【個展】西川茂「under construction or destruction 2020 Tokyo」Gallery OUT of PLACE TOKIO

今回発表するメイン作品「Sealed House -New National Stadium-」は、
先に記した白紙に戻されたザハ・ハディドによる想像上の新国立競技場のデザインを背景に、新たに建設され今後日本の一つのアイコンになるであろう現実の新国立競技場の建設途上を描いたものである。
それを描こうとしたのは、まさにこの現実と想像上の二つの国立競技場の姿が、
新たに生まれ（亡くなり）記憶に刻まれ（忘却され）る我々の存在そのものの象徴となることに気づいたからである。
二つの国立競技場は、私がこの５、6年続けてきたシリーズの中心のコンセプトに最もふさわしいモチーフであることを、
そして自身の画家としてのアイデンティティに、深く突き刺さるモチーフであることを、今更ながらに確信している。

Sealed House 130-new town-は群像図が形になった作品で、近所の宅地開発現場を描いた作品です。

散歩をして、こうした建設中、解体中のシートで覆われた建物を写真に撮っているが、歩き慣れた土地であっても唐突に現れる更地にドキッとする事がある。
度々通っているのに、そしてこんなに大きな更地であるのに、前に何があったのかが思い出せないのだ。
そして直ぐに新しい住宅地なり、大型店舗なりに姿を変えていく。
そうして、かつてのその場所を忘れた事さえ忘れてしまい、その場所に馴染んでいく。
新しい街の記憶であり、かつての街の忘却。
簡単に更新されてしまう。

The main work presented this time, “Sealed House -New National Stadium-,”
depicts, against a background of the scrapped, imaginary design for the New National Stadium by Zaha Hadid noted above, the actual New National Stadium mid-construction — a real stadium that will surely become one of Japan’s icons going forward.
What led me to depict this was the realization that these two figures of the National Stadium — the real and the imagined —
become a symbol of our very existence: newly born (and dying), etched into memory (and forgotten).
I am now more convinced than ever that these two National Stadiums are the motif most fitting to the central concept of the series I have pursued for the past five or six years,
and are a motif that strikes deep into my identity as a painter.

Sealed House 130 -new town- is a work that took shape as a group scene, depicting a residential development site in my neighborhood.

Walking around, I photograph buildings covered in construction and demolition sheets. Even on paths I know well, I sometimes gasp when a vacant lot suddenly appears.
I have passed by so often, and even though the lot is so large, I can no longer remember what was there before.
And soon it transforms into new housing, or into a large commercial store.
Even the fact that I forgot what once stood in that place is itself forgotten, and I come to feel at home there.
The memory of the new town, and the forgetting of the old.
So easily overwritten.

本次展出的主要作品”Sealed House -New National Stadium-“，
以前文所述的、被搁置的 Zaha Hadid 想象中的新国立竞技场设计为背景，描绘了新建成、今后必将成为日本一个象征的现实新国立竞技场的建设过程。
之所以选择去描绘它，正是因为我意识到，这两座——现实与想象中的国立竞技场，
正是我们作为新生（与逝去）、留存于记忆（与被遗忘）的存在本身的象征。
两座国立竞技场，是我这五六年持续创作的系列作品之核心概念最贴切的母题，
同时也是深深触及我作为画家自身身份认同的母题——我至今才更加确信这一点。

Sealed House 130-new town-是一件以群像图形式呈现的作品，描绘了我家附近的宅地开发现场。

散步时，我常常拍下这些被建设中、拆除中之布覆盖的建筑照片。即便是走惯了的地方，突如其来出现的空地也会让我心头一惊。
明明经常路过、而且是这么大一片空地，却怎么也想不起之前那里有什么。
然后很快就变成新的住宅区或大型店铺。
就这样，连自己忘记了那地方原本模样的事实也一并忘却，融入到那片新的空间中。
新城的记忆，也是旧城的忘却。
如此轻易地被更新。

이번에 발표하는 메인 작품 “Sealed House -New National Stadium-“은,
앞서 언급한 백지화된 Zaha Hadid에 의한 상상 속 신국립경기장의 디자인을 배경으로, 새로 건설되어 앞으로 일본의 한 아이콘이 될 현실의 신국립경기장의 건설 과정을 그린 것이다.
그것을 그리고자 한 것은, 바로 이 현실과 상상 속 두 국립경기장의 모습이,
새롭게 태어나고(사라지고) 기억에 각인되며(잊혀지는) 우리 존재 자체의 상징이 됨을 깨달았기 때문이다.
두 국립경기장이야말로 내가 지난 5, 6년간 지속해 온 시리즈의 중심 컨셉에 가장 부합하는 모티브이며,
그리고 화가로서의 나 자신의 정체성에 깊이 꽂히는 모티브임을, 이제 새삼 확신하고 있다.

Sealed House 130-new town-은 군상도의 형태로 결실을 맺은 작품으로, 근처의 택지 개발 현장을 그린 작품입니다.

산책을 하며, 이러한 건설 중, 해체 중의 시트로 덮인 건물들을 사진에 담고 있지만, 익숙한 길이라 해도 갑작스레 나타나는 빈 땅에 흠칫할 때가 있다.
자주 지나다녔음에도, 그리고 이렇게 큰 빈 땅임에도, 이전에 무엇이 있었는지 기억나지 않는 것이다.
그리고 곧 새로운 주택지든, 대형 점포든의 모습으로 바뀌어 간다.
그렇게 예전 그곳을 잊어버렸다는 사실조차 잊어버리고, 그 장소에 익숙해져 간다.
새로운 거리의 기억이며, 예전 거리의 망각.
너무나 쉽게 갱신되어 버린다.
