I’ve been receiving private photography lessons from a professional photographer.
I want to know more about cameras, improve my shooting skills, record artists’ works as close to the real thing as possible, and deliver them to everyone.
Amid that, a shooting item my teacher taught me is absolutely superb! So, I’d like to report on it while introducing the images I actually shot.
PL Filter
What I’m introducing this time is a shooting item called the “PL filter”. It’s a polarizing filter that screws onto the tip of a camera lens.
The PL filter is generally essential for landscape photography, where it renders colors vividly. It’s an excellent tool that mainly delivers two effects.
The first is removing surface reflections of light on water, glass, and the like—“reflection removal.” This article describes that.
The second is the effect of “color contrast,” deepening blue skies and making the colors of foliage, mountain surfaces, buildings, and so on vivid (I’ll write about that in a later article).
Kenko’s PL filter “Zeta EX” Circular PL
The product I purchased this time is a thin filter compatible with the wide-angle camera I use, Kenko’s PL filter “Zeta EX” Circular PL. Many filters are sold by various makers, so it’s good to choose the one that fits you based on your preferred brand, price, and so on.
The state upon opening. The case is a plastic case as you can see—not exactly stylish in shape or design. It’s fine for storage.
“Circular” means the filter part can be manually rotated round and round, “allowing adjustment to the appropriate position”—a filter with a wonderful structure. Of course, there are also ordinary PL filters without this function. It’s good to choose according to your purpose.
My camera’s diameter was 49mm. The size varies by camera type. As the diameter gets larger, the price rises too.
Actually Trying to Shoot
To gauge the filter’s effect, I shot the difference from the no-filter state with the camera fixed on a tripod (indoor use). The work used for shooting is Yukimasa Ida’s “end of today,” box-framed (purchased at the Gallery Naüf Gendai solo exhibition). Now let’s attach the PL filter introduced this time and shoot.
When using an ordinary protective filter—as you can see, the reflection is strong, covering the whole work.
The shooting settings are all under identical conditions. (Camera used: Leica Q, 28mm, ISO800, f4.0, 1/50 sec.) Of course, no image processing was done at all.
When the Circular PL is attached—you can immediately confirm the effect.
The Circular PL filter delivered its effect right away, but there’s still strong reflection, so I adjust while checking the reflection through the viewfinder.
A shot mid-adjustment—as you rotate the filter round and round, the reflected light weakens.
Could you tell the difference? For easy comparison, please view the slide-style image comparison (try sliding the pointer in the center).
What do you think? Quite an effect, right! I further adjusted the filter to find the best position.
This is the best position! What do you think? The reflection was greatly eliminated. I feel the PL filter’s other effect, “color contrast,” is coming through too.

I never thought a single filter could make this much difference. Shooting at museums and galleries looks set to become even more enjoyable. I recommend it to everyone!

이번에 소개하는 것은 「PL 필터」라는 촬영 아이템입니다. 카메라 렌즈 끝에 나사식으로 장착하는 편광 필터입니다.
일반적으로 PL 필터는 색채를 선명하게 표현하는 풍경 촬영에 필수품. 주로 두 가지 효과를 발휘하는 뛰어난 물건입니다.
첫 번째 효과는 수면이나 유리 등 빛의 표면 반사를 제거하는 「반사 제거」. 본 기사는 이에 대해 기술합니다.
두 번째는 파란 하늘을 짙게 하고 나뭇잎·산 표면·건물 등의 색채를 선명하게 하는 「색채 콘트라스트」 효과입니다(이에 대해서는 추후 기사화합니다).
Kenko사의 PL 필터 「Zeta EX」 서큘러 PL
이번에 구입한 제품은 필자가 사용하는 광각 카메라와 궁합이 좋은 박형 필터 Kenko사의 PL 필터 「Zeta EX」 서큘러 PL입니다. 각 메이커에서 많은 필터가 발매되고 있으니, 좋아하는 브랜드나 가격 등으로 자신에게 맞는 제품을 고르면 좋겠지요.
개봉 시의 상태. 케이스는 보시는 대로 플라스틱 케이스로 세련됐다고는 할 수 없는 형상·디자인입니다. 보관에는 OK.
서큘러란, 필터 부분을 손으로 빙글빙글 회전시킬 수 있어 「적절한 포지션으로 조정할 수 있는」 훌륭한 구조를 지닌 필터입니다. 물론 이 기능이 없는 일반 PL 필터도 있습니다. 목적에 따라 선택하면 좋겠지요.
필자 카메라의 구경은 49mm였습니다. 카메라 종류에 따라 사이즈가 달라집니다. 구경이 커지면 가격도 상승합니다.
실제로 촬영해 보았다
필터의 효과를 측정하기 위해, 필터 없는 상태와의 차이를 삼각대에 고정해 촬영해 보았습니다(실내 사용). 촬영에 사용한 작품은 이다 유키마사의 작품 「end of today」로 상자형 액자입니다(갤러리 나우프 현대 개인전 때 구입). 그러면 이번에 도입한 PL 필터를 장착하고 촬영해 봅시다.
일반 보호 필터 사용 시~보시는 대로 반사가 강해 작품 전체를 덮듯 비침이 있습니다.
촬영 시 설정은 모두 동일 조건으로 하고 있습니다.(사용 카메라: 라이카 Q 28mm ISO800 f4.0 1/50초). 물론 이미지 가공은 일절 하지 않았습니다.
서큘러 PL 장착 시~곧바로 효과를 확인할 수 있는 상태입니다.
서큘러 PL 필터는 곧바로 효과를 발휘해 주었지만, 이것으로도 비침이 강한 상태이므로 파인더로 비침 상태를 확인하며 조정해 갑니다.
조정 도중의 촬영 이미지~빙글빙글 필터를 회전시키면 반사광이 약해져 갑니다.
