-painting event was held to commemorate a solo exhibition by Miwa Komatsu, and it was drawing crowds.
This event was organized by Whitestone Gallery, apparently in conjunction with Miwa Komatsu’s solo exhibition held locally.
Held at the same time was a solo exhibition by KAWS.
I knew it was being held at a venue called PMQ and that admission was free, but I didn’t know that advance booking on the website was required.
There was a paid VIP slot, but the timing didn’t line up as I was heading back home…The H Queen’s building, which houses prominent galleries such as PACE, Hauser&Wirth, and David Zwirner
Also, touring the existing galleries in Hong Kong is one of the pleasures. H Queen’s houses many well-known galleries, so it’s a place where you can experience many exhibitions in one go. *Many galleries are closed on Sundays.
[6] Non-Art Recommended Spots
Art Basel Hong Kong is simply exhausting.
There’s the fatigue of traveling from Japan, of course, but the walking distances — from accessing the venue to the amount of walking inside the fair — will also be a significant burden.
If you follow up Basel with Art Central, more galleries, and other stops, your legs will get more tired than you might imagine. A trip to Hong Kong is likely to demand your body over several days. You’ll want to recover as much as possible. What I recommend for that is massage. In Hong Kong there is an area lined with Thai-style massage shops, where you can get a massage for a very reasonable price.
The Thai massage shop I dove into on a whim. I walked in on this atmosphere without even checking reviews.
The recommended massage shops that came up in Japanese-language searches didn’t respond when I rang the intercom. Giving up, I wandered around the area looking for another. The location was around Wan Chai.
There I noticed a passing sign, was drawn in by the low prices, and stepped inside. The shop is called “Foot Kingdom Health” (足君健康).
Most massage shops operate on the 2nd or 3rd floor of miscellaneous buildings.
Opening the shop door, the lighting was quite dim and the atmosphere a bit dubious.
There was one other customer, the receptionist was an older lady, and the massage therapists were all young women (about five of them were lined up in chairs in front of me). I hesitated slightly, but I was thoroughly worn out. Since the price was low, I asked for the full-body course, 60 minutes for 180 HKD (about 2,600 yen in Japanese currency).
I put on the shorts they provided and lay down on the bed. It was a private-room-style bed sectioned off by curtains.
I would have preferred a male therapist, but contrary to expectations the young woman’s massage skills were quite something. To cut to the conclusion, it was really good! She worked tirelessly, checked in with “OK?” partway through, and the whole atmosphere was gentle and welcoming.
My whole body felt lighter, the swelling in my legs eased, and the shoes I had been wearing felt loose compared to when I entered the shop.
*Reportedly, fellow collectors who went in late at night were offered some other kind of service — or perhaps not…
Whether it was thanks to the massage or not, I felt actively recovered for the next day’s activities. Hong Kong’s Thai massage is inexpensive yet high-quality — highly recommended!
Summary
Above, I’ve summarized the things I felt should be kept in mind at Art Basel Hong Kong.
This was my first time attending, so I may not yet be seeing the whole picture.
There are surely many points beyond what I’ve mentioned that I haven’t noticed, but I’d like to keep visiting and continue exploring the pleasures of Hong Kong more deeply next time and beyond.

Art Basel Hong Kong 2019
本文由首次参加 Art Basel Hong Kong 2019 的笔者撰写,内容涵盖出行、入场时应留意的”随身物品””服装””注意事项”。
从各种角度撰写下来,篇幅颇为丰富。

关于 Art Basel Hong Kong 的展评,笔者整理如下。
【1】门票
首先,最想提醒各位的第一要点是入场门票。
入场门票分为在线预售和现场购票两种途径,但现场购票门槛很高,可能被要求长时间等待,甚至会遭遇 SOLD OUT 而买不到的情况。
另外,即便持有预订票,当天前往兑换时也需排长队,据称有人排了 3 小时仍未换到票的情况。
参加 Basel 香港真的非常辛苦。
除了从日本远道而来的旅途疲惫,前往会场的路途以及会场内的步行距离都会成为不小的负担。
若在 Basel 之后接着走访 Art Central 及其他画廊,双腿的疲劳往往远超想象。到香港后,连日之间体力消耗颇大,应尽可能恢复精力。为此我推荐按摩。香港有汇聚泰式按摩店的街区,能以相当低廉的价格享受按摩。

Art Basel Hong Kong 2019
본 기사는 Art Basel Hong Kong 2019에 처음 참가한 필자가 전하는 이동 및 입장 시 주의할 “짐” “복장” “주의사항”입니다.
