Once your collection accumulates to over 100 artworks—including smaller pieces—you inevitably run into the problem of storage space.
When you take a work into your home and display it, both the physical artwork and the storage box it originally came in remain, and you realize your collection is effectively swelling to double the volume.
Some might say, “Just throw away the boxes!”—but there are also moments when you need to store a piece while rotating a display, so the boxes are indispensable.
Concerned about condition control ahead of the rainy season, I finally took the plunge and decided to rent a storage unit.
Renting a Storage Facility
When it comes to storing artworks, the first name that springs to mind is the industry’s No.1, “Terada Warehouse.”
With their remarkable corporate philosophy of “not just storing things, but safeguarding value,” they are the leading company in the industry.
I have nothing but positive impressions of Terada Warehouse.
When I contacted Terada Warehouse to inquire, I was told there are three types of storage services available. ※As of June 2019
Art Storage Warehouse ※Area: 1 tsubo to 30 tsubo, Ceiling height: 2.1m–4.8m, Location: Tennozu Isle, Rate: from ¥40,000/tsubo (excl. tax) per month
Art Locker ※S size (65×120×135) Monthly rate from ¥20,000 (excl. tax), Locations: 13 sites in Tokyo and Yokohama
TERRADA ART STORAGE ※Per-piece basis, SSS size 90×180×100, monthly rate from ¥7,000, plus data creation fees etc.
Option ① at Tennozu had poor access from home, so I passed; option ③ was priced per piece and out of the question (I’d love to entrust it with the masterpiece of a renowned artist someday); so I decided to consider option ②, the “Art Locker.” ¥20,000 per month (excl. tax) seemed within reach. …However, there was no branch nearby.
So, keeping the “Art Locker” possibility on the table, I looked into whether any new alternatives existed—researching similar services.
Trunk Rooms
As a result of my search, the service that came up was “QURAZ.”
With 44 locations across Tokyo (as of writing) and further expansion into Kanagawa, Chiba, Nagoya, Osaka, Fukuoka and beyond, QURAZ is a major player in the trunk room industry.
QURAZ operates entire buildings dedicated to trunk rooms, meaning they manage everything from security to storage environment in-house.
※Warehouse services are premises rental contracts under real-estate leasing law, whereas trunk rooms are deposit-of-goods contracts—there’s a legal distinction between the two.

Since they manage the entire building, there were also several free parking spaces on-site.
I promptly signed up for a free tour via the website. Even weekend slots were relatively easy to book, though last-minute availability was gone.
A staff member gave me a personal tour of the facility.
The security card is designed so you can only press the button for your contracted floor.
Riding the elevator down to the floor, I was met with a scene I had never encountered before. It goes without saying, but the place was covered in rooms….
I got used to it later on, but the first sight is startling.
I had requested to view rooms of about 1 tatami mat in size. The staff consulted a list of vacancies as they guided me, but it wasn’t easy to reach the destination—the layout was complex enough to confuse even the staff.
The sheer number of rooms makes it hard to reach your target without a floor map.
Walking toward our destination, I found myself enjoying the variety of room sizes.
There are also coin-locker–style trunks, which shows they cater to a wide range of user needs.I looked at a 0.8-tatami room. Pricing is based on floor area—0.8 tatami, 1 tatami, and so on—but even within the same 0.8-tatami category, the width and depth vary by room, so caution is warranted.
Since I was picturing paintings, I was drawn to rectangular shapes longer than they are wide, so I toured various rooms while imagining how my works would fit.
As I walked around, I started to recognize which spots were good and which were not.
Even with centralized climate control, might the conditions differ from spot to spot when an entire building is being leased? That question crossed my mind.
Sure enough, I noticed that rooms near the windows tended to be more vacant. Windows would be hot in midsummer! Temperature swings must have some effect! So I ruled those out.
The criteria I ultimately chose were:
Rectangular over square (higher chance of accommodating large works). ※Even at the same price, sizes differ subtly.
Avoiding window-facing spots vulnerable to temperature swings (heat from windows could build up in summer).
Lower floors over higher (less affected by temperature).
Zones where climate control is effective (rooms near the blowers).
Locations close to the elevator (easier to move items in and out).
I made a point of choosing spots where air circulates well (spots most influenced by the blowers).
Loaner carts are available for free. My tour venue had three carts on hand for the whole building.
The Contract
Narrowing down to three options—0.5-tatami (¥10,300), 0.8-tatami (¥13,700), and 1-tatami (¥15,800)—and having seen them all, I decided to contract the 0.8-tatami room! ※All prices excl. tax. A 30%-off campaign for the first 5 months was included.
For reference, the standard estimate is that one tatami can hold “48 boxes” of typical mikan-crate-sized cardboard boxes. Something to bear in mind.
The deciding factors for choosing QURAZ over Terada Warehouse were:
Lower price
Easy access from home (walking distance)
24-hour access, freely in and out
Flexible sizing options for trunk rooms
Free luggage pickup from home (one-time only)
Which criteria matter most to you will determine how you make your choice.
In my case, price and access were the biggest deciding factors.
My collection is constantly growing, and rotations bring in new pieces too.
How to Use It
Renting a trunk room isn’t just a matter of cramming in artworks and empty boxes.
The key is to make effective use of the space you’ve been given.
The photo below shows the current state of my trunk after simply loading it up.

