A solo exhibition of Bice Lazzari (1900–1981), a painter who led Italian modernism, was on view at kaufmann repetto (Milan).

This exhibition shed light on Lazzari’s contributions to abstraction and Minimalism through her representative works from the 1950s to the 1970s.

Bice Lazzari (1900–1981) is one of the leading women abstract painters of 20th-century Italy. She is known for continuing to work even after losing most of her sight in her later years.

Medically, Lazzari’s loss of vision was caused by glaucoma.
Glaucoma is a disease that damages the optic nerve, and it became the main cause of her declining eyesight in old age. Even before that, toxicity from painting materials had been adversely affecting her vision. In fact, it was determined that the solvents used to thin oil paint were gradually harming her sight, and in 1962 she gave up working in oils. Contemporary reports at the time also stated that she moved away from traditional oil painting in 1959 due to “poisoning (intossicazione) from oil paints,” and from then on Lazzari shifted her practice toward relatively safer materials such as tempera, crayon, and acrylic. Thanks to this change in materials, she was able to continue working while temporarily holding off the deterioration of her sight.
Lazzari’s vision began to deteriorate significantly in the 1970s, and it is said she reached a state of near-blindness by the late 1970s. The works in this exhibition are drawn from the period leading up to that point.

In her later years, she was reevaluated alongside the rise of feminism. Her figure — continuing to create even as she lost her sight — surely embodies the spirit of an art that is at once serene and powerful.

Bice Lazzari(1900–1981)는 20세기 이탈리아를 대표하는 여성 추상 화가 중 한 명입니다. 만년에 시력을 거의 잃으면서도 제작을 이어간 것으로 잘 알려져 있습니다.

Lazzari의 시력 상실은 의학적으로는 녹내장(glaucoma)에 의한 것이었습니다.
녹내장은 시신경이 손상되는 병으로, 노년기에 접어든 그의 시력 저하의 주된 원인이 되었습니다. 또한 그 이전부터 회화 재료로 인한 중독도 시력에 악영향을 미치고 있었습니다. 실제로 유화 물감을 희석할 때 사용하는 용제가 서서히 시력을 갉아먹고 있음이 밝혀져, 1962년에는 유화 제작을 단념하게 됩니다. 당시의 보도에서도 “유화 물감에 의한 중독(intossicazione)”이 원인이 되어 1959년에 전통적인 유화에서 멀어졌다고 전해졌으며, 이후 Lazzari는 템페라, 크레용, 아크릴 물감 등 비교적 안전한 화재(畫材)를 사용하는 방향으로 창작을 전환했습니다. 이러한 재료의 변경 덕분에 한동안은 시력 악화를 억제하면서 제작을 이어갈 수 있었던 것입니다.
Lazzari의 시력이 현저하게 저하되기 시작한 것은 1970년대에 들어서면서였고, 1970년대 후반에는 거의 실명 상태에 이르렀다고 합니다. 이번 전시의 작품들은 그 이전까지의 작업에 해당합니다.

만년에는 페미니즘의 흐름과 더불어 재평가가 이루어졌고, 시력을 잃어가면서도 창작을 이어간 그의 모습은 고요하면서도 강인한 예술 정신을 구현하고 있다고 할 수 있지 않을까요.
