奈良美智さんは、2019年12月5日(木)に60歳の誕生日を迎えました。還暦を祝って企画されたイベントです。素晴らしいパフォーマンスを見せてくれたのは女性ソロアーティストのReiさんと、曽我部恵一さんです。特に、Reiさんの歌ったSex Pistolsの名曲「Anarchy in the UK」のカバーが秀逸でした。メランコリックでスローな弾き語りが素晴らしくて感動しましたし、奈良さんの描く少女が作品から出てきたようなビジュアルが重なり、心が動きました。

Last week I visited Hara Museum of Contemporary Art for the first time in a while, and something surprising happened.
At Hara Museum ARK in Gunma, I had once run into an artist entirely by chance — and this time I ran into that very same artist again. What a coincidence! And there was one sad episode too. A poster from the Izumi Kato exhibition was on sale, but just as I was about to buy it, the customer ahead of me took the last one — my luck ran out. Regrettable. On the bright side, I did manage to get all 8 flyer variations from the Kenjiro Okazaki exhibition — so I’ll take that as a win.
Two Yoshitomo Nara events in a row
Last week I was able to meet Yoshitomo Nara himself twice.
The first was a special lecture by Yoshitomo Nara, “Days of Travel and Making,” held at Meiji University.

The lecture was held at Meiji University because Professor Masato Goda of the same university had contributed an essay to Yoshitomo Nara’s first solo museum exhibition, held at Yokohama Museum of Art.
The lecture was in two parts: the first half looked back on his travels through photo slides, and the second half covered his painting practice. Nara said that his own art-making activities take up “20%” of his time, and the remaining “80%” goes to various other endeavors.
His travel stories, through the photographs, conveyed a gentle and unhurried atmosphere. The talk moved along peacefully, filled with warm episodes that revealed his character.
The second half about art was fascinating.
It was moving to see slides of a painting’s process (adding, erasing, the surface changing dramatically) unfold. Nara’s remark that “it takes courage to erase a painting you thought was no good” left a strong impression on me. The slides recorded the process of painting and repainting the same picture many times, and it was striking to see that the final image ended up completely different from the start. His words — “I confirm the courage to change” — stayed with me deeply.
The making process Nara showed in the slides begins with arranging paints on the canvas, checking the balance, then destroying the picture, then repeating. In the end, he considers a painting complete “when a life dwells in it.” Nara’s talk that day was smooth and flowing.
When asked what kind of artist becomes successful, he answered, “If you’re the same as others, you end up competing. Do something different. It’s up to each person” — a memorable answer.
The second event was his 60th birthday, a kanreki (sixtieth) celebration.
It was a one-night-only music event featuring many rock artists Yoshitomo Nara loves.
Yoshitomo Nara turned 60 on Thursday, December 5, 2019. The event was organized to celebrate his kanreki. Wonderful performances were delivered by the female solo artist Rei and by Keiichi Sokabe. In particular, Rei’s cover of the Sex Pistols classic “Anarchy in the U.K.” was outstanding. Her melancholic, slow, solo rendition was moving, and layered with visuals that recalled the girls in Nara’s paintings — as if they had stepped out of the works — it truly stirred my heart.

An artist as YouTuber
I learned that Atsushi Kaga, an artist I greatly admire, has opened a YouTube channel.
He is going all out — even live-streaming from the venue of a charity auction where his own works were consigned. Honestly, I was surprised.

The 5G era is nearly here, so I expect the environment for watching video to change dramatically for the better. I do want to make better use of YouTube myself, but editing looks like a lot of work, and for now I’m not actively pursuing it. If anyone knows good tools, please let me know.
An art-related YouTube channel I check from time to time is “NYC GALLERY OPENINGS”. It’s a valuable channel that introduces New York galleries by video, and it already has 15,000 subscribers. The videos filmed at gallery openings are especially recommended — you can feel the local atmosphere as if you were there yourself. I’d love to go to New York in 2020.
In closing
It’s the twelfth month, and I’m rearranging things at home.
I’m moving works into storage and re-hanging others, buying new bookshelves and reorganizing catalogues and artist monographs. I’m also compiling the Best 10 lists for exhibitions and DMs.
I got my New Year cards done early, so they’re already printed and delivered. I asked the designer who made my business cards to design them, and they turned out great. Lots of things in motion. The year is nearly over.
到了年末，我在家里做整理布置。
把作品搬进仓库、更换挂展；也购置了书架，整理图录与作品集。展览与 DM 的 Best 10 也在总结中。
贺年卡我提前完成，已经收到成品。委托为我设计名片的设计师帮忙制作，成品非常好。各项事宜都在推进中。今年也所剩无几了。

