東京造形大学の非常勤講師としてお勤めになり、現在では作家業に専念されていますが、2020年はコロナ禍でも精力的に活動し、3月に教え子でもある若手作家の藍嘉比沙耶さんとの2人展をEUKARYOTEで開催しました。
その他、6月〜8月に群馬県立近代美術館でのグループ展に参加、7月にはM画廊で個展、秋には代官山にて、アパレルブランドの立ち上げた新スペース、UP SIDE DOWN Galleryとのコラボレーション企画の予定もあるそうです。
門田光雅さんの今後の制作活動に注目していきたいと思います。
Studio Visit: Mitsumasa Kadota
We visited the studio of abstract painter Mitsumasa Kadota.
Our visit took place in early October 2020, right when Tokyo had just been added to the Go To campaign. It was a clear, crisp autumn morning.

Born in 1980 and a graduate of Tokyo Zokei University, Mitsumasa Kadota is represented by M Gallery (Ashikaga, Tochigi) as his mother gallery, and works widely across the country with shows at TEZUKAYAMA GALLERY in the west and EUKARYOTE in the east.

Kadota’s paintings are abstract works overflowing with rich, vibrant color.
He explores expression by translating the fluctuations of his own memories and emotions into the colors and brushstrokes of painting.

Kadota keeps a low profile in terms of public communication, but his works have made their way into a wide range of collections both in Japan and abroad. He produces a large number of paintings, yet available works remain relatively scarce.
In the autumn of 2019, he held his first major overseas solo exhibition “Kadota” at Lincoln Center in New York, supported by MoMA. Cody Franchetti, the nephew of Cy Twombly, is said to have acquired works from the show.

Having been selected as a Holbein Scholarship recipient in the past, Kadota’s studio was stocked with an enormous amount of Holbein paints. According to him, more than 50 different colors are kept on hand at all times.

While he formerly served as a part-time lecturer at Tokyo Zokei University, Kadota now devotes himself fully to his practice. Despite the pandemic, 2020 has been active for him: in March he held a two-person show at EUKARYOTE with his former student, the young artist Saya Aikahi; from June to August he participated in a group exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, Gunma; in July he had a solo show at M Gallery; and in autumn he has a collaboration planned with UP SIDE DOWN Gallery, a new space launched by an apparel brand in Daikanyama.
We look forward to following Mitsumasa Kadota’s practice in the years ahead.

造访时间是东京刚被纳入 Go To 活动的 2020 年 10 月初，一个秋高气爽的晴朗上午。
Kadota 曾任东京造形大学的非专任讲师，如今则专注于创作。即便在 2020 年疫情之下，他也活跃依旧：3 月在 EUKARYOTE 与他的学生、年轻艺术家 Saya Aikahi 举办了双人展；6 月至 8 月参加了 The Museum of Modern Art, Gunma 的群展；7 月于 M Gallery 举办个展；据说秋季还预定与服饰品牌新开设的空间 UP SIDE DOWN Gallery 展开合作企划。
期待 Mitsumasa Kadota 今后的创作动向。

Mitsumasa Kadota는 1980년생으로 Tokyo Zokei University를 졸업했으며, M Gallery(도치기현 아시카가시)를 마더 갤러리로 두고, 서쪽으로는 TEZUKAYAMA GALLERY, 동쪽으로는 EUKARYOTE 등에서 폭넓게 활동하고 있습니다.

Kadota가 그리는 회화는 화려한 색채로 가득 찬 추상화입니다.
자신의 기억과 감정의 흔들림을 회화의 색채와 붓 터치로 치환하여 표현을 탐구하고 있습니다.
아틀리에 풍경
Kadota는 적극적인 정보 발신을 자제하고 있지만, 그의 작품은 국내외 폭넓은 컬렉터의 손에 건네졌으며, 제작하는 작품 수는 많음에도 불구하고 구매 가능한 작품은 비교적 적은 상황입니다.
2019년 가을에는 MoMA의 지원을 받아 뉴욕 링컨 센터에서 첫 해외 개인전 “Kadota”를 대규모로 개최했습니다. 출품작은 Cy Twombly의 조카 Cody Franchetti가 소장했다고 합니다.

과거 Holbein Scholarship 장학생으로 선정된 적도 있어, 아틀리에에는 Holbein 물감이 대량으로 비치되어 있었습니다. 이야기를 들어보니 물감은 50가지 이상의 색상이 상시 구비되어 있다고 합니다.

Tokyo Zokei University에서 시간 강사로도 근무한 바 있는 그는, 현재는 작가 활동에 전념하고 있습니다. 2020년에는 코로나 상황 속에서도 정력적으로 활동하여, 3월에 제자이기도 한 신진 작가 Saya Aikahi와의 2인전을 EUKARYOTE에서 개최했습니다.
그 외에도 6월부터 8월까지 The Museum of Modern Art, Gunma에서의 그룹전에 참가, 7월에는 M Gallery에서 개인전, 가을에는 다이칸야마에서 어패럴 브랜드가 새롭게 오픈한 공간 UP SIDE DOWN Gallery와의 협업 기획도 예정되어 있다고 합니다.
