“Peter Doig” at The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo
Regarded today as one of the world’s most important artists, Peter Doig (b. 1959) will have his first-ever solo exhibition in Japan, “Peter Doig,” presenting works from his early career through his most recent output, at The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, from Wednesday, 26 February to Sunday, 14 June 2020.
■ The first solo exhibition in Japan of Peter Doig, a frontline figure in contemporary art whose global activity continues unabated.
■ Doig has held solo exhibitions at world-renowned museums such as Tate (London, 2008) and Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (2008).
His work is highly regarded in the art market as well: one of his signature pieces, Swamped (which will be shown in this exhibition), sold at auction for approximately US$26 million (approximately 3 billion yen at the time in 2015).
■ Constructed from a variety of elements — the compositions and motifs of modern masters such as Van Gogh and Gauguin, scenes from films, photographs, and landscapes and memories from his own experience — Doig’s work stirs the viewer’s imagination and memory, drawing us in without fail.
This exhibition presents a curated selection of works from his early career to the very latest, while also delving into his working methods.
■ Rare works, including large-scale pieces measuring more than three metres wide, will be gathered together. It is an unmissable opportunity to experience their scale in a museum setting — something a smartphone or printed reproduction can never convey.

오늘날 세계에서 가장 중요한 아티스트 중 한 명으로 손꼽히는 Peter Doig(1959~)의 초기작부터 최신작까지를 소개하는 일본 최초의 전시 “Peter Doig 전”이 2020년 2월 26일(수)부터 6월 14일(일)까지 The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo(도쿄국립근대미술관)에서 개최됩니다.
■ 현대미술의 최전선에서 세계적으로 활발한 활동을 이어가고 있는 Peter Doig의 일본 최초 개인전입니다.
■ Tate(런던, 2008년), Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris(파리시립근대미술관, 2008년) 등 세계 유수의 미술관에서 개인전을 개최해 왔습니다.
그의 작품은 미술 시장에서도 높은 평가를 받고 있으며, 대표작 중 하나인 《Swamped》(본 전시 출품 예정)은 경매에서 약 2,600만 미국 달러(2015년 당시 약 30억 엔)에 낙찰되었습니다.
■ 반 고흐나 고갱 등 근대 화가 작품의 구도와 모티프, 영화의 한 장면, 사진, 그리고 자신이 체험한 풍경과 기억 등 다양한 요소로부터 만들어지는 그의 작품은 보는 이의 상상력과 기억을 자극하며, 우리를 매료시키기에 부족함이 없습니다.
본 전시에서는 초기작부터 최신작까지 엄선된 작품들을 소개하는 동시에, 그의 제작 방법에도 다가섭니다.
