We visited Yuichi Hirako’s solo exhibition “Memories” at WAITINGROOM, a gallery in Edogawabashi.
Yuichi Hirako’s practice centers on painting, but extends across media — drawing, sculpture, installation, sound performance — as he explores the coexistence of plants and humans and the questions that arise about the relationships between them.

Upon entering the gallery, a large wooden tower (yagura) assembled at the center immediately catches the eye.
A handcrafted installation, built together with the gallery staff, that symbolizes the accumulation of memory.
For this new solo exhibition, Yuichi Hirako chose “memory” as his theme, drawing on approximately 13,000 photographs he had taken with his smartphone over the past three years to create the new ≪Perennial≫ series.
“Perennial,” the title of the series, refers to “perennial plants” while also carrying the meanings of “long-lasting” and “enduring.” Rather than depicting fleeting memory, the works express a world that persists over time — a way for the artist to reflect, while working, on the more universal relationship between humans and plants.

To coincide with the exhibition, “mm’s” — which produces artist-collaboration T-shirts using high-quality materials — offered a limited-edition T-shirt for sale.

An “audio guide” — now standard at museums — is also available for this exhibition. The audio guide is led by Yuichi Hirako himself, with gallery director Ashikawa acting as interviewer as the two carry the conversation forward.
The audio guide is clearly structured and lets visitors feel Hirako’s worldview open up even further. It should help viewers enjoy a richer experience of the show.
It is worth noting that both the limited-edition “mm’s” T-shirt and the audio-guide project were proposals originally brought forward by collectors who support Yuichi Hirako.
These initiatives — flavoring a gallery exhibition through the perspective of highly engaged collectors — are efforts that open up what is sometimes seen as an insular art market, and we will continue to watch such moves closely.
Alongside his internationally expanding practice, Yuichi Hirako mounted a solo exhibition of distinctive character and diverse range. Unveiling a new series while maintaining his momentum as an artist, this was a show that further widened the horizons of his possibilities.

갤러리에 들어서면 중앙에 세워진 커다란 목조 망루(야구라)가 시선을 사로잡습니다.
갤러리 스태프까지 함께 제작한 손수 만든 인스톨레이션 작품으로, 기억의 축적을 상징합니다.
이번 신작 개인전의 주제로 “기억”을 선택한 Yuichi Hirako는 지난 3년간 스마트폰으로 촬영한 약 13,000장의 사진을 참고하여, 새로운 ≪Perennial≫ 시리즈를 제작했습니다.
제목이 된 “Perennial”은 “다년생 식물”을 의미하는 명칭이면서, 동시에 “오래 지속되는”, “영속하는”이라는 뜻도 지니고 있습니다. 일시적인 기억이 아니라 오래도록 이어지는 세계를 표현함으로써, 인간과 식물 사이의 보다 보편적인 관계성을 생각하며 제작했다고 합니다.

또한, 미술관에서는 이미 당연시되고 있는 “오디오 가이드”가 본 전시에서도 체험 가능하게 되어 있습니다. 오디오 가이드 콘텐츠는 Yuichi Hirako 본인의 해설을 중심으로, 갤러리 디렉터 Ashikawa 씨가 청자 역할을 맡아 두 사람이 진행합니다.
오디오 가이드는 매우 이해하기 쉽게 구성되어 있어, Hirako의 세계관이 더욱 폭넓게 다가올 것입니다. 이 가이드를 통해 관람자는 한층 풍성한 감상 체험으로 이어질 것이라 생각합니다.
또한 한정 티셔츠 “mm’s”도, 오디오 가이드 기획도, Yuichi Hirako를 지지하는 컬렉터로부터 제안된 기획이라는 점을 기록해 두고 싶습니다.
의식이 높은 컬렉터의 시각에서 갤러리 전람회에 색을 더하는 이러한 시도는, 때로 폐쇄적으로 여겨지는 아트 마켓을 개방해 나가는 노력으로서 앞으로도 주목하고 싶습니다.
세계적으로 전개되는 작가 활동과 함께 개성적이고 다양성 있는 개인전을 개최한 Yuichi Hirako. 새로운 시리즈 작품을 발표하면서 아티스트로서의 기세를 유지하고, 그 가능성이 한층 더 확장되어 가는 개인전이었습니다.
