I visited Ai Makita’s solo exhibition “Artifact.” The venue was the Art Salon on the 6th floor of the main building of Nihombashi Mitsukoshi.
Ai Makita “Artifact”
Ai Makita is a visual artist based in Tokyo and New York. Although her schedule was significantly altered by the COVID-19 pandemic, this solo exhibition was successfully held, albeit for only a short run of six days.
Installation view
Centered on new works, the exhibition featured paintings that, as in her previous works, take artificial objects such as metals and plastics as motifs, evoking imagery reminiscent of human organs or living creatures.
This was her first solo exhibition in Japan in some time, and it drew considerable attention.
It seems that a solo exhibition at the adjacent contemporary gallery has already been scheduled for about a year and a half from now.
