I was given the chance to visit the studio of the art practitioner Yuichi Hirako.
The timing of my visit was August 2020, during a heat wave across Japan. It’s a new studio (Tokyo) that had just been completed in July.

Yuichi Hirako is an art practitioner who presents paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, and more, with the relationship between plants and humans as his theme.

Hirako paints works focusing on the relationship between plants and humans, picking up and creating from the ambiguous and interesting parts of their relationship.

Vases and pots appear frequently among the motifs because he focuses on the unique development by which they went from functional presences for growing plants to having artistic value, he says.
In the relationship between plants and people, one senses a perspective and questioning gaze toward how they’ve achieved a unique development from their original purpose, with the relationship becoming increasingly ambiguous.

Also, cats and dogs are relatively often-painted motifs.
Cats and dogs are animals that originally lived in nature and now live together with humans; he said he paints them as symbolic presences that go back and forth between the natural world and human society, crossing between them.

Partly because universal motifs centered on plants are depicted, Hirako’s works are supported by collectors and art professionals around the world.
Building on a career of staying in England for five years, including attending an art school in London, he has actively approached overseas galleries. A career that doesn’t stop such steps connects to his current position too.

The art materials Hirako uses are mainly acrylic paint.
Depending on the purpose, he uses three types of matte acrylic paint (School Gouache, Amsterdam, Holbein) differently, he says.

Using paints that suppress coloration and highly saturated paints, and sometimes mixing them, he controls color. Also, he uses two types of brushes—soft pig bristle and firm nylon—sometimes processing them by cutting the tips, using them differently according to his production intent.

Amid the COVID situation from spring 2020, exhibition schedules seemed to have fluctuated greatly, but the schedule from autumn 2020 onward is extremely packed, with a wide variety of artist activities planned—solo exhibitions, art fairs, edition-figure projects, and more.
He recently announced a gallery transfer, and there’s anticipation that the scope of his activities will expand further.

꽃병이나 항아리가 모티프 중에서도 많이 등장하는 것은, 식물을 기르는 기능적 존재에서 미술적 가치를 지니게 된 독자적인 발전에 주목하고 있기 때문이라고 합니다.

또한 고양이나 개도 비교적 자주 그려지는 모티프입니다.
고양이와 개는 원래 자연에 살다가 현대에는 인간과 함께 생활하는 동물인데, 자연계와 인간 사회를 오가며 교차하는 상징적 존재로 그리고 있다는 이야기였습니다.

식물을 중심으로 하는 보편적인 모티프가 그려지고 있는 것도 있어, 히라코의 작품은 전 세계의 컬렉터나 미술 관계자로부터 지지받고 있습니다.
영국 런던의 미술학교에 다니는 등 5년간 영국에 체류한 커리어를 바탕으로, 해외 갤러리에 적극적으로 접근해 왔습니다. 그런 발걸음을 멈추지 않는 커리어가 현재의 포지션으로도 이어지고 있습니다.

히라코가 사용하는 화재는 주로 아크릴 물감입니다.
목적에 따라 광택이 없는 3종류의 아크릴 물감（스쿨 과슈, 암스테르담, 홀베인）을 구분해 사용한다고 합니다.

발색을 억제하는 물감이나 채도가 높은 물감을 사용하고, 때로는 그것들을 혼색하면서 색채를 컨트롤하고 있습니다. 또한 붓은 부드러운 돼지털과 단단한 나일론의 2종류를 사용하며, 때로는 붓끝을 자르는 등의 가공을 하면서 제작 의도에 따라 구분해 사용합니다.

2020년 봄부터의 코로나 사태 속에서 전람회 스케줄이 크게 변동되었던 듯하지만, 2020년 가을 이후의 스케줄은 과밀을 극하여 개인전, 아트 페어, 에디션 피규어 기획 등 다종다양한 아티스트 활동이 예정되어 있는 듯합니다.
