Something I always do when I purchase a painting is “framing.”
I believe art collectors have a duty to protect artworks from dust, humidity, oil, and the like through framing, passing them on to the next generation.
Sometimes I fit a work snugly into a ready-made frame, but the aspect ratio, thickness, and other dimensions may not match, and it’s hard to find the color or material I picture.
At such times, I quietly place an order.
It becomes the “one and only” original frame that only I own.
Nabis Art Frames
A place I’ve relied on recently is “Nabis Art Frames,” an art-supply store that relocated from Ginza to Kuramae in October 2017. Founded in 1947, it’s a shop with over 70 years of history.
Nabis faces Kasuga-dori with good sunlight, and the interior is very bright and comfortable.
It’s a custom-frame shop, but it also stocks many ready-made frames, so there’s the fun of discovering cute frames.
The frames seem to be centered on their own in-house production plus direct imports from Italy and Spain, and there are many frames I’d never seen—it’s fun.
They Framed a Work for Me
Of the several framings I’ve requested, let me introduce a basic one. This time it’s a work by Kosuke Ajiro. I purchased it at this solo exhibition.
Bringing the work in, they check compatibility and balance by holding various frame-wood samples against it.
Matching the chosen frame, we also select the mat board.
The young man in charge responds kindly and courteously.
Nabis’s counter is really nice—it uses cork, a soft work surface that’s gentle on works.
We finished by discussing the framing method and so on. It’s a different work, but they told me the shina plywood they use can sometimes bleed (aku), so they take time to treat it—a framer who pays the utmost attention even to the finishing.
For reference, the bill came to about 7,000 yen.
Completed
Here is the completed framing. Looking at the back, you can confirm the careful work. Framers who attach back rubber are rare even among long-established shops.
It’s hard to tell in the photo, but it’s a frame with a deep, indigo-like flavorful color. The mat is milky white.
Summary
I’ve asked various framers in the past, but since Nabis is in a relatively accessible location, I’ve been relying on them a lot recently. Above all, being newly established, there’s a reassurance that they offer a wide range of options. They don’t make a single unpleasant face at my unreasonable requests—rather, they’re a framer full of professionalism who seem to enjoy them.
I’m currently asking Nabis a new favor: “Please frame a photo book.” Since it’s a photo book, it’s quite an unreasonable order requiring a “removable method.”
What kind of answer will come…?

额装
笔者购买绘画作品时必做的就是「额装」。
我认为艺术收藏家有责任通过额装保护作品免受灰尘、湿气、油污等侵害，从而将美术作品传承给下一代。
有时也会把作品恰好收进成品额框，但纵横比、厚度等尺寸不合，或想要的颜色与素材难以找到。
这种时候便二话不说地下单定制。
那是只属于自己的「独一无二」的原创额框。
ナビス画材-Nabis Art Frames-
笔者最近承蒙关照的，是2017年10月从银座迁至藏前的画材店「ナビス画材-Nabis Art Frames-」。创业于1947年，是一家有70多年历史的店。
아트 컬렉터는 액자를 통해 먼지·습기·기름 등으로부터 작품을 지키고, 미술 작품을 보호하여 다음 세대로 이어 가는 책무가 있다고 생각합니다.
기성품에 쏙 넣기도 하지만, 종횡비나 두께 등 사이즈가 맞지 않거나, 상상하는 색이나 소재는 좀처럼 찾기 어렵습니다.
그럴 때는 잠자코 주문합니다.
자신만이 가진 「단 하나」의 오리지널 액자입니다.
나비스 화재(Nabis Art Frames)
필자가 최근 신세를 지고 있는 곳이 2017년 10월 긴자에서 구라마에로 이전해 온 화재점 「나비스 화재-Nabis Art Frames-」입니다. 창업이 1947년이니 70년 이상의 역사를 지닌 가게입니다.
나비스는 가스가도리에 면해 있어 볕도 잘 들고, 점내는 무척 밝고 쾌적합니다.
주문 액자점이지만 기성 액자도 많이 놓여 있어 사랑스러운 프레임을 발견하는 즐거움도 있습니다.
액자는 자사 생산 액자를 중심으로 이탈리아·스페인에서 직수입하는 듯하여, 본 적 없는 액자도 많아 즐겁습니다.
액자를 맡겼다
몇 가지 부탁한 액자 중 베이식한 것을 소개합니다. 이번에는 아지로 고스케의 작품입니다. 구입한 것은 이 개인전이었습니다.
작품을 들고 가, 다양한 액자목 샘플을 작품에 대어 보며 궁합과 밸런스를 확인해 갑니다.
고른 액자에 맞춰 매트지도 골라 갑니다.
담당하는 분은 부드럽고 친절하게 응대해 줍니다.
나비스의 카운터 대는 무척 좋은 느낌으로, 코르크가 쓰여 작품에 부드러운 작업대입니다.
액자 방법 등을 협의하고 종료. 다른 작품이지만, 사용하는 시나 합판에서 아크(진액)가 나올 때가 있다고 하여, 처리를 위해 시간을 들이는 등 마무리에도 세심한 주의를 기울여 일해 주는 액자점입니다.
참고로 계산은 약 7,000엔 정도였습니다.
완성
완성된 액자가 이쪽입니다. 뒷면을 보면 꼼꼼한 솜씨를 확인할 수 있습니다. 뒷고무를 붙여 주는 액자점은 노포라도 좀처럼 없습니다.
사진으로는 알기 어렵지만, 짙은 쪽빛 같은 멋스러운 색의 프레임입니다. 매트는 유백색.
정리
과거 여러 액자점에 부탁해 왔지만, 비교적 접근하기 쉬운 곳에 있어 최근에는 나비스에 신세를 지는 일이 많습니다. 무엇보다 새로 생겨 폭넓은 선택지를 제공해 주는 안심감이 있습니다. 이쪽의 무리한 부탁에도 싫은 내색 하나 없이, 오히려 즐겨 주는 듯한 프로 의식 넘치는 액자점입니다.
나비스에는 현재 「사진집을 액자에 넣어 주세요」라는 새로운 상담을 부탁하고 있습니다. 사진집이라 「꺼낼 수 있는 방법」이라는 상당히 무리한 주문입니다.