여러 각도로 쓰다 보니 내용이 상당히 풍부해졌습니다.
필자의 주관도 담겨 있으므로 참고 정도로 읽어 주시면 감사하겠습니다.
Basel 홍콩에 대한 리뷰 기사는 아래에 정리했습니다.
【1】티켓
가장 먼저 말씀드리고 싶은 가장 중요한 포인트는 입장 티켓입니다.
입장 티켓은 온라인 사전 예약과 당일 판매 두 가지가 있지만, 당일권 구매의 문턱은 높아 장시간 대기, 혹은 SOLD OUT으로 구매할 수 없는 상황도 일어났습니다.
또한 사전 예약을 해두었더라도 당일 교환 시에는 긴 줄에 세워지고, 3시간을 기다려도 교환하지 못하는 상황도 있었다고 합니다.
온라인 사전 예약으로 개최일까지 티켓 교환을 마친다. ※교환 방법은 티켓 사이트에서 반드시 확인.
VIP 입장권을 입수한다. ※출품 갤러리로부터 양도받는 것이 일반적인 입수 루트입니다.
VIP 입장권 소지자와 함께 동반 입장한다.
일부러 일본에서 왔는데도 입장하지 못하는 최악의 사태는 반드시 피해야겠지요.
가장 중요한 주의사항으로 서두에 기술했습니다.
VIP 입장권을 제시하면 받을 수 있는 VIP Guest 티켓. 뒷면의 QR 코드를 스캔해 입장하는 방식입니다.
VIP 입장권은 그대로 지참해 접수 게이트로 가면 부드럽게 입장할 수 있었습니다. 물론 게스트 동반자도 마찬가지입니다.
【2】짐
Art Basel Hong Kong에서 잊어서는 안 될 짐에 대해 비망록을 겸해 남겨두고자 합니다.
※사전에 정보를 알려준 컬렉터 친구 A씨께 감사!
홍콩 달러 현금:홍콩 공항에 도착하면 바로 환전합시다(일본보다 환율 유리). 캐시리스 결제가 그다지 확산되지 않아 현금이 필요합니다. Basel 회장 근처에는 환전소가 없었습니다(2019년 현장 확인).
신용카드 결제가 불가능한 갤러리도 있었습니다 — 현금으로 구입하는 컬렉터. ※사진은 Art Central Hong Kong
스마트폰:다양한 정보 검색, 현지에서의 연락(전화나 메일, LINE 등), 목적지까지의 지도 이용, 카메라 기능을 이용한 사진 촬영 등…….
오프라인 Google 지도:스마트폰에서 데이터를 소비하지 않고 이용 가능. 강력 추천합니다!
인터넷 환경:스마트폰을 지원하는 해외 대응 SIM과 모바일 Wi-Fi도 필수 아이템입니다. Basel 홍콩 회장 내에서는 무료 Wi-Fi를 이용할 수 있었지만, 역이나 거리 등 공공장소에서 이용 가능한 무료 Wi-Fi는 그리 많지 않은 인상이었습니다.
보조 배터리:필자의 스마트폰 사용 빈도가 높았던 탓도 있겠지만, 하루 종일 사용한 탓에 배터리 소모가 상당히 빨랐습니다. 안심을 위해서라도 챙기고 싶은 아이템 중 하나입니다.
여행용 변환 플러그 어댑터:홍콩의 전기 콘센트는 일본과 다릅니다. 변환 어댑터를 준비해 둡시다.
필자는 무인양품의 “여행용 변환 플러그 어댑터”에 “해외 겸용 USB 전원 콘센트”를 연결해 사용했습니다.
