Yukimasa Ida “Crystallization”
Held from June 2 (Tue) to June 30 (Tue), 2020 — after the lifting of the state of emergency due to COVID-19 — Yukimasa Ida’s exhibition “Crystallization” marked the release of his first collected works.
At the GINZA ATRIUM of Ginza Tsutaya Books, the monumental work “Crystallization,” produced in 2020, was divided into 200 pieces and displayed as packaged special editions.

The method of finely dividing a single work and selling it anew is reminiscent of the “Severed Spots” project undertaken in April 2020 by the Brooklyn-based art collective “MSCHF.”
That project separated a single edition work from Damien Hirst’s signature “Spot Painting” series into 88 spots, selling them online as MSCHF’s new work “88 Spots.”

The Special Edition Arrives — Unboxing
The editor of this site, “Bur@rt,” entered the application by listing up to a fifth choice within the reception period. Keeping in mind the notice that “winners will be contacted successively from July 7 (Tue) onward,” I waited for that time.
Then, on July 10 (Fri) when I had nearly given up, the winning notification arrived from Tsutaya Books.
An email titled “[Yukimasa Ida Special Edition Collected Works] Notification of Lottery Results” was suddenly delivered.
After completing payment within the designated period, some time later it arrived via Yamato Transport.
Incidentally, the standard edition of the collected works reportedly recorded Ginza Tsutaya’shighest sales volume in history.
Taking out the box protected by bubble wrap reveals a cardboard box. On closer inspection, a white sticker with the edition number is printed on it.

Opening the box further, a vividly red satin-fabric box comes into view.

Carefully opening the box, the 200-part work described in the winning email was protected by a freely removable acrylic panel.

The acrylic panel was placed over the work as a lid, and on my collected piece — thickened with oil paint — some portions had transferred a bit of color onto the acrylic panel.
The excessively raised paint bulged up so much that parts touched the acrylic panel that protects the work.
When I opened the acrylic panel, the rich and thick fragrance of oil paint burst out all at once, stimulating my nose.

Although only slightly larger than the F4-sized “end of today series,” it gave a much larger impression than that.

Looking closely at the support, one sees it has been packaged as the cover of the collected works.
It is constructed as an integrated piece with the book, so the oil painting cannot be removed as a stand-alone work.

Whether to display it indoors using the attached acrylic panel, or to frame the collected works volume as it is — this promises to be a difficult decision.
Notably, a handwritten signature and edition number are inscribed on the back cover.

The reason for signing the back cover — despite it being a unique piece — was to establish it as a single painting while simultaneously asserting that it is also a book.

Once the oil painting and collected works volume are removed, a large-scale poster appears folded and sealed in a plastic bag. It could be called a group portrait of the 200 editions. I found myself searching for where my own edition was positioned.
The cover-work poster (486×1055mm), folded and sealed in plasticIt is printed so that the cut contours of each of the 200 divided works are visible.
After removing the poster, the last item to appear is the edition work “Portrait,” produced using RICOH’s technology. This comes in 10 colors, each in 20 editions.

“Portrait” is finished with distinctive raised textures, and turning it over shows that it is a hand-stretched canvas. The title, signature, and edition number were also handwritten on it.

Conclusion
This work has enormous presence, both in its packaging and in itself.
The strong power emanating from the actual piece overwhelms far more than any photographic image conveys.
As a fan of Yukimasa Ida, this became a wonderful gift.

긴자 츠타야 서점의 GINZA ATRIUM에서는, 2020년에 제작된 대작 《Crystallization》이 200개로 분할되어 특장판으로 패키지되어 전시되었습니다.

하나의 작품을 잘게 잘라 새로운 작품으로 판매하는 수법은, 2020년 4월에 브루클린을 거점으로 활동하는 아트 컬렉티브 “MSCHF”가 전개한 프로젝트 “Severed Spots”를 연상시킵니다.

특장판 도착~개봉
본 사이트 “Bur@rt”의 관리자는, 신청 접수 기간에 제5희망까지 기입해 응모했습니다. “당첨자는 7/7(화) 이후 순차 연락”이라는 안내를 마음에 새기고 기다렸습니다.
그리고 거의 포기하고 있던 7월 10일(금), 츠타야 서점으로부터 당첨 연락이 도착했습니다.
“【Yukimasa Ida_특장판 작품집】추첨 결과 안내”라는 제목의 메일이 갑자기 도착했습니다.
지정 기간 내에 입금한 후 얼마 지나지 않아 야마토 운수로 도착했습니다.
참고로 통상판 작품집은 긴자 츠타야역대 최다 판매 부수를 기록했다고 합니다.
에어캡으로 보호된 상자를 꺼내면 골판지 상자가 나타납니다. 자세히 보면 흰색 스티커에 에디션 번호가 인쇄되어 있습니다.

아크릴판은 뚜껑 역할을 하듯 덮여 있었고, 유화 물감으로 두께가 더해진 제 컬렉션 작품은, 일부가 아크릴판에 약간 색을 옮겨 놓았습니다.
지나치게 솟아오른 물감의 일부는, 작품 보호용 아크릴판에 닿을 정도로 융기해 있었습니다.
아크릴판을 열자, 풍부하고 진한 유화 물감의 향기가 단번에 방출되어 코를 자극합니다.

F4 사이즈로 그려진 《end of today 시리즈》보다 한 사이즈 큰 정도이지만, 그 이상으로 크게 느껴지는 인상을 받았습니다.

작품집과 연결되어 하나로 되어 있도록 만들어져 있어, 그려진 유화만을 작품으로 꺼낼 수는 없는 듯합니다.

부속 아크릴판을 활용해 실내에 전시할지, 작품집을 그대로 액자에 넣을지, 고민되는 선택이 될 것 같습니다.
