Rehanging the Artworks
I bring change to the art displayed in my own room by swapping the hanging pieces.
I most often use the seasonal transitions as the trigger, and each time I set a theme, then shuttle back and forth between my storage unit (warehouse) and home, moving works in and out.
For this rehang I drastically reduced the number of pieces and created a wall arrangement with plenty of breathing room.
The atmosphere changed considerably, and the result feels really good.
By making space, the relationships between neighboring works have more room to breathe, and the impression they give has changed a great deal.
Rather than packing pieces tightly together so they clash, hanging them in a way that protects the strength of each work has completely transformed the view.
Staging change through rehanging is, you might say, one of the pleasures of building an art collection.
Enjoying Art with All Five Senses — On the Power of Fragrance
Timing it with the rehang, I had an occasion to invite acquaintances over.
Rehanging the works led naturally to a thorough cleaning of the apartment, which in turn set the mood of “well, I could actually have people over.”
We were talking away about art over food and drinks when, at one point, one of my acquaintances quietly gave a single spritz of perfume into the room. The scent spread instantly, and in a flash the space felt entirely different from what it had been.
I had never much cared for perfume — if anything, I put it in the category of things I disliked — but I ended up praising the fragrance my acquaintance was wearing rather generously, and that is how things came about.
Even a single spritz produced a bright, sweeping change in the atmosphere, and I was genuinely surprised.

The fragrance turned out to be from the celebrated perfume house “Jo Malone London,” and the scent was “English Pear & Freesia Cologne” — reportedly their most popular fragrance.
It is sweet, uncloying, and refreshingly clean.
When the scent of the room changes, it is uncanny how the works on display seem to come alive.
The air of the room is transformed, and how the works appear shifts along with it.
I liked it so much that I went to the store later to buy a bottle myself. *The staff kindly walked me through everything, and I became a fan.

Fragrance is only one option — putting on music, or sipping a drink while you look, each of us has our own way of spending time with art.
By stimulating the five senses, a fresh gaze can arise even toward pieces you own and have long grown used to.
Exhibitions at museums and galleries ask us to accept the presentation as it is given, but with rehanging or with fragrance we can enjoy our own collection in whatever viewing style we like — and that is one of the great pleasures of being an art collector.

작품을 다시 걸다
저는 방에 걸어 둔 아트 작품을 바꿔 걸며 변화를 주고 있습니다.
특히 계절이 바뀌는 시점을 기점으로 삼는 경우가 많고, 매번 테마를 설정하면서 트렁크 룸(창고)과 집을 오가며 작품을 꺼내거나 넣곤 합니다.
이번 교체에서는 작품 수를 과감히 줄이고, 공간에 여유가 있는 벽걸이 배치를 시도해 봤습니다.
분위기가 바뀌어 매우 좋은 느낌이 되었습니다.
공간을 만들어 준 덕분에, 서로 이웃한 작품들 사이의 관계에 여유가 생기고 인상이 크게 달라진 듯합니다.
빽빽하게 걸어 작품끼리 부딪히게 하는 것보다, 각 작품이 지닌 힘을 지켜 주도록 걸었더니 눈에 보이는 풍경 자체가 확 달라졌습니다.
작품을 다시 걸며 변화를 연출하는 일은, 아트 컬렉션을 즐기는 한 가지 방식이라 할 수 있겠지요.
오감으로 즐기는 아트 — 향기의 작용에 대하여
작품을 다시 거는 타이밍에 맞춰 지인들을 집에 초대할 기회가 있었습니다.
작품을 다시 거는 일은 자연스레 집 안 대청소로 이어졌고, “집에 초대해도 괜찮겠다”는 분위기까지 만들어 주었습니다.
식사와 술을 즐기며 아트에 대한 이야기꽃을 피우고 있는 도중, 지인 중 한 명이 슬며시 향수를 방 안에 한 번 뿌렸습니다. 향기는 순식간에 방 전체에 퍼졌고, 눈 깜짝할 사이에 지금까지와는 전혀 다른 공간처럼 느껴질 정도의 변화가 있었습니다.
원래 저는 향수를 그다지 좋아하지 않았고, 오히려 꺼리는 편에 가까웠지만, 지인이 뿌린 향기를 다소 치켜세우듯 칭찬한 것이 계기가 되어 그런 흐름으로 이어졌습니다.
단 한 번의 분사만으로도 공기 전체를 화사하게 바꾸는 그 변화에 정말 놀랐습니다.

방의 향기가 바뀌면 걸어 둔 작품에도 생명이 깃든 것처럼 보이니 참으로 신기합니다.
방 안 공기가 완전히 바뀌면서 작품이 눈에 들어오는 방식도 달라집니다.
너무나 좋아서 나중에 매장을 직접 찾아가 구입했습니다. ※점원이 여러 가지를 친절히 알려 주어 팬이 되었습니다.

미술관이나 갤러리의 전시는 관람자로서 주어진 그대로를 받아들이는 자리이지만, 다시 걸기나 향기를 통해 자유로운 감상 스타일로 컬렉션 작품을 즐길 수 있다는 것은, 아트 컬렉터에게 있어 커다란 즐거움입니다.
