I visited “NI/O,” the exhibition by third-year undergraduates of the Oil Painting Course, Department of Painting, Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts.
Personally, I prefer the third-year show to Geidai’s graduation exhibition, and I always look forward to it. The previous third-year show comes back to me fondly.
That’s because, while following the work of students who caught my eye at Geisai or the promotion exhibitions, I often find works from their third year that feel somehow free and unconstrained.
By the fourth-year “graduation exhibition,” I often sense a certain tension — as if the collars have been straightened — and I find myself, as a viewer, also becoming a bit too tense (this may just be my personal impression).

NI/O
This third-year show is set within a fictional city called “NI/O.”
“NI/O” is an abbreviation of New Input/Output, carrying the meaning of a city that repeatedly metabolizes as new objects and events are brought in and taken out. Beyond the individual works, the shape of the city that emerges through the collisions and collaborations among its inhabitants is also a highlight of this exhibition.

Each student presented their work as if recreating their own studio within an assigned section.
Right at the entrance is Daichi Igarashi. Last year’s third-year show “Mirage” gave me the impression of many orthodox painting works, but this year’s “NI/O” leaned more toward contemporary art.
The residents of the city each brought change in a competitive spirit, but compared to last year’s golden generation, it was a shame that no work particularly caught my attention this time.
Geidai三年级展
我前往参观了由Tokyo University of the Arts美术学部绘画科油画专攻本科三年级举办的展览”NI/O”。
比起Geidai的毕业展，笔者更喜欢三年级展，每次都非常期待。上一次的三年级展也令人回味。

필자는 게이다이의 졸업전보다 3학년전을 더 좋아해서, 매번 기대하고 있습니다. 지난 3학년전도 즐겁게 기억에 남아 있습니다.
게이사이나 진급전에서 눈에 띄었던 학생의 작품을 뒤쫓다 보면, 3학년 시기의 작품에서는 어딘가 자유롭고 여유로운 분위기를 발견할 수 있기 때문입니다.
4학년 시기의 “졸업전”이 되면, 어딘가 잔뜩 힘이 들어가 옷깃을 여민 듯한 느낌이 강해, 관람하는 쪽까지 괜히 힘이 들어가는 기분이 듭니다(어디까지나 필자의 개인적 인상일 수 있습니다).

NI/O
이번 3학년전의 설정은 “NI/O”라는 가상 도시가 무대입니다.
“NI/O”는 New Input/Output(새로운 입출력)의 약칭으로, 새로운 사물・사건이 반입되거나 반출됨으로써 도시로서의 대사를 반복한다는 의미입니다. 개별 작품뿐 아니라, 주민 간의 충돌이나 협업의 결과로 떠오르는 도시의 모습 또한 본 전시의 볼거리입니다.

각자에게 배정된 구획 안에서 아틀리에를 재현하듯이 작품을 전시하고 있었습니다.

지난해 3학년전 “신기루”는 정통파 회화 작품이 많았던 인상이었지만, 이번 “NI/O”전은 현대미술에 가까운 작품이 많았다는 느낌이었습니다.
도시의 주민들은 서로 경쟁하듯 변화를 주려 했지만, 지난해의 황금세대에 비해 특별히 마음을 사로잡는 작품이 없었던 점은 아쉬웠습니다.
昨年の3年生展「蜃気楼」が正統派のペインティング作品が多かった印象でしたが、今回の「NI/O」展は現代アート寄りの作品が多かったように思いました。
