Dan Isomura is a young visual artist whose distinctive fashion sense is striking. Perhaps because he had the experience of staying and creating work in Thailand during his student days, he also seems to have an interest in international social issues.
Isomura Dan / Dan Isomura
Born in Tokyo in 1992, currently based in Tokyo. Graduated in 2016 from Tokyo University of the Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Painting, Oil Painting Major.
Graduated in 2017 from Genron Chaos*Lounge New Art School, 2nd Term (received the Gold Prize at graduation).
Major activities include solo exhibitions held during residency programs in London and Tokyo: “Two glasses of water / 2000000000000000000000000 water molecules” (The Vitrine, Central Saint Martins, London, 2017), “A glass of water / 1000000000000000000000000 water molecules” (Yukobo, Tokyo, 2017), and participation in the KENPOKU ART 2016 Ibaraki Prefecture Northern Arts Festival Pre-Planning “Geidai Students Art Project.” Additionally, from 2016 onwards, he has frequently hosted parties at his home, and in 2017 presented the installation “HOME PARTY#2” (Chaos*Lounge Gotanda Atelier, Tokyo, 2017), which reconstructed and reinterpreted the party “HOME PARTY#1” held with Nepalese immigrants within a gallery space.
Currently, Isomura observes the landscape of globalization’s turning point and creates installations and paintings by referencing vernacular culture and religious art of homelands of immigrants he encounters in visited locations and Japan, as well as physics and aesthetics on SNS.
Solo Exhibition “Good Neighbors”
Dan Isomura’s solo exhibition “Good Neighbors” is positioned as the most outstanding debut exhibition of the Genron Chaos Lounge New Art School, 2nd Term. This time, the exhibition was themed around “immigration,” which has garnered attention through European issues and the Trump administration.
The central display of this exhibition was an installation using water. With five colorful boxes at the center, water flowing through hoses circulates from bottom to top.
When I visited, the water was turned off, but when I asked the staff out of curiosity, it seemed the machine wasn’t functioning well and they didn’t keep the power on constantly. They switched it on for me, and I was able to view it.

Flowing water is a great force that dominates the earth we inhabit. It serves as a lubricant connecting nations, and during immigration, it becomes an important keyword as a precious migration route. I took a short video.
It appears that each box was co-produced with Asian immigrants, young people who came to Japan with dreams, and Japanese people who have spent much time abroad.

According to the staff, the work brings to mind the expression methods using boxes left by American contemporary artist Joseph Cornell, the expression methods of visual artist Tetsumi Kudo from the late Showa period, and the works of Yukinori Yanagi, famous for works where ants destroy sand paintings of international flags.
Small diorama works themed to match the exhibition’s theme were also displayed. The fluffy sculptural work is “Leakage.” It is a work that utilizes the mechanism of sealed urethane expanding and protruding from gaps. It seems to express the unpredictability and imbalance.

Many of the small works were priced at 10,000 yen (excluding tax), and many had sold markers.

Summary
Despite dealing with socially heavy themes, I felt the artist’s skill in conveying messages softly through bright and tactilely pleasant expression methods.
He may be someone with a kind heart, but I think if the younger generation promotes this kind of communication, surely the future will be a bright one.

개인전 「Good Neighbors」
