I visited “2003-2004,” a solo exhibition gathering previously unshown works produced by artist Shigeru Hasegawa between 2003 and 2004. The venue is Satoko Oe Contemporary, a gallery in Kiyosumi-Shirakawa.

From the spring of 2003 to the spring of 2004, Shigeru Hasegawa returned to the Netherlands — where he had been based during the 1990s — and made work there.
The pieces from this period, which mix works produced in the Netherlands with works produced in Japan, show elements that recall Dutch painting and interior scenes, and are marked by a generous, unhurried brushstroke.

Only five works were on view, but because the number of surviving pieces from this period is limited, the exhibition is a valuable chance to see rare paintings.
Since these are works the artist himself had kept carefully, the prices were set a little more assertively than usual — yet given Shigeru Hasegawa’s career, they still felt affordable. I highly recommend visiting the exhibition while you have the opportunity.

출품작은 단 5점뿐이었지만, 이 시기의 작품 수 자체가 한정적이라는 점을 감안하면 귀중한 작품들을 감상할 수 있는 소중한 개인전이라 할 수 있습니다.
또한 작가 본인이 소중히 보관해 온 작품들인 만큼, 종전보다 다소 강하게 책정된 가격이었지만, Shigeru Hasegawa의 커리어를 고려하면 여전히 충분히 합리적인 수준이었습니다. 이 기회에 꼭 발걸음을 옮겨 직접 감상해 보시길 권합니다.
