Continuing from the previous article, this is Chapter 2.
The article is structured to include many photographs of the exhibited works so the atmosphere of the art fair comes through.
Art Basel in Hong Kong
Staff scanned the barcode on my issued card, I passed through the gate, and I was inside Art Basel Hong Kong.
The entrance is on the 3rd floor, so that’s where the visit begins.
The floor is vast, and the fair spans a total of two floors — the 3rd floor plus the 1st floor.
Right past the entrance was a work by Leiko Ikemura, credited with a mysterious kanji rendering of her name — “池村礼子” — that I had never seen before. It was my first time seeing Leiko Ikemura’s name written in kanji.

The work takes up one of Leiko Ikemura’s key themes, “horizon,” and would not look out of place in a museum exhibition.
At 50 cm × 70 cm, the price was a stunning “US$32,000,” and multiple pieces had already been sold.
As I’ll describe later, the prices at Basel Hong Kong are big — just as big as the event itself.

While the touring Leiko Ikemura exhibition — which will also travel to Switzerland — is underway, encountering an unframed, bare work right in front of me was moving.
This masterpiece-tier work by Leiko Ikemura is one I hadn’t even seen at her Japanese-representing gallery “ShugoArts.” It was exhibited by Galerie Karsten Greve.
The first Leiko Ikemura work I encountered felt emblematic of Art Basel Hong Kong.
That is to say: this is a place where artists and works positioned right at the center of the current art scene circulate unreservedly.
Art Basel Hong Kong — S-Class Works
For S-class artists whose prices you can’t even ask about, let’s just say it’s bliss and fun enough simply to look.

Art Basel Hong Kong is a festival of contemporary art, and the sheer scale of the works by currently active artists is overwhelming.

Art Basel Hong Kong — Japanese Galleries and Artists
Japanese galleries and artists were putting up a strong showing too.
Quite a few galleries are competing here without even bothering with Art Fair Tokyo.
Standing in this venue, that strategy makes perfect sense. Look around at the visitors and you see the wealthy, celebrities, ladies and gentlemen in abundance.

VIP Area
The “Collectors Lounge” is a space accessible only to VIP ticket holders.
The crowding of the main venue eases here a little, and sofas are provided to rest your feet.
VIP entrants get preferential treatment throughout — including dedicated venue entrances and exits.Soft drinks and alcohol are sold at a charge.
Characteristics of Art Basel Hong Kong
The Art Basel Hong Kong venue spans two floors. It’s just about walkable in a single day, but with the crowds and the sheer volume of works on view, the fatigue is no joke. I’d recommend a two-day schedule so you can view at a relaxed pace.
Based on my first-time visit to Art Basel Hong Kong, I’ve summarized below the “characteristics of Art Basel Hong Kong” that set it apart from Art Fair Tokyo (personal impressions included).
*I went on Friday afternoon — the first day the general public could enter.
The venue is absolutely huge! *Be mindful of the walking distance
Visitors are highly international *It’s an Asian fair, but there were also many Western and Arab visitors
You spot celebrities and wealthy guests *Easy to identify by appearance
High proportion of women in their 20s (uniformly taking photos on their phones, including selfies)
Photography of everything in the venue is OK! *Way more smartphones than digital cameras
Universal captions across all galleries, crossing gallery boundaries *Easy to read
Captions do not display prices *Common rule
Gallery booths are spacious and generously designed *Felt less crowded than Art Fair Tokyo
Lavish exhibition works including S-class artists *Though the prices are top-tier as well
Work prices are also S-class — very high indeed!

不少画廊完全放弃 Art Fair Tokyo，直接投身这里一决胜负。
站在这里就会明白，那是完全可以理解的战略。放眼来场者，富豪、名流、绅士淑女比比皆是。

발급된 카드의 바코드를 스태프가 스캔한 뒤 게이트를 통과해 Art Basel Hong Kong에 입장했습니다.
입장구는 3층 플로어에 있으므로, 그곳에서부터 둘러보게 됩니다.
플로어는 넓고, 3층에 더해 1층 플로어를 포함해 총 “2개 층”에 걸쳐 전개됩니다.
입장하자마자 있던 자리에는, 지금껏 본 적 없는 “池村礼子”라는 한자 표기로 수수께끼처럼 크레딧된 Leiko Ikemura의 작품이 전시되어 있었습니다. Leiko Ikemura의 이름을 한자로 표기한 것을 본 것은 이번이 처음이었습니다.

미술관에 걸려도 이상하지 않을 Leiko Ikemura의 중요 테마 “지평선”을 모티프로 한 작품입니다.
50cm × 70cm 크기에 가격은 놀랍게도 “32,000 미국 달러”, 게다가 이미 여러 점이 판매 완료되어 있었습니다.
뒤에서도 언급하겠지만, Basel Hong Kong의 작품 가격은 이벤트 규모만큼이나 크다는 것입니다.
Leiko Ikemura《Appearing》2018년
스위스에도 순회 예정인 Leiko Ikemura 전이 진행 중인 시점에, 액자에도 들어 있지 않은 맨 작품이 눈앞에 있다는 감동.
게다가, 일본에서의 취급 화랑인 “ShugoArts”에서도 본 적 없는, Leiko Ikemura의 마스터피스급 작품이었습니다. 본 작품은 Galerie Karsten Greve에서 출품되었습니다.
처음 본 Leiko Ikemura의 작품은 Art Basel Hong Kong을 상징적으로 보여 주는 듯 느껴졌습니다.
즉, 현재 주목받고 있는 아트 신의 정중앙에 위치한 작가와 작품이, 아낌없이 유통되는 장소라는 것입니다.

가격을 물어볼 수도 없는 S급 작가의 작품은, 보는 것만으로도 지복이며 즐거운, 그것으로 충분합니다.

일본의 갤러리와 작가들도 열심히 하고 있었습니다.
Art Fair Tokyo는 쳐다보지도 않고 이곳에서 승부하는 갤러리도 적지 않습니다.
이 장소에 서 보면 그것은 지극히 납득이 가는 전략입니다. 방문객을 보면 부호와 셀럽, 신사 숙녀들이 즐비합니다.

Art Basel Hong Kong의 특징
Art Basel Hong Kong의 회장은 2개 층. 하루에 돌아볼 수 있는 규모이기는 하지만, 인파가 많고 전시 볼륨도 압도적이어서 피로가 이만저만이 아닙니다. 이틀 동안 여유롭게 감상하는 일정을 추천합니다.
Art Basel Hong Kong에 처음 참가하며 느낀 Art Fair Tokyo와 다른 “Art Basel Hong Kong의 특징”에 대해, 아래에 정리해 보았습니다(개인적 감상 포함).
