I visited the DIC Kawamura Memorial Museum of Art, which is set to close on March 31, 2025.
I arrived at the venue at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 25, 2025. Even 30 minutes before opening, the parking lot was packed and a long line had already formed.
I was surprised by such a crowd on a weekday.

The exhibition presented about 180 works from the collection across the gardens and every gallery in the museum.
Photography is prohibited throughout the interior of the DIC Kawamura Memorial Museum of Art, so all the photos I took are limited to the exterior.

The interior was spacious, and despite the crowds, I was able to view the works at a relatively relaxed pace.
Rothko Room
The Rothko Room is one of the galleries added in the 2008 extension, designed by architect Hiroshi Nemoto as a dedicated space for Mark Rothko’s Seagram Murals. Created in the late 1950s to adorn an upscale restaurant in New York, the Seagram Murals were meant to fulfill Rothko’s wish to “fill an entire room with only my works” — the first serial project intended for such a setting. Though that plan was never realized, the space arranged in Japan half a century later to embody the painter’s dream envelops viewers as a “site” where painting and architecture are unified, drawing them into a world beyond words.

The Rothko Room was extremely crowded that day, and I heard entry restrictions were being imposed shortly after my visit.

After Closing?
After the closing, the DIC Kawamura Memorial Museum of Art’s collection of 20th-century art, including its postwar American holdings, has been decided to be transferred to the International House of Japan.
Notably, seven of Mark Rothko’s Seagram Murals — one of the defining works in the collection — will be relocated to the new West Wing of the International House of Japan, designed by the architectural unit SANAA (Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa). A permanent “Rothko Room” jointly operated by DIC and the International House of Japan will be opened there. The new wing is scheduled to open in 2030.

我拜访了将于2025年3月31日闭馆的DIC川村纪念美术馆（DIC Kawamura Memorial Museum of Art）。
抵达会场是2025年3月25日（周二）早上9点。距开馆还有30分钟，停车场已停满车辆，队伍也清晰可见。
工作日竟如此拥挤，令人惊讶。

闭馆之后？
另外，闭馆之后，DIC Kawamura Memorial Museum of Art所藏的以战后美国艺术为首的20世纪艺术藏品，据悉已决定迁至International House of Japan。
尤为值得关注的是，作为该馆象征性藏品之一的Mark Rothko〈Seagram Murals〉七件作品，将被移至由建筑组合SANAA（Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa）设计的International House of Japan新西馆，并将开设由DIC与International House of Japan共同运营的常设展厅”Rothko Room”。新馆预计于2030年开馆。

로스코 룸(Rothko Room)
Rothko Room은 2008년에 증축된 방들 중 하나로, 건축가 Hiroshi Nemoto가 Mark Rothko의 〈Seagram Murals〉 전용 전시실로 설계했습니다. 1950년대 말, 뉴욕의 고급 레스토랑을 장식하기 위해 제작된 〈Seagram Murals〉는 “자신의 작품만으로 한 방을 채우고 싶다”는 Rothko의 바람이 실현되었어야 할 첫 번째 연작이었습니다. 그 계획은 실현되지 못했지만, 반세기 뒤 일본에서 화가의 꿈을 형상화하기 위해 마련된 이 공간은 그림과 건축이 하나로 어우러진 “장(場)”으로서 관람자를 감싸며, 언어를 넘어선 세계로 이끕니다.

폐관 이후는?
한편, 폐관 이후에는 DIC Kawamura Memorial Museum of Art가 소장하고 있는 전후 미국 미술을 비롯한 20세기 미술 컬렉션이 International House of Japan으로 이전되기로 결정되었다고 합니다.
특히 주목할 만한 점은 이 미술관을 상징하는 컬렉션 중 하나이기도 한 Mark Rothko의 〈Seagram Murals〉 7점이 건축 유닛 SANAA(Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa)가 설계하는 International House of Japan 신(新) 서관으로 이설되며, DIC와 International House of Japan이 공동으로 운영하는 상설 전시실 “Rothko Room”이 개설된다는 것입니다. 신관의 개관은 2030년으로 예정되어 있다고 합니다.
