We visited Toru Ishii’s solo exhibition “Collage and Staining.”

COURTYARD HIROO is a clean, airy space anchored by white walls, and its quiet setting made it possible to take in the art at a leisurely pace.

As the title suggests, this exhibition features works produced through the interplay of collage and the staining technique (bleeding).
On view were works drawing on imagery from the American magazine “TIME,” rendered by Toru Ishii using the traditional Japanese technique of itome-yuzen dyeing. Every piece is titled “Mapping,” reflecting the artist’s intent to map contemporary society in sculptural and iconographic terms.

Alongside the show, art collector Hiroshi Kamei (@ishitsubute) offered his audio-guide project “KIITEMIRU” free of charge.

전시 풍경
전시 제목 그대로, 이번 전시는 콜라주 기법과 스테이닝(번짐) 기법을 자유롭게 구사하며 제작된 작품들입니다.
미국 잡지 “TIME”에서 인용한 작품이 전시되어 있었는데, Toru Ishii는 이를 일본 전통 기법인 “이토메 유젠(itome-yuzen)”으로 표현하고 있습니다. 제목은 모두 “Mapping”으로 통일되어 있으며, 현대 사회를 조각적, 도상적으로 매핑한다는 의도가 담겨 있습니다.