디지털카메라:모든 작품 촬영이 가능한 Basel 홍콩. 스마트폰 카메라도 좋지만, 필자는 디지털카메라도 지참해 사용했습니다. 주머니에도 들어가는 소형 콤팩트 카메라 “GR3″를 추천합니다. 상당한 촬영 매수가 되므로, PC를 사용해 정리·확인하기 위해 스마트폰은 사용하지 않았습니다.
【3】복장 · 신발
Art Basel Hong Kong에서는 컬렉터로서의 몸가짐을 갖추고, 갤러리스트와의 커뮤니케이션이 원활하게 이뤄지도록 해 두고 싶습니다.
회장 내 갤러리스트들은 “구매 의사가 있는 컬렉터”를 눈여겨보고 있습니다.
관람객의 복장은 각양각색. 셀럽들 사이에 반바지·티셔츠 차림의 청년이 섞여 있기도 하고, 회장 내는 카오스입니다.
관여를 피하고 싶다면 별개지만, 갤러리스트와의 커뮤니케이션 방식에 따라 컬렉션에 유익한 정보가 제공되는 경우가 있는 듯합니다. 재킷을 입고 스마트하게 차려입으면 저쪽에서 먼저 말을 걸어올 확률이 올라가는 모양입니다. 고급스러운 패션에 감싸인 관람객에게 갤러리스트가 슬금슬금 다가가는 장면을 여러 번 목격했습니다.
단정한 몸가짐으로 회장에 들어가면 갤러리스트의 대응도 적지 않게 달라질 것입니다. 필자는 재킷 없는 사복 차림이었지만, 세계적으로 유명한 Leica 카메라를 목에 걸고 있었기 때문에 “Nice camera!”라며 거리를 좁혀준 갤러리스트가 여러 명 있었습니다. 또한 갤러리스트에게 정면으로 마주하는 자세로 임한 덕분에, 동경하던 작가의 작품을 특별히 보여주거나, 비매품 화집을 양도받는 등 다양한 좋은 혜택을 받았습니다. 조금 더 격식 있는 복장이었다면 대응이 더 좋았을지도 모릅니다. 앞으로의 과제로 기록해 둡니다.
갤러리스트에 따라 전시 외 작품과 만날 기회가 넓어집니다 — 창고에서 작품을 꺼내주는 갤러리스트
복장과 관련해 신는 신발에도 주의를 기울여 주시길 바랍니다. 어쨌든 보행 거리가 길어지는 Basel 홍콩. 신발은 걷기 편한 것이어야 합니다.
필자의 신발은 스위스제 스니커즈 “On”.
Basel 홍콩에도 출점하는 유명 여성 갤러리스트도 애용하는 러닝 슈즈지만, 시크한 디자인이라 재킷에 매치해도 어울리는 디자인입니다. 경량이므로 피로도가 낮은 신발이니, 관심 있으시면 시도해 보시길.
【4】항공권과 숙박
현지 호텔은 가능한 한 빨리 잡아 두고 싶습니다. Booking.com 등 예약 사이트를 사용해 취소 가능한 방을 미리 확보해 두면, 저렴하고 좋은 조건을 끌어낼 수 있습니다.
홍콩 공항에서 — 저가 항공 “HK Express”를 이용.
비행기도 목적에 따라 이른 확보가 필요합니다.
필자는 저가 항공으로 왕복 4만 엔 정도로 잡을 수 있었습니다(예약은 1월 25일).
홍콩편은 편수도 많고 선택지도 풍부한 편이지만, Art Basel을 목적으로 하는 여행객도 많을 것으로 예상됩니다. 이른 사전 예약을 추천합니다.
【5】현지의 부대 이벤트
Art Basel Hong Kong 개최 기간 중에는 홍콩 일대가 아트로 물듭니다.
주변 시설과 갤러리들도 이 타이밍에 맞춰 다양한 기획을 전개하며 사람을 모으고 있었습니다.
“pacific-place”라는 상업 시설에서는 Miwa Komatsu의 개인전 개최를 기념해 라이브 페인팅이 열려 큰 인기를 얻고 있었습니다.
이 이벤트는 Whitestone Gallery의 기획으로, 현지에서 개최된 Miwa Komatsu의 개인전과 연동된 이벤트였다고 합니다.
