We visited “Tokyo Independent 2019,” held at the Chinretsukan Gallery of Tokyo University of the Arts. Over 630 participating artists and more than 1,000 works gathered for this large-scale project. So many works overflowed inside the Chinretsukan Gallery that the situation became unmanageable, and the opening date was pushed back by five days. *A numbered list of participating artists is included at the end of this article.
The University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts — Chinretsukan Gallery hosted more works than the writer has ever seen in one place.
What is “Tokyo Independent”…?
Tokyo Independent is an open-submission art exhibition.
No social distinctions — age, nationality, ethnicity, cultural beliefs, gender or sexual orientation — are taken into account, and no prior art-school training is required. Anyone with the will to be an artist is eligible to submit.
1st Floor
Before entering the floor, visitors leave their belongings at reception. Bringing bags in would risk brushing against the works.

The works are unjuried. It’s an unjuried, unruly exhibition space.
The meaning of the worn-out plastic bottle is a mystery…Mushrooms that were visibly growing, too…Someone else’s underwear?
There were also a few works I recognized right away as being by so-and-so.

2nd Floor

With this many works (over 1,000), it may be impossible to properly view them all. Only after the visit, checking the numbered list of participating artists, did I realize a number of familiar names were among them.

The University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts — Chinretsukan Gallery에는 필자가 지금껏 본 적이 없는 수의 작품이 모였습니다.
“Tokyo Independent”란……?
Tokyo Independent는 자유 출품 형식의 미술전입니다.
연령, 국적, 민족, 문화·신조, 젠더 및 성적 지향 등 어떠한 사회적 구분도, 미술 교육을 받은 경험의 유무도 묻지 않습니다. 예술가로서의 의지가 있는 모든 이에게 출품 자격이 주어집니다.
1층 플로어
플로어에 들어가기 전에 접수처에서 짐을 맡깁니다. 짐을 든 채로 입장하면 작품에 닿아버릴 것 같습니다.
1층 플로어의 전시 풍경번호는 선착순으로 주어지지만, 전시 장소는 각자의 임의로 정합니다.벽면에는 빈틈없이 빽빽하게 걸려 있습니다.
작품은 무심사입니다. 무심사, 무질서한 전시 공간입니다.
낡은 페트병의 의미는 잘 모르겠지만……눈에 띄게 성장 중인 버섯이라든가……다른 사람의 팬티?
“이건 그분의 작품이다!” 하고 바로 알아차린 작품도 몇 점 있었습니다.

2층 플로어
2층 플로어 입구AHO전에서도 봤던 JART ≪끊임없이 날치기당하는 가방≫2층 플로어는 아트리움 천장 위쪽까지 작품이 전시되어 있었습니다Emi Makita의 작품, 분사의 방향이 새 연호를 향하고 있는 듯한……Yuki Koyano의 작품. 나선 시리즈가 아닌 보기 드문 작품.이 조각 작품이 가장 큰 사이즈였을까요.Eboshi Yuasa의 작품눈길이 가는 작품도 몇 점 있었지만, 번호가 붙어 있지 않아 누구의 작품인지 알 수 없었습니다.Kotao Kotori, 예술제 전시 당시 임팩트가 있어 기억하고 있었습니다.전시 풍경
이 정도의 작품 수(1,000점 이상)라면, 모든 작품을 제대로 감상하기는 어려울지도 모릅니다. 관람 후에 출품 작가 번호 명단을 보고서야, 익숙한 작가들이 여럿 있었다는 사실을 알아차렸습니다.
