Yuichi Hirako “Commissioned Portraits & New Works”
I’ve had my eye on the artist Yuichi Hirako for some time, and had long been interested in adding his work to my collection.
I had been in touch with his representing gallery, WAITINGROOM, and as it happened they had a solo exhibition coming up, so I was granted the opportunity to visit.
This particular exhibition was a special event.
Commissioned portraits requested by a collector with a close relationship to the artist had been completed, and rather than simply have the finished works go straight into private storage, the plan was to first show them to the public.

For a collector, having a favorite artist paint your portrait is a genuine joy.
From what I hear, it’s also an honor for the artist. As expected, the portrait Yuichi Hirako had painted was of a “plant.”

Six new works were also on display, all of them painted since the start of 2019.
For 2019, solo exhibitions are already scheduled in Seoul, Korea and Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and there’s talk of a solo show in Japan as well — he appears to be moving forward with exhibitions at a vigorous pace. He gives the impression of an artist who works relatively quickly.

Personally, this “Plant Human” series remains my favorite.
The works, themed on the coexistence of human beings and plants, carry a narrative quality that seems to invite us into a world of imagination (this one was already sold).

The gallery had set out a table and chairs — not part of its usual furniture — and I was able to see dessin and drawing works from earlier periods. A properly filed portfolio was also prepared, giving me a chance to fully immerse myself in the Hirako world.

Being invitation-only, I had precious time inside the gallery with the gallerist, Ashikawa-san, giving me a careful walk-through — just for me. It was a luxurious and comfortable space.
It was a truly moving experience — a special and wonderful solo show.

소속 갤러리인 WAITINGROOM에 문의를 하던 중, 마침 개인전이 예정되어 있다는 이야기에 방문할 기회를 얻었습니다.
이번 전시 기획은 특별한 이벤트였습니다.
작가와 관계가 깊은 컬렉터로부터 의뢰받은 커미션 제작(의뢰 작품) 초상화가 완성되었고, 이왕 완성된 작품이니 그대로 소장하지 않고 여러분께 선보이자는 취지로 진행된 기획입니다.

좋아하는 작가에게 초상화를 그려 받는 것은 컬렉터로서 정말 기쁜 일입니다.
듣기로 작가에게도 명예로운 일이라고 합니다. Yuichi Hirako가 그리는 초상화는 예상대로 “식물”이었습니다.

신작도 6점 전시되어 있었는데 모두 2019년에 접어들어 그려진 작품입니다.
2019년에는 한국 서울, 네덜란드 로테르담 등에서 이미 개인전이 예정되어 있습니다. 국내에서도 개인전 개최에 대한 소문이 있어, 정력적으로 전시를 진행하고 있는 듯합니다. 작품 제작 속도가 비교적 빠른 작가라는 인상입니다.

필자는 역시 이 “식물 인간” 시리즈가 가장 좋아하는 시리즈입니다.
인간과 식물의 공생을 주제로 한 작품은 서사성을 품고 있어, 우리를 공상의 세계로 이끌어 주는 듯합니다(이미 판매 완료였습니다).

갤러리에는 평소에는 두지 않는 테이블과 의자가 놓여 있어, 과거의 데생 작품과 드로잉 작품 등을 볼 수 있었습니다. 잘 정리된 포트폴리오도 준비되어 있어, Hirako 월드를 만끽할 수 있었습니다.

초대제였기 때문에 갤러리 안에는 저 혼자였으며, 갤러리스트 Ashikawa(아시카와) 씨가 정성껏 설명을 해 주시는 귀중한 시간을 가졌습니다. 사치스럽고도 편안한 공간이었습니다.
