NAKED’s Culmination Solo Exhibition “Bukiyō Daifugō”
slash-quilt artist 「NAKED QUILT」 held her culmination solo exhibition “Bukiyō Daifugō,” which I visited. The venue is the Daikanyama gallery “Kaibikan.”
“NAKED QUILT” is a brand developed by Akino Kodama, an artist who handcrafts slash-quilt works.
Bukiyō Daifugō (clumsy great wealth)
Because one is somewhat clumsy, not dabbling here and there (haven’t yet, but from now on) and achieving great success (or striving to).

Slash Quilt
“Slash quilt” is a production technique characterized by the fabric texture created by layering and sewing cloth, then cutting between the stitch lines to raise a nap. It expresses complex color tones while, at the same time, the napping produces a gentle texture.
Exquisite expressions arise from the choice and combination of fabrics.
In this solo exhibition “Bukiyō Daifugō,” various kinds of works using the slash-quilt technique were displayed.
Three-dimensional work “HIT/ME/GO/COOL”
The first thing to catch your eye upon entering is the large three-dimensional work “HIT/ME/GO/COOL.” It’s a slash-quilt work created on the theme of “human sacrifice.”
A clown work made using various slash-quilt techniques part by part, expressing “complex emotions” by fully employing diverse techniques. The white paint applied all over the body is likened to “justice,” and it seems to positively interpret the complex psychology and emotional swings of a human being treated within the negative custom of human sacrifice. It appears to symbolize the worldview of the works “NAKED QUILT” creates.
Large tapestry work “NAKED”
The next work to catch your eye is the huge slash-quilt work “NAKED,” mounted across the entire wall behind “HIT/ME/GO/COOL.”
As the work’s title, bearing the brand name, suggests, it is a work full of Kodama’s feelings. It’s also a work she uses as a contest entry; with many colors leaping into view and its sense of scale, it radiated an overwhelming presence.
The good and negative sides of humans are cut out as individual pieces of fabric and given form, and by stitching them together she achieves a harmonious, beautiful color scheme as a whole. It’s a conceptual work that also seems to overlay the way humans face one another.

Akino Kodama
“NAKED” is a brand run single-handedly by Akino Kodama. She studied formative arts at university and completed her own slash-quilt style almost entirely self-taught.
Because she handcrafts each piece individually, it seems difficult to expand into online sales and the like. She mainly exhibits and sells at events repeatedly, energetically flying around the whole country. About a year and a half has passed since she began her activities, and many fans came to this solo exhibition too.
Kodama, who chats with you in a friendly way. Many “NAKED” fans came to the venue.
Summary
Slash-quilt works are never mass-produced as identical products like sewn goods or industrial products. Each is completed as a fully original work with its own distinct expression. Sometimes it seems to be led in a slightly different direction from the artist’s intention, but therein lies the great appeal of enjoying slash quilt.
The various fabric expressions peeking out from the cut edges and their soft touch feel like a strong presence that gently touches the hearts of those of us living in a digital society.

슬래시 퀼트
「슬래시 퀼트」란, 천을 겹쳐 꿰맨 뒤 재봉선 사이를 잘라 기모를 일으킴으로써 생기는 원단의 질감이 특징인 제작 기법입니다. 복잡한 색조를 표현함과 동시에, 기모를 일으켜 부드러운 질감을 자아내는 것으로도 이어집니다.
원단의 선택과 조합에 따라 절묘한 표정이 생겨납니다.
이번 개인전 「불기용대부고」에서는 슬래시 퀼트 기법을 사용한 다양한 종류의 작품이 전시되어 있었습니다.
입체 작품 「HIT/ME/GO/COOL」
회장에 들어서면 먼저 눈길을 끄는 것이 대형 입체 작품 「HIT/ME/GO/COOL」입니다. 「인신공양(人柱)」을 테마로 제작된 슬래시 퀼트 작품입니다.
부위마다 슬래시 퀼트의 다양한 기법을 사용해 제작된 광대 작품으로, 다양한 기법을 구사해 「복잡한 감정」을 표현. 전신에 칠해진 흰 페인트색은 「정의」로 비유되며, 인신공양이라는 부정적 관습 속에서 다뤄지는 인간의 복잡한 심리와 마음의 흔들림을 긍정적으로 해석하는 듯한 작품입니다. 「NAKED QUILT」가 만드는 작품의 세계관을 상징하는 것처럼 보입니다.
대형 태피스트리 작품 「NAKED」
다음으로 눈에 들어오는 작품은 「HIT/ME/GO/COOL」 후방, 벽 한 면에 걸린 거대한 슬래시 퀼트 작품 「NAKED」입니다.
브랜드명을 딴 작품 타이틀에서도 알 수 있듯, 고다마의 마음이 가득 담긴 작품입니다. 콘테스트 출품작으로도 쓴다는 작품인데, 수많은 색이 눈에 날아들어 크기감까지 더해 압도적인 존재감을 발산했습니다.
인간의 좋은 면과 부정적인 면을 하나하나 원단으로 잘라내어 형태로 만들고, 그것들을 꿰매어 전체로서 조화로운 아름다운 색조를 실현. 인간끼리의 마주함과도 겹쳐 놓은 듯한 개념적인 작품이네요.

고다마 아키노
「NAKED」는 고다마 아키노가 혼자 운영하는 브랜드입니다. 대학에서 조형예술을 배우고, 거의 독학으로 자신의 슬래시 퀼트 스타일을 완성했습니다.
하나하나 핸드메이드로 제작하는 관계상, 좀처럼 인터넷 판매 등으로 전개하기 어려운 듯합니다. 주로 이벤트에 출전해 전시 판매를 반복하는 듯, 정력적으로 전국을 누비고 계십니다. 활동을 시작한 지 약 1년 반이 지났고, 본 개인전에도 많은 팬이 찾아왔습니다.

정리
슬래시 퀼트 작품은 봉제품이나 공업품처럼 동일한 제품이 만들어지지 않습니다. 하나하나가 다른 표정을 지닌 완전한 오리지널 작품으로 완성됩니다. 때로 작가의 의도와 조금 다른 방향으로 이끌리기도 하는 듯하지만, 거기에 슬래시 퀼트를 즐기는 큰 묘미가 있습니다.
원단의 절단면에서 엿보이는 다양한 원단의 표정과 부드러운 촉감은, 디지털 사회 속에서 생활하는 우리의 마음을 부드럽게 어루만져 주는 큰 존재감을 느끼게 합니다.