그리고 같은 시기에 열린 것이 KAWS의 개인전.
PMQ라는 시설에서 개최되며 입장 무료라는 정보까지는 얻고 있었지만, 웹사이트에서 사전 예약이 필요하다는 것까지는 알지 못했습니다.
VIP 슬롯은 유료였지만, 귀국길에 오르는 관계로 타이밍이 맞지 않았습니다……PACE, Hauser&Wirth, David Zwirner 등 저명한 갤러리가 모여 있는 H Queen’s 빌딩
또한 홍콩의 기존 갤러리 순례도 즐거움 중 하나입니다. H Queen’s에는 많은 저명 갤러리가 입점해 있어 한 번에 관람 기회를 체험할 수 있는 장소입니다. ※일요일에는 휴관하는 갤러리가 많습니다.
【6】아트 외의 추천 스팟
Basel 홍콩에서는 어쨌든 지칩니다.
일본에서 오는 여행의 피로도 있지만, 회장까지의 이동, 회장 내 보행 거리도 상당한 부담이 됩니다.
Basel에 이어 Art Central과 갤러리, 그 밖의 장소들을 둘러보면 상상 이상으로 다리가 피로해집니다. 홍콩에 갈 때는 여러 날에 걸쳐 몸을 쓰게 될 것입니다. 가능한 한 회복에 힘쓰고 싶은 법입니다. 그래서 추천하는 것이 마사지. 홍콩에는 태국식 마사지 가게가 모여 있는 구역이 있어, 상당히 저렴한 가격에 마사지를 받을 수 있습니다.
필자가 큰맘 먹고 들어간 태국 마사지 가게. 이 분위기에서 리뷰도 보지 않고 뛰어들었습니다.
일본어 검색으로 나온 추천 마사지 가게는 인터폰을 눌러도 반응이 없었습니다. 포기하고 주변을 어슬렁거리며 찾아봤습니다. 장소는 완차이 주변입니다.
그러다 지나가면서 눈에 들어온 간판을 보고 가격이 저렴하다는 것에 이끌려 입점했습니다. “足君健康”이라는 가게입니다.
대개의 마사지 가게는 잡거 빌딩의 2층이나 3층에서 영업합니다.
가게 문을 열자 상당히 어두운 조명에 수상한 분위기입니다.
먼저 온 손님은 1명, 접수는 아주머니, 마사지사는 모두 젊은 여성(다섯 명 정도가 앞의 의자에 나란히 앉아 있었습니다). 다소 망설임이 있었지만, 이쪽은 어쨌든 피곤한 몸. 가격도 저렴해 전신 코스 60분 180홍콩달러(일본 엔으로 약 2,600엔)를 요청했습니다.
준비된 반바지로 갈아입고 침대에 누웠습니다. 커튼으로 구분된 개인실 같은 침대입니다.
시술사는 남성으로 부탁드리고 싶었지만, 예상과 달리 젊은 여성의 마사지 스킬은 상당한 수준. 결론부터 말하자면 매우 훌륭했습니다! 어쨌든 열심히 시술해 주었고, 중간중간 “OK?”라며 확인해 주는 등 부드러운 분위기에 감싸였습니다.
몸 전체가 가벼워지고 다리의 부기도 빠진 듯, 신고 있던 신발에 발을 넣자 입점 전에 비해 헐렁해졌습니다.
※이후 심야에 방문한 컬렉터 친구에게는 다른 서비스가 있었다는 등, 없었다는 등……
마사지 효과 덕분인지, 다음 날의 활동을 활발히 할 수 있는 성과를 느꼈습니다. 홍콩의 태국 마사지는 저렴하고 품질도 높아 정말 추천합니다!
정리
이상, 필자가 느낀 Basel 홍콩에서의 주의점을 정리해 보았습니다.
이번이 첫 Basel 홍콩 참가이므로 아직 전모가 보이지 않을지도 모릅니다.
기재한 내용 외에도 미처 알아채지 못한 점들이 많을 것이나, 다음 이후에도 거듭 방문해 홍콩의 즐거움을 더 깊이 추구해 나가고자 합니다.
