【個展】ニューヨークのスタジオが再現〜山口歴「YOUR OLD FRIEND」PARCO MUSEUM TOKYO

山口歴「YOUR OLD FRIEND」

山口歴（Meguru Yamaguchi）さんの個展「YOUR OLD FRIEND」に伺いました。会場は渋谷PARCO MUSEUM TOKYOです。

会場には、絵具が散りばめられたビニールシートを抜けて入場します。

入場すると、山口さんが制作の拠点としているニューヨークのスタジオが再現されています。
制作へのエネルギーが充満する空気を感じる、本展の重要な位置付けとなる展示空間です。

本展では、山口歴さんの代表的なブラシストロークを用いた新作7点が展示されました。

特に目を引いたのが縦2.7mx横4mという大きなサイズの新作《SPLITTING HORAIZON NO.22》です。

この大作は、ブラスストロークを用いた作品としては国内で過去最大規模の作品展示となり、鮮烈な色彩で一気に描き上げられたブラシストロークをダイナミックかつ緻密に構築した圧巻のスケールの作品です。

大きな作品ですが、レーザーカットされた板を何枚も組み合わせてひとつの作品となっています。

また、2000年初頭の大学受験の予備校時代に制作された作品を含めた初期の作品も展示されていました。

展示の最後には、交流のあるニューヨーク在住の写真家・小浪次郎の写真作品に山口歴がペイントを施すコラボレーション作品が展示されていました。

小浪氏がiPhoneで撮影した渋谷の風景写真にペインティングが施されたユニーク作品です。

なお、小浪氏とのコラボ作品は限定数にて抽選販売されました。

会期中には、本人が日本に帰国し会場壁面にアートワークを制作する試みが行われるなど、山口歴の画業の初期から現在形を俯瞰できる展覧会となっておりました。

We visited Meguru Yamaguchi’s solo exhibition “YOUR OLD FRIEND.” The venue is PARCO MUSEUM TOKYO in Shibuya.

Visitors enter the venue by passing through vinyl sheets sprayed with paint.

Once inside, a recreation of the New York studio where Yamaguchi is based unfolds before you.
This is a key part of the exhibition — a space that lets you feel the very air, charged with creative energy.

Even the scattered trash was reportedly brought over from New York.

Continuing on, the room opens into the display of new works.

The exhibition features seven new works employing Yamaguchi’s signature brushstroke motif.

Especially eye-catching is the monumental new work SPLITTING HORAIZON NO.22, measuring 2.7m tall by 4m wide.

This monumental piece is the largest-scale display of Yamaguchi’s brushstroke works ever shown domestically — a jaw-dropping-scale work in which brushstrokes, laid down in one uninhibited sweep of vivid color, are constructed with dynamic yet meticulous precision.

Though large, the work is composed of multiple laser-cut panels joined together into a single piece.

Also on view are early works, including pieces produced in the early 2000s during Yamaguchi’s college-exam prep school years.

At the end of the exhibition, collaborative works were shown in which Yamaguchi applied paint to photographs by his New York-based friend, the photographer Jiro Konami.

These are unique works in which painting has been applied over photographs of Shibuya scenery taken by Konami with his iPhone.

The collaborative works with Konami were sold in limited numbers by lottery.

During the exhibition period, Yamaguchi returned to Japan to create wall artworks on-site at the venue — an exhibition that offered a sweeping view of his practice from its earliest stages to the present.