As you can see, once you place boxes directly on the floor, you inevitably end up with wasted vertical space.
The rental shelves mentioned earlier would work, but they cost ¥1,000 per month.
In the long run, buying a cheap shelf and installing it inside the trunk seems better; I’m currently looking into options.
Anything can be stored in the trunk aside from a handful of prohibited items (perishables, etc.), so I’d like to keep searching for smart storage methods.
What About Insurance?
Signing up with QURAZ automatically enrolls you in insurance (covered by QURAZ).
It applies in worst-case scenarios, but the staff mentioned they had never heard of a theft incident.
Security is well handled so there’s little to worry about, but having compensation on standby is reassuring.
Coverage amounts vary by room size.
BOX: ¥200,000
Up to 0.8 tatami: ¥400,000
1–1.6 tatami: ¥600,000
2–3.3 tatami: ¥800,000
4–6.5 tatami: ¥1,000,000
8 tatami+: ¥1,200,000

Conclusion
Signing a trunk-room contract instantly moved my home organization forward.
The space became so much more comfortable that I found myself wondering, “Why didn’t I do this sooner?”
That said, a fixed cost of ¥15,000 per month adds up to ¥180,000 a year. ※For the 0.8-tatami contract
¥180,000 is a substantial amount. It’s enough to purchase a fair number of artworks.
Still, the benefit of enjoying daily life alongside your art collection in a comfortable home is significant.
For readers considering this yourself, I’d urge careful thought—but personally, I felt it wasn’t a bad option at all.

“상자 따위 버려버려!”라는 의견도 있을 수 있지만, 실내에서 전시를 교체할 때 등 보관해야 할 순간이 반드시 오기 때문에, 상자는 아무래도 필요합니다.
컨디션이 걱정되는 장마철 이전에, 큰맘 먹고 창고 렌탈에 나서기로 했습니다.

“물건뿐 아니라 가치를 보관합니다”라는 훌륭한 기업 이념을 지닌 업계의 톱 러너입니다.
Terada Warehouse에는 좋은 인상밖에 없습니다.

①의 텐노즈는 자택에서의 접근성이 나빠 패스, ③은 점당 단위여서 논외(저명 작가의 마스터피스라면 부탁하고 싶습니다), ②의 “미술품 로커”를 검토해 보기로 했습니다. 매월 2만 엔(세금 별도)이라면 감당 가능합니다. …하지만 근처에 거점이 없습니다.
그래서 “미술품 로커”의 가능성을 남겨 둔 채, 새로운 선택지가 없는지 유사 서비스를 조사해 보았습니다.
트렁크룸
조사해 본 결과 등장한 것이 이 서비스, “QURAZ(큐라즈)”입니다.
도쿄도 내 44개 거점(기사 집필 현재)을 보유하고, 그 외 가나가와, 지바, 나고야, 오사카, 후쿠오카 등에도 진출한 트렁크룸 업계의 대기업입니다.
QURAZ는 건물 전체가 트렁크룸으로, 보안에서 수납 환경까지 모든 것을 통합 관리하고 있습니다.

필자의 견학 희망은 1조(다다미) 정도의 방을 보고 싶다는 것이었습니다. 직원이 빈 방 리스트를 보며 안내해 주셨지만, 좀처럼 원활히 도달하지 못했습니다. 직원조차 혼란스러워할 만큼 복잡함이 있습니다.
층별 지도가 없으면 목적한 방까지 가기 어려운 방 수입니다.
목적지를 향해 걸어가는 도중, 다양한 크기의 방들이 있어 즐거워집니다.

