A hushed interior bathed in the soft light of northern Europe — an open door, restrained and refined furniture and fittings, a woman with her back turned.
What is depicted here is the living room or bedroom of the painter’s own home, but every trace of daily life has been carefully erased. In this serene world where sound and light are sealed in, time itself seems to have stopped. The works of the Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershoi (1864–1916) — sometimes called “the Vermeer of the North” for their echoes of 17th-century Dutch genre painting — carry an air recalling the classics of Western art, while also evoking a certain nostalgia peculiar to the modern urban dweller.
Hammershoi was active during the roughly fifteen years around 1900, when Western art was unfolding in dazzling fashion. Post-Impressionism followed Impressionism, and new artistic movements — Symbolism, Cubism, Expressionism — emerged one after another. Removed from the “clamor” of that mainstream, Hammershoi pursued a painting of his own, quietly and continually depicting old apartments, old streets, old furniture — places and motifs where time had settled in layers. Amid the glittering fin-de-siècle art, Hammershoi’s reticent works stand out with a singular presence. After his death, he was for a time regarded as an out-of-date painter and forgotten. His beautifully harmonious color, delicate depiction of light, and minimal compositions reveal the artist’s modest disposition and a refined, modern sensibility.
Major museums in Europe and America have been adding his works to their collections one after another, and Hammershoi’s international reputation has continued to rise in recent years. In Japan, his first exhibition was held in 2008, and although he was almost entirely unknown here at the time, he captivated many art fans.
More than a decade after that quiet shock, Hammershoi’s gem-like works return to Japan, this time alongside the first full-scale introduction of 19th-century Danish masterpieces to be shown here.

Exhibition Highlights
The exhibition has three main highlights.
1) Approximately 40 Hammershoi works assembled
More than a decade on from the 2008 exhibition, long-awaited Hammershoi works are once again gathered in Japan.
Including pieces shown in Japan for the first time, the exhibition introduces the appeal of the artist known as “the Vermeer of the North.”
By situating his works within the flow of 19th-century Danish art, the exhibition sheds new light on Hammershoi’s singular talent.
2) Japan’s first full-scale exhibition of Danish painting
From the simple, pure paintings of the “Golden Age of Danish Painting,” which flourished in Copenhagen — the center of Nordic art — in the first half of the 19th century, to the beautiful works of the Skagen Painters incorporating Impressionist depictions of light, and the interior scenes that characterize the painters active in the capital at the end of the century, this exhibition offers Japan’s first full-scale introduction to the enchanting world of Danish painting.
3) Encounter with the Danish culture of “hygge”
The images of northern Europe’s beautiful nature and the people who live there, of families relaxing in their private spaces — the “small happinesses hidden in everyday moments” that these late-19th-century Danish painters depicted — pulse with the value that the Danes hold dear: “hygge” (a relaxed, cozy atmosphere).

북유럽의 부드러운 빛이 스며드는 고요한 실내 – 활짝 열린 문, 절제되고 고급스러운 가구 조도품, 뒤돌아선 여성 -.
그려져 있는 것은 화가의 자택 거실이나 침실이지만, 생활의 흔적은 신중하게 지워져 있으며, 소리와 빛이 갇혀 있는 정밀한 세계에서는 시간의 흐름도 멈춰 있는 것처럼 느껴집니다. 17세기 네덜란드 풍속화의 영향이 인정되기 때문에 “북유럽의 Vermeer”라고도 불리는 덴마크 화가 Vilhelm Hammershoi(1864-1916)의 작품은 서양 미술의 고전을 상기시키는 분위기를 두르면서도 근대의 도시 생활자 특유의 어떤 종류의 향수를 느끼게 합니다.
Hammershoi가 활동한 것은 서양 미술이 화려하게 전개된 1900년 전후의 십수 년간이었습니다. 인상파에 이어 후기 인상파가 등장하고, 상징주의, 큐비즘, 표현주의 등 새로운 예술이 잇달아 태어났습니다. 그러한 메인스트림의 “소란”에서 벗어나 Hammershoi는 독자적인 회화를 추구하며, 오래된 아파트나 오래된 거리, 오래된 가구 등, 시간이 켜켜이 쌓인 장소나 모티브를 조용히 계속 그려나갔습니다. 화려한 세기말 미술 속에서 과묵한 Hammershoi의 작품은 유달리 이채를 발합니다. 사후, 한때는 시대에 뒤떨어진 화가로 여겨져 잊혀졌던 Hammershoi. 그 아름답게 조화된 색채와 섬세한 빛의 묘사, 미니멀한 구성은 화가의 겸손함과 세련된 모던한 감성을 보여줍니다.
구미의 주요 미술관들이 잇따라 작품을 컬렉션에 추가하는 등, 근년 Hammershoi에 대한 평가는 세계적으로 계속 높아지고 있습니다. 일본에서도 2008년에 첫 전시회가 개최되었고, 그 이전까지 거의 무명 화가였음에도 많은 미술 팬들을 매료시켰습니다.
조용한 충격으로부터 10여 년. 일본에서 처음으로 본격 소개되는 19세기 덴마크 명화와 함께, Hammershoi의 주옥같은 작품들이 다시 일본에 옵니다.

본 전시의 볼거리는 다음의 3가지입니다.
1) Hammershoi 작품 약 40점이 집결
2008년 전시회로부터 10여 년 – 미술 팬 대망의 Hammershoi 작품이 다시 일본에 집결.
일본 초공개 작품을 포함해 “북유럽의 Vermeer”라고도 불리는 그 매력을 소개합니다.
19세기 덴마크 미술의 흐름 속에서 작품을 파악함으로써 Hammershoi라는 특이한 재능의 새로운 면모를 볼 수 있을 것입니다.
2) 일본 최초의 본격적 덴마크 회화전
유럽 미술의 중심지 코펜하겐에서 19세기 전반에 꽃피운, “덴마크 회화의 황금기”라 불리는 시대의 소박하고 순수한 회화부터, 인상파적 빛의 묘사를 도입한 Skagen Painters의 아름다운 작품, 세기말 수도에서 활약한 화가들을 특징짓는 실내화까지, 매력 넘치는 덴마크 회화를 일본에서 처음으로 본격 소개합니다.
3) 덴마크 문화 “hygge”를 만나다
19세기 말 덴마크 화가들이 그려낸 북유럽의 아름다운 자연과 그곳에서 살아가는 사람들, 프라이빗한 공간에서 편안하게 지내는 가족 등 “무심한 일상에 숨겨진 작은 행복”의 이미지에는 덴마크인들이 소중히 여기는 가치관 “hygge (편안하고 아늑한 분위기)”가 살아 숨쉬고 있습니다.
