We visited Natsuko Tanihara’s first solo exhibition in Tokyo, “The Unyielding Ones.” The venue was gallery MEM in Ebisu.

Regarding the exhibition title “The Unyielding Ones (Matsurowanumono),” Tanihara explains that the term refers to “the peoples who fiercely resisted around the time the Yamato court was being established — meaning those who did not submit or yield.” She says that what she paints are the stories of these unyielding ones.

The work “The Unyielding Ones” is a large-scale piece measuring 180cm x 200cm.
Tanihara’s works are painted with oil and acrylic paints on black velvet cloth, and even at large scale, the sheer volume of detail packed into them is overwhelming.

No matter how beautiful the paint applied to it, black velvet carries an air of mystery and unease, and seems to radiate a distinctive kind of strength.

“Twilight,” which depicts the twilight hour, is a work inspired by events that unfold at the time of day when the setting sun makes it hard to make out people’s faces.
At dusk, when features become indistinct, three women each assert their own presence while seemingly questioning the viewer about the relationships between them.

“Atonement” is a work produced in Paris, France.
Whether she is playing cat’s cradle or knitting, a red thread, a white veil, and the black velvet ground intertwine with lavish flowers and patterns.

“As Far As You Can Go” depicts a “magma” that looks like a sea of blood gradually closing in, set against the backdrop of the French cliffs often taken up as motifs in classic paintings. Tanihara actually visits these sites and incorporates them into her paintings.
Her work is generated through a combination of on-the-ground research and imagination.

“I Can See Nothing” is a work inspired by the “Tsuyama Massacre,” a real-life mass murder case.

This is the first Tokyo solo exhibition for Tanihara, who hails from the Kansai region.
The prices for the works come across as notably restrained. It seems this reflects an intention to expand her collector base in the Kanto area.
The expressions of the works, played out by black velvet cloth and paint, run endlessly deep, drawing us as viewers into their world of darkness and color.

전시 제목 “The Unyielding Ones(마쓰로와누모노)”에 대해 Tanihara는 “‘복종하지 않는 자들’이란, 야마토 조정이 성립되려 하던 무렵 격렬하게 저항을 이어간 민족을 뜻한다. 따르지 않는 자, 순응하지 않는 자라는 의미다”라고 설명하며, 자신이 그리고 있는 것은 이 복종하지 않는 자들의 이야기라고 말합니다.

황혼녘을 표현한 《Twilight》은 저녁놀로 사람의 얼굴이 잘 보이지 않는 시간대에 일어난 사건을 이미지화한 작품.
얼굴을 알아보기 어려운 저물녘, 세 여성이 저마다의 존재감을 뚜렷이 드러내면서 관객에게 그 관계성을 묻는 듯한 작품입니다.

실뜨기를 하고 있는지 뜨개질을 하고 있는지, 붉은 실과 흰 베일, 벨벳의 검은 바탕이 화려한 꽃과 문양과 얽혀 갑니다.

《As Far As You Can Go》은 명화의 모티브로 자주 등장하는 프랑스의 절벽을 배경으로, 피바다처럼 보이는 “마그마”가 서서히 다가오는 모습을 그린 작품입니다. Tanihara는 실제로 현지에 가서 그림의 모티브로 삼는 듯합니다.
작품은 취재력과 상상력에 의해 태어납니다.