0.8조, 1조 등 바닥 면적으로 요금이 설정되어 있지만, 같은 0.8조라도 폭과 깊이가 방마다 달라 주의가 필요합니다.
필자는 회화 작품을 상정해 정사각형보다 장변이 긴 쪽에 매력을 느껴, 작품 사이즈를 상상하며 여러 장소를 견학했습니다.
돌아보는 사이에, 좋은 자리와 그렇지 않은 자리를 구별할 수 있게 되었습니다.
공조를 관리한다 해도, 건물 한 동을 통째로 빌린 경우 장소에 따라 컨디션의 차이가 생기지 않을까? 라는 의문이 들었습니다.
그렇습니다, 창가 방이 비교적 비어 있다는 것을 알아차렸기 때문입니다. 한여름 창가는 더울 것이 뻔합니다! 기온 변화의 영향도 있을 것 같습니다! 그래서 선택지에서 제외했습니다.
필자가 고른 포인트는 아래와 같습니다.
정사각형 방보다 직사각형 방(큰 작품을 놓을 확률이 올라가기 때문) ※같은 요금이라도 사이즈가 미묘하게 다릅니다.
기온 변화를 받기 쉬운 창가는 피할 것(여름 등, 창가로부터의 열이 실내에 정체될 우려)
고층보다 저층(기온의 영향을 받기 어렵다)
공조가 잘 미치는 존(송풍기 근처를 선택)
엘리베이터에서 가까운 곳(짐의 반출입이 편함)
공기가 순환하는 장소(송풍기 영향이 잘 미치는 곳)를 의식하도록 했습니다.
대차는 무료 대여 가능합니다. 필자 견학지에는 전 관 3대의 대차가 마련되어 있었습니다.
계약
0.5조(10,300엔), 0.8조(13,700엔), 1조(15,800엔)라는 세 가지로 좁혀 모두 둘러본 결과, 0.8조를 계약하기로 했습니다! ※모두 세금 별도 요금. 5개월간 30% 할인 캠페인도 붙었습니다.

필자의 경우, 가장 큰 결정타는 가격과 자택에서의 접근성이었습니다.
컬렉션 작품은 계속 늘어나고, 전시 교체 등으로 물품 교체도 발생합니다.
활용 방법
트렁크룸을 빌려 작품과 빈 상자를 채워 넣으면 끝, 이라는 이야기가 아닙니다.
주어진 공간을 유효 활용하는 것이 포인트입니다.
아래 사진은 필자가 일단 채워 넣은 트렁크 내부 상황입니다.
일단 1차분을 채워 넣은 잡다한 상태입니다.
보시는 대로, 상자를 직접 넣는 방식이라 아무래도 공간 상부에 여유가 생깁니다.
앞서 언급한 선반을 빌리는 것도 좋겠지만, 매월 1,000엔의 비용이 듭니다.
장기적으로 보면 저렴한 선반을 사서 트렁크 안에 넣는 편이 좋다고 생각해, 현재 찾고 있는 중입니다.
트렁크 안은 생물 등 일부 금지품을 제외하고는 무엇을 넣어도 OK이므로, 현명한 수납 방법을 계속 찾아 나가고 싶습니다.
보험은?
큐라즈를 계약하면, 자동으로 보험에 가입되는 형태입니다(큐라즈 측 부담).
만일의 경우에 적용됩니다만, 도난 등의 사고는 지금까지 들어본 적이 없다(담당자)고 합니다.
보안이 확실하기에 불안은 느껴지지 않지만, 보상이 있으면 안심이 됩니다.
보상액은 방의 사이즈에 따라 달라집니다.
BOX: 20만 엔
~0.8조: 40만 엔
1~1.6조: 60만 엔
2~3.3조: 80만 엔
4~6.5조: 100만 엔
8조~: 120만 엔
※상기 한도액은 어느 것이든 1사고, 1실당 한도액입니다.
정리
트렁크룸을 계약함으로써 실내 정리가 단숨에 진전되었습니다.
왜 좀 더 일찍 부탁하지 않았을까…? 라는 생각이 들 만큼 쾌적한 공간으로 바뀌었습니다.
그럼에도 매월 15,000엔의 고정비가 든다는 것은 연간 18만 엔의 지출이 됩니다. ※0.8조 계약의 경우
18만 엔이라 하면 꽤 큰 금액입니다. 어느 정도의 아트 작품을 구입할 수 있는 금액이지요.
쾌적한 실내에서 아트 작품이 있는 일상을 보내는 것의 장점은 크다고 봅니다.
