One Hundred Stories Like a Mountain
“One Hundred Stories Like a Mountain,” held on the Tohoku University of Art & Design campus, was a project that trained the spotlight — as art — on aspects of Yamagata that have rarely been thought of as its defining character.
What do you think “Yamagata-ness” is? “One Hundred Stories Like a Mountain” is an exhibition that focuses on aspects of Yamagata that have long gone unnoticed as part of its character, and that intermingles folkloric and museum materials with artworks born from Tohoku University of Art & Design. The truths that researchers have uncovered from deep beneath the landscape, and the “stories like a mountain” that the inspired artists then reached for, unfold together to build a space that explores a “new way of seeing Yamagata.” The university grounds are divided into five zones — “Laboratory,” “Incubation,” “Contemporary,” “Collaboration,” and “Arts & Crafts” — with 100 works scattered across them. The “One Hundred Stories Like a Mountain” guidebook was directed by Natsunosuke Mise, and its consistent illustration style throughout gave it a stylish look. It was distributed free of charge, but the planned run had already been exhausted by the final day.

Across the university grounds, divided into 5 zones — “Laboratory,” “Incubation,” “Contemporary,” “Collaboration,” and “Arts & Crafts” — 100 works were installed, and even accounting for the many participating artists it is remarkable that they managed to gather that many. It really is a mountain of a display.“Contemporary Yamagata Considered: Is Restoration Possible? — Region, Locality, Japan” questioned what it means to restore old artworks. By juxtaposing antique artworks connected to Yamagata with contemporary art, the exhibition raised a variety of thoughts on restoration.“One Hundred Stories Like a Mountain” is a project in which each work is divided into its own small, specific theme, but as I moved through them all — carried by the flow of time and the surrounding natural setting — I found myself accepting the project as a whole with an open heart, and it became a straightforwardly comfortable, refreshing experience of art appreciation.

Tohoku University of Art & Design 캠퍼스에서 개최된 “산과 같은 100 이야기”는, 그동안 야마가타다움으로 별로 의식되지 않아 온 부분에 초점을 맞추어 아트로서 표현하는 기획입니다.

“산과 같은 100 이야기” 가이드북은 Natsunosuke Mise 씨의 디렉션으로 제작되었으며, 통일된 삽화 디자인이 세련되었습니다. 무료 배포되었지만 마지막 날에는 예정된 부수가 이미 소진되어 있었습니다.
소책자에는 100개의 아트 작품 해설이 일러스트와 함께 실려 있습니다 (PDF 파일은 여기)
“래버러토리”, “인큐베이션”, “컨템퍼러리”, “콜라보레이션”, “아츠&크래프츠”의 5개 존으로 나뉜 대학 부지 내에 100점의 작품이 전시되었는데, 여러 아티스트가 참여했다고는 해도 무려 100점의 아트 작품을 이만큼 모아냈다는 사실이 새삼 대단하게 느껴집니다. 그야말로 산과 같은 전시 규모입니다.“현대 야마가타 고찰: 복원은 가능한가? — 지역・지방・일본”은 오래된 미술품을 복원하는 것에 대한 물음을 던지는 내용이었습니다. 야마가타와 인연이 있는 옛 미술품을 현대 미술과 겹쳐 보여주는 전시 방식으로, 복원에 관한 다양한 사유를 제기하고 있었습니다.“산과 같은 100 이야기”는 하나하나의 전시 작품이 각기 고유한 작은 주제로 나뉜 기획이지만, 그 모두를 관람해 가는 시간의 흐름과 주변 자연환경 속에서, 기획 전체를 있는 그대로 받아들이는 저 자신이 있어, 곧고 편안하며 상쾌한 아트 감상 체험이 되었습니다.

校舎の前から見る景色は遠くの山々や田園風景などが広がり、絶景です。
「ラボラトリー」「インキュベーション」「コンテンポラリー」「コラボレーション」「アーツ&クラフツ」の5ゾーンに分けられた大学敷地内に100の作品が展示されましたが、複数のアーティストが参加したとは言え、よくぞ100ものアート作品を集めたと思います。まさに山のような展示数です。
「現代山形考 修復は可能か？ー地域・地方・日本ー」では、古き美術品を修復することについて問いかける内容でした。山形にゆかりのある古き美術品を現代の美術と重ね合わせている展示方法によって、修復に関する様々な思考を提起していました。
「山のような100ものがたり」は、ひとつひとつの展示作品が固有の小さなテーマに分かれている企画ですが、全てを鑑賞していく時間の流れや周辺の自然環境の中で、企画全体を素直に受容する自分がいて、真っ直ぐに心地良く、爽やかなアートの鑑賞体験となりました。
