Goro Inagaki, who is active in a wide range of fields including stage and film criticism, has been appointed as the Special Supporter of “Klimt: Vienna – Japan 1900,” which opens on April 23, 2019 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in Ueno.

[Message on his appointment as Special Supporter]
I have been appointed Special Supporter for the exhibition of Gustav Klimt, the painter of fin-de-siècle Vienna. When I visited Vienna last spring, I had the chance to see his works in person, and I was captivated by their splendor, delicacy, and overwhelming presence, so I feel a mysterious connection here.
I once played Beethoven on stage, and I understand that a reproduction of the 34-meter-long mural Klimt created on the theme of the Ninth Symphony will also be on display. I can hardly wait to stand in that space.
I am also taking on the audio guide for the first time, so I hope you will look forward to it.
Inagaki has appeared in film critiques of painters who were active alongside Klimt, and played Beethoven in the stage play “No.9 – The Immortal Melody –,” a work depicting the life of the composer Beethoven. He clearly has a personal connection to and deep interest in late-19th to early-20th-century Viennese culture.
The exhibition will feature a precise full-scale reproduction of the 34-meter mural “Beethoven Frieze,” which Klimt created inspired by Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. The work is a masterpiece representing Klimt’s “Golden Style” period and is one of the major highlights of the exhibition.
Ahead of the revival of “No.9 – The Immortal Melody –” last autumn, Inagaki visited Vienna, touring the house where Beethoven lived and his gravesite, and also had the opportunity to view Klimt’s works.
Having encountered Klimt’s works through so many different threads of fate, Inagaki will share the appeal of the exhibition through his own experiences, and also appear as a guest narrator on the audio guide. This is the first time he has ever taken on an audio guide.

Born December 8, 1973, in Tokyo. Debuted in 1991.
Major TV appearances include “Kindaichi Kosuke Series” (2004–09, CX) and “Ill-Tempered Fruit” (2016, EX).
Major film appearances include “Hypnosis” (1999, dir. Masayuki Ochiai), “University of Laughs” (2004, dir. Mamoru Hoshi), “13 Assassins” (2010, dir. Takashi Miike), “Once Again, Kanako” (2013, dir. Minoru Kurimura), “Oshin” (2013, dir. Shin Togashi), and “The Girl” (2016, dir. Yukiko Mishima).
In 2017, he set one record after another—including over 74 million total views—on AbemaTV’s “72-Hour Honne TV,” on which he appeared with Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, Shingo Katori, and others.
He also serves as Special Supporter of the Nippon Foundation Paralympic Support Center. Recent notable work includes the omnibus film “Crap Guys and the Beautiful World” (2018), in which his portrayal of a distinctive character drew wide attention, and the stage production “No.9 – The Immortal Melody –,” in which he takes the lead role.
“Half a World Away” (dir. Junji Sakamoto) opens on February 15, and further releases such as “Barbara” (2019, dir. Macoto Tezka) are also lined up.
