Ascending Art Annual Vol.3 “Singing Life, Swelling Heart”
I visited “Ascending Art Annual,” a series held at Spiral Garden that showcases primarily young women artists.
“Ascending” carries the meaning of rising, and the exhibition series was conceived to broadcast, through art, the “spiralling, ascending image” embodied by Spiral’s architecture.
Organized by Wacoal Corporation, its aim is to contribute to elevating the sensibility of women living today toward beauty, thereby working toward the realization of a “company that empathizes with women.”
This edition features three artists: Maki Ohkojima, Yurie Kawagoe, and Yuriko Sasaoka.
Maki Ohkojima
Maki Ohkojima presents four whale-motif pieces first developed as a large-scale installation for her solo show “The Whale’s Eye” at the Aquarium de Paris in France, plus one new work.
Focusing on the “whale-fall ecosystem” — the ecosystem formed when a dead whale’s body sinks to the deep sea and is consumed by other creatures — she dynamically depicts the cycle of life and the flux of all things using materials such as acrylic, crayon, and spray paint, along with plastic and fishermen’s nets found on the shore of Awashima in the Seto Inland Sea.
The scale of the whale works, drifting in an atrium roughly 15 meters in diameter, is dynamic.
Yurie Kawagoe
Eighteen recent works were on display, including her signature piece “Weakling Specimens” (2013), shown at the 7th edition of “Aperto,” the solo-format exhibition series organized by the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, and “Specimens of Jealousy” (2015), in which insects with red bumps signifying jealousy sit lined up on their backs.
She reframes the human feelings of jealousy, loneliness, and weakness — negative emotions at first glance — into the fantastical forms of insects, arraying them as specimens and thereby placing them in relative view.
Human emotions mimicking the specimens of insects appear unreal at first glance, yet the red bumps gradually began to prick at the eye. If something appears when the emotions writhing in the human heart take on visible form — that thought stirred me.
Yuriko Sasaoka
On show is the video installation “Gyro,” which won the Grand Prize at “Kyoto Art for Tomorrow 2019 — Kyoto Prefecture Rising Artists Selection.”
Sasaoka speaks of how we Japanese, though repeatedly struck by natural disasters severe enough to be called “the devil’s doing,” have still deeply loved and forgiven nature. This work centers on the keyword “forgive,” depicting a lavishly colored world with devils from various religions as its motif.
Ascending Art Annual Vol.3 “노래하는 생명, 물결치는 마음”
Spiral Garden에서 개최되는, 젊은 여성 아티스트를 중심으로 소개하는 기획 “Ascending Art Annual”을 방문했습니다.
“Ascending”이란 “상승”이라는 의미로, Spiral의 건축 공간이 지닌 “나선형으로 상승해 가는 이미지”를 아트로 발신해 나가는 전시 시리즈입니다.
Wacoal Corporation이 주최하며, 현대를 살아가는 여성의 아름다움에 대한 감성 향상에 기여하고, “여성 공감 기업”의 실현으로 이어 나가는 것이 목적입니다.
이번 전시에는 Maki Ohkojima, Yurie Kawagoe, Yuriko Sasaoka 세 명의 아티스트가 참여합니다.
Maki Ohkojima
Maki Ohkojima는 프랑스 Aquarium de Paris의 개인전 “고래의 눈”에서 대규모 인스톨레이션으로 전개한, 고래를 모티브로 한 4점의 작품에 최신작 1점을 더한 전시를 선보입니다.
사망한 고래의 몸이 심해로 가라앉아 생물에 의해 먹힘으로써 형성되는 생태계 “고래 낙하 생물군”에 주목하여, 아크릴이나 크레용, 스프레이 컬러 등의 화재(畵材)와, 세토내해의 아와시마 해변에서 주운 플라스틱과 어부의 그물 등 인공물을 사용해, 생명의 순환과 만물유전의 양상을 다이내믹하게 그려내고 있습니다.
직경 약 15m의 아트리움 공간에 떠도는 고래 작품의 스케일은 다이내믹합니다.
Yurie Kawagoe
21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa 주최의 개인전 형식 전시 시리즈 “Aperto” 제7회전에 출품된 대표작 “겁쟁이 표본”(2013)과, 등에 질투심을 나타내는 붉은 알갱이들을 지닌 벌레들이 늘어선 “질투심의 표본”(2015)을 포함해, 최근작 18점이 전시되어 있었습니다.
인간의 질투심이나 외로움, 나약함처럼 언뜻 보면 부정적인 감정을 환상성 넘치는 벌레의 모습으로 치환하고, 표본으로 나열하여 상대화하고 있습니다.
인간의 감정이 곤충 표본으로 의태(擬態)해 있는 모습은 한눈에는 비현실적이지만, 붉은 알갱이 같은 것이 서서히 시각을 자극해 오는 느낌이 있었습니다. 인간의 마음속에 꿈틀거리는 감정이 형태를 드러냈을 때에 나타나는 무언가가 있다면… 그러한 생각에 마음이 흔들립니다.
Yuriko Sasaoka
“Kyoto Art for Tomorrow 2019 — 교토부 신예 선발전”에서 최우수상을 수상한 비디오 인스톨레이션 “Gyro”를 전시합니다.
우리 일본인은 “악마의 소행”이라 부를 만큼 심대한 피해를 초래하는 수많은 자연재해에 시달리면서도, 자연을 깊이 사랑하고 용서해 왔다고 Sasaoka는 말합니다. 본작은 “용서”를 키워드로, 여러 종교의 악마를 모티브로 한 극채색의 세계를 그려내고 있습니다.
