ZONAMACO México Arte Contemporáneo 2024
I visited “ZONAMACO,” Mexico’s largest contemporary art fair.
The venue is on the second floor of Centro Citibanamex
This is ZONAMACO’s 20th edition.
What makes ZONAMACO distinctive is that it incorporates fairs of other genres — furniture, antiques, jewelry — within the fair itself. The contemporary art booths occupy a floor area comparable to Art Fair Tokyo, and compared with large-scale globally expanding art fairs, it did not feel particularly large.
The participating galleries and the works on display had a distinctly Mexican character, making it a very engaging experience.
Also, the visitors seemed to be genuinely enjoying themselves, creating a warm atmosphere and a sense of comfort not found at other fairs.
The gallery below reminded me of gallerists’ worries about “shipping works to Mexico.” Their sculpture crate hadn’t arrived, so they left drawings of the works on the white walls. Shipping issues seemed to be occurring at other galleries as well, but when I spoke with the gallerist, they launched into an undaunted work presentation and put on a positive, aggressive sales pitch. Impressive indeed.
I attended ZONAMACO for two days in total but did not encounter a single Japanese visitor.
Even on a direct flight it’s a 13-14 hour one-way trip, so perhaps that’s to be expected, but with daytime temperatures reaching close to 30°C even in February, warm Mexican people, and delicious food, combining a visit with sightseeing makes for a wonderful experience.

멕시코 최대의 현대미술 아트페어 “ZONAMACO”에 다녀왔습니다.
회장은 Centro Citibanamex의 2층 플로어입니다
ZONAMACO는 이번이 20회째를 맞이하는 페어입니다.
ZONAMACO의 특징은 페어 안에 가구, 골동품, 주얼리 등 다른 장르의 페어를 포함하고 있다는 점입니다. 현대미술 부스는 Art Fair Tokyo와 비슷한 규모로, 세계적으로 전개되는 대형 아트페어와 비교하면 결코 큰 페어라는 느낌은 없었습니다.
출품 갤러리와 출품 작품에서는 멕시코다운 경향이 느껴져 매우 흥미롭게 감상할 수 있었습니다.
또한 관람객들이 매우 즐거워하는 분위기가 따뜻하게 느껴져, 다른 페어에는 없는 편안함이 있었습니다.
“멕시코로의 작품 배송이 걱정된다”는 갤러리스트의 목소리를 떠올리게 한 것이 다음 갤러리입니다. 조각 작품의 크레이트가 도착하지 않았다며 흰 벽에 작품의 드로잉이 남겨져 있었습니다. 배송 문제는 다른 갤러리에서도 발생하고 있는 듯했지만, 갤러리스트에게 이야기를 들어보니 지지 않겠다는 듯 작품 프레젠테이션이 시작되었고 적극적이고 강한 세일즈를 받았습니다. 과연 프로답습니다.
ZONAMACO에는 총 2일간 다녔지만, 일본인 관람객은 한 명도 만나지 못했습니다.
직항편이라도 편도 13~14시간의 비행이므로 어쩔 수 없을지도 모르지만, 2월인데도 낮에는 30도에 가깝게 느껴지는 날씨와 따뜻한 멕시코인들, 맛있는 요리 등을 즐기며 관광을 겸해 방문하면 매우 좋은 경험이 될 것입니다.
