Classic × Modern 2020: Japanese Art Transcending Time
In 2020, as international attention turns to Tokyo, “Classic × Modern 2020: Japanese Art Transcending Time” will open at The National Art Center, Tokyo.
Through the juxtaposition of pre-modern and contemporary art, the exhibition explores the rich soil of Japanese art and shares its charm from a fresh perspective.
“Classic × Modern 2020” The National Art Center, Tokyo
The exhibition pairs masterworks of paintings, Buddhist statues, ceramics, and swords from before the Edo period with pieces by eight contemporary artists, organizing each pair in one of eight galleries.
On the classical side are works by masters known to all such as Soga Shohaku, Ogata Kenzan, Enku, Sengai Gibon, and Katsushika Hokusai, alongside a Kamakura-era Buddhist statue, Edo-period bird-and-flower paintings, and celebrated swords.
On the contemporary side, leading creators representing today’s Japan have been selected: Rinko Kawauchi, Tomoko Konoike, Shiriagari Kotobuki, Kishio Suga, Koji Tanada, Tsuyoshi Tane, Akira Minagawa, and Tadanori Yokoo.

The relationships between the contemporary artists’ work and the historic masterpieces vary widely.
The exhibition highlights not only affinities in worldview, subject matter, form, and technique, but also inspirations drawn from predecessors, parodies rooted in universally known images, and installations that incorporate older works — spotlighting how today’s artists actively engage with the great achievements of the past.
Through the comparison of today’s outstanding expression with the enduring appeal of classical masterworks, visitors will have the chance to discover new charms that neither could reveal alone.

본 전시는 옛 시대의 미술과 현대미술의 대비를 통해 일본미술의 풍요로운 토양을 탐구하고, 그 매력을 새로운 시점에서 발신하는 전시입니다.

전시는 에도시대 이전의 회화와 불상, 도예와 도검의 명품을 현대를 사는 8인 작가의 작품과 짝지어 조합, 하나씩 8개의 전시실로 구성됩니다.
고전 측은 Soga Shohaku, Ogata Kenzan, Enku, Sengai Gibon, Katsushika Hokusai 등 누구나 아는 거장들의 작품과 가마쿠라 시대의 불상, 에도시대의 화조화, 도검 명품을 선정.

현대 작가들의 작업과 과거 명품과의 관계는 다양합니다.
전시에서는 세계관과 주제, 조형, 제작 방법의 유사성을 보여줄 뿐 아니라, 선배들로부터 받은 영감이나 누구나 아는 이미지를 바탕으로 한 패러디, 옛 작품을 끌어들인 인스톨레이션 등, 과거의 위업에 적극적으로 관여해가는 현대 작가들의 모습에도 초점을 맞춥니다.
오늘날의 뛰어난 표현과 여전히 우리를 사로잡아 마지않는 옛 명품의 비교를 통해, 각각으로는 보이지 않는 새로운 매력을 발견하는 기회가 될 것입니다.