지난주에는 오랜만에 Hara Museum of Contemporary Art에 다녀왔는데, 놀라운 일이 있었습니다.
군마의 Hara Museum ARK에서 우연히 마주쳤던 미술 작가가 있었는데, 이번에도 같은 작가와 뵙게 된 것입니다. 정말 어마어마한 우연! 그리고 또 하나는 슬픈 사건. Izumi Kato 전의 포스터가 판매 중이어서 사려고 했는데, 앞사람이 마지막 한 장을 가져가는 바람에 매진이 되어 버렸습니다… 운이 없네요, 안타깝습니다. Kenjiro Okazaki 전의 8종 전단은 손에 넣었으니, 그것으로 위안 삼아 봅니다.

지난주에는 Yoshitomo Nara 본인을 두 번이나 만날 수 있었습니다. 첫 번째는 메이지 대학에서 열린 Yoshitomo Nara 의 특별 강연 “여행과 제작의 나날”입니다.

메이지 대학에서 개최된 것은, Yokohama Museum of Art에서 열린 Yoshitomo Nara의 미술관 첫 개인전에 메이지 대학의 Masato Goda 교수가 기고했던 인연이 계기가 된 듯합니다.
강연은 사진 슬라이드를 보며 여행을 돌아보는 전반부와, 회화 제작에 관한 후반부의 2부 구성이었습니다. Nara는 자신의 미술 제작 활동은 “20%”이고, 나머지 “80%”는 그 외 다양한 활동에 쏟고 있다고 합니다.
여행 이야기는 사진을 통해 목가적이고 여유로운 분위기가 전해졌습니다. 그의 인품을 엿볼 수 있는 따뜻한 에피소드들이 화기애애하게 이어졌습니다.
후반부의 미술 이야기는 매우 흥미로웠습니다.
슬라이드 사진으로 회화가 완성되어 가는 과정(그리고 지우고, 화면이 점점 달라지는 모습이 흥미로웠음)을 볼 수 있어 감동적이었습니다. “안 되겠다 싶은 그림을 지우는 데는 용기가 필요하다”는 Nara의 말이 인상적이었습니다. 슬라이드에는 같은 그림을 몇 번이고 다시 그려나가는 과정이 기록되어 있었고, 최종적으로는 완전히 다른 그림으로 변화하는 결과에 놀랐습니다. “바꾸어 갈 용기를 확인한다”는 말이 마음에 깊이 남았습니다.
슬라이드에서 보여준 Nara의 제작 방식은, 우선 캔버스 위에 물감을 배치하듯 그리고, 균형을 확인한 뒤에는 그림을 뭉개고, 이 과정을 반복하는 것입니다. 최종적으로 “그림에 생명이 깃들면 완성”이라고 봅니다. 이날 Nara의 이야기는 매끄러웠습니다.
어떤 아티스트가 성공하는가?라는 질문에 대해, “남과 같으면 경쟁하게 된다. 남과 다른 일을 한다. 사람마다 다르다”라는 말이 인상적이었습니다.
두 번째는 60세, 환갑 이벤트입니다.
Nara가 사랑하는 록 아티스트들이 다수 모여 열린, 하룻밤 한정의 음악 이벤트입니다.

미술 작가 YouTuber
좋아하는 미술 작가 Atsushi Kaga가 YouTuber로서 채널을 개설했다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다.
심지어 자신의 작품이 출품된 자선 경매 현장에서 생중계하는 등, 거침없이 밀어붙이고 있습니다. 솔직히 놀랐습니다…

5G 시대가 곧 도래하므로, 영상 시청 환경이 극적으로 좋은 방향으로 변할 것이라 생각합니다. 저 또한 YouTube를 좀 더 잘 활용하고 싶다고는 생각하지만, 편집이 큰 일처럼 느껴져 현재로서는 적극적으로 활용할 생각은 없습니다. 좋은 도구가 있다면 알려주시면 좋겠습니다.
가끔 체크하는 아트 계열 YouTube 채널은 “NYC GALLERY OPENINGS”라는 채널입니다. 뉴욕의 갤러리를 영상으로 소개해 주는 귀중한 채널로, 이미 15,000명의 구독자가 있습니다. 갤러리 오프닝을 촬영한 영상은 특히 추천. 현지의 분위기가 손에 잡힐 듯 전해집니다. 2020년에는 가고 싶네요, 뉴욕.
